Trustees’ Annual Report
Trustees’ Annual Report for the period
From 06 April 2023 To 05 April 2024
Charity name: Wonder Wards
Charity registration number: 1204696
Objectives and Activities
-
The purpose of wonder wards is for the public benefit, to relieve sickness or ill-health among children and young people particularly, those who have life limited conditions by assisting in the provision of items, services and facilities to ease the suffering or to provide comforts for those people.
-
Our activities are all fundraising based; and/or raising awareness to our purpose.
-
Over our initial year/6 months from registration, Wonder Wards have gained several partnerships, including GripActive clothing and Leafy Productions. Both of which enhance the Charity’s reach online. We have also established a partnership with FreeWills to enable our supporters to write a Will free of charge, with no obligation to the Charity itself.
-
Along with multiple fundraising events, Wonder Wards has organised a Charity Gala to help raise funds for our purpose.
-
Since Wonder Wards began, we have been raising funds via online and in person events. In December 2023, we were able to help our first beneficiary; a young boy, with a congenital heart condition, and his struggling family (see achievements below).
-
Wonder Wards are currently raising funds to provide a grant to the Royal Preston Hospital’s children’s ward to install LED ceiling panel in its treatment room, to help ease and distract their young patients during treatments.
-
All of the Wonder Wards Trustees have read, understood, and regard these outputs to be in line with the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit.

Achievements and Performance
- Alfe - Wonder Wards were contacted by a mother of an 11 year old boy with a serious congenital heart condition. Alfie had had four open heart surgeries, resulting in the need to spend the majority of his time in hospital. This meant his parents also had to spend a lot of their time with him in hospital and not working. Resulting in them having difficulties financially. With Christmas fast approaching. Wonder Wards helped this family by granting a small wish of Alfie’s; and providing him with a gaming laptop and games, that he can take with him when spending long periods of time in hospital. The smile on his face when he opened the gift, at Christmas, was the exact measure of why we're trying to do what we do. His family also felt the ease of pressure not having to go into potential debt by providing their son with the laptop themselves.
Additional Information
-
Achievements vs Objectives Set - One of our objectives as a new micro Charity was to help at least one beneficiary in our first year. We are delighted to have achieved this by helping Alfie and his family.
-
Performance of fundraising activities against objectives set – Our fundraising objective in the first year was £5000. We have managed to raise £3,088.39 in our first 7 months since official registration.
Financial Review
- On review, the Charity’s financial position is in credit and stable.

Trustee’s Annual Report 2023/2024
-
Reserves Policy Statement - Wonder Wards holds a designated unrestricted reserve fund for any unforeseen emergencies. This is separated from the unrestricted general funds and is to be used as a backup to the general funds in the case of any unplanned/unforeseen expenses.
-
Reserve Fund - £1000 (It is not deemed necessary to hold more than this amount at this time of the Charity’s life)
-
Long Term Loan - The Charity has a long term zero interest loan, which was used to get the charity started, pay for tangible assets, such as our Charity van, gazebo and brand merchandise (such as wristbands and badges); and it has paid a minimal living wage to the Charity’s founder, for work conducted other than that of a trustee role. However, it was understood that this would be for one year only to get the charity up and running. The Trustees (not including the founder) have decided that although a performance review shows the founder has done a satisfactory job, the funds are not there to continue paying a wage at this time. To this end, unless funds can be obtained (without affecting the charities purpose), the work of the founder will continue voluntarily as of June 2024.
Structure, Governance and Management
-
The Wonder Wards governing document is based on a CIO foundation structure whose only voting members are its charity trustees.
-
Wonder Wards is a Charity Incorporated Organisation.
-
Trustee selection - When/if a Trustee is required (at the end of an existing Trustee tenure), or somebody wishes to become a Trustee, they will be appointed via a Board of Trustee vote. Their credentials will be discussed at a board meeting and a decision made. There must be a majority yes vote.
-
Trustees sit on the board for a four year term and can extend for no more than a further two four year periods.
-
Initial tenures have been staggered to ensure there are always Trustees in seats.
