MORABE Rural Music Trustees' Report
Core Activities
MORABE Rural Music offers music education and community outreach across rural Suffolk through two primary programs: the Schools Pathway and the Community Pathway .
The Schools Pathway includes music education during and after school, such as music literacy classes, choir, a string access scheme for KS1, individual lessons, and performance opportunities. Specialised programs are offered for SEN pupils, including after-school ensembles, theory clubs, and West African drumming. By providing free instruments and offering bursaries and scholarships, MORABE ensures that all children, regardless of background, have access to music education.
The Community Pathway fosters connection through initiatives such as Mini Music (for children aged 0-4 and their parents/carers), the Community Choir , and additional performance opportunities. This pathway encourages parental involvement and promotes social cohesion through music.
Outcomes
MORABE Rural Music has made significant progress in democratising music education, nurturing talent and enhancing community cohesion.
The organisation is recognised as a regional leader in music education, with its programme extending beyond the founding school and community in Eyke to reach pupils from Aldeburgh, Snape, Melton, and Woodbridge. MORABE has also provided consultative expertise to ASSET Education and presented at major forums such as the Westminster Forum and Music Mark, solidifying its status as a thought leader in the sector.
The charity's influence is further demonstrated by media coverage from outlets like BBC Politics East and Look East, as well as visits from school leaders from Melton, Orford, Framlingham, and Easton to observe its music programs.
Support from key partners & stakeholder, including Suffolk Music Therapy, Wooden Roots, Britten Pears Arts, and East Suffolk District Council, have expanded its reach. MORABE has also been invited to become a lead partner organisation for the Norfolk Suffolk Music Hub, amplifying our impact.
The impact on beneficiaries is clear, with students and community members performing throughout the year in the community and at the world-renowned Snape Maltings. Pupils have also taken independent instrumental exams through ABRSM, with 12 achieving 9 distinctions and 3 merits in the last year. Additionally, students have contributed to broader musical events, such as the Wooden Roots Experience Weekend, the national Benedetti Sessions, and the

Suffolk County Council String Ensemble, which is currently led by a 10-year-old MORABE pupil.
Feedback from parents and schools highlights the transformative effects of the program. One parent shared, “ The benefits… are immeasurabl e,” while another said, “ My son has developed greater resilience and confidence. ” Headteachers have also praised the program, with one commenting, " It has transformed the learning environment and allowed students to achieve beyond expectations." The head of Suffolk Music Hub noted: "The programme that Morabe has built is, put simply, inspirational and places music at the centre of a programme not solely of youth engagement but focused on community cohesion."
MORABE’s success is reflected in its ability to foster resilience, improve academic performance, and create long-lasting community connections.
Plans for the Future
MORABE Rural Music is dedicated to expanding its impact and building on its current success to ensure long-term sustainability. Moving forward, we will focus on broadening our reach, securing a position as a beacon of best practice, enhancing program depth, and securing the resources necessary for ongoing success.
Key goals for the future include expanding access to music education for rural state pupils and increasing the number of children and communities we serve. Financially, we will focus on strengthening sustainability by building reserves and diversifying funding sources.
We aim to develop a robust evaluation framework to measure and communicate the impact of our programs, using these insights to improve services and attract further funding. Strengthening partnerships, sharing best practices, and expanding reach will also remain priorities.
MORABE will continue to engage the community in shaping its programmes through feedback and active involvement.
As a young charity, we have made significant strides in advancing our mission to provide music education and community engagement opportunities. The support of generous donors, partners, and our dedicated volunteers, staff, and trustees has been crucial to our continued success.
We remain committed to making music accessible to all, fostering local talent, and creating meaningful community connections. In the coming year, we are focused on ensuring the sustainability and growth of our program, which includes strengthening and diversifying funding sources, and building on the successes of our initiatives.

MORABE Rural Music Trustees' Report
Financial Review
The charity’s total income for the year was £182,254, of which £169,223 came from restricted donations, including £119,440 in designated funds. Notably, this includes a generous three-year pledge of £105,000 (£35,000 per annum) towards the Morabe Bursary Fund from an anonymous donor, for which we are extremely grateful.
Total expenditure for the year was £43,521, with £22,321 allocated to freelance staff and teachers.
The Trustees extend their heartfelt thanks to Maria Dobing, Morabe’s Founding Programme Director, who has worked largely on a pro bono basis to establish the charity in its first year, apart from the amount reflected in Note 4.
The charity ended its first year with a net surplus of £138,633, which includes the £105,000 restricted funding pledge for the Morabe Bursary Fund. The unrestricted funds surplus at year-end was £31,194.
Looking ahead, the charity will prioritise two key unrestricted core funding initiatives:
The Morabe 50 – a commitment from 50 donors to contribute £1,000 per year for three years.
The Patrons Programme – a dedicated initiative to support long-term sustainability.
We are deeply grateful to our supporters for their ongoing commitment and belief in our vision. Together, we will continue to make a lasting difference in the lives of our beneficiaries, and we are excited about the progress we will make in the year ahead.
