CONSORTIUM FOR ThE PREVENTION OF SUICIDE
CHAIR'S STATEMENT
FOR THE PERIOD ENDED 31 AUGUST 2024
The Chair prè8ents his Statement for the FerKMJ.
The Consortium became a fegistered charty on the 29th August 2023, having ￿nVerted frorn its previous guisa
as a Community Interest Company. This also brought a set ol Trustees. and this yeaf has been. amongst
othar things. a time for building the collecb've strength of a team dedicated lo tackling the rise in 8uicK88 aGro$s
our society.
The Secunty sector is paTts'cularty vulnerable to suicide amongst its empksyees - employing as il dces many
people on low wages wothing unscoable hours. often on their cr+4n. and facing roguLar incidents of anb"$ocial
behaviour just because of their role. A recent $uNey by Portsmoulh Unrversity of members of the Socurity Séctor
found some 40% of respondents displaywj some signs of undiagnosed PTSD, perhaps not surprisin9 ￿ an
industy employing laToe numbers of fornei seryice ané police Fersonnel.
The Consortium was Started to challenge the industy to do More to protect rts 8taff. To encouraga gfeater
investment in this aspect of people management, to share best practice. and lo allow Companies and individuals
lo learn trom each other. The number of companies that have 8Sready pl￿9•d their 8UPPOrt is hoartgning.
As wo11 as a year of developing the Trustees as a team, we have focused on securing thg financial frameworf( lo
allow us to Invest In the progTammes and activrt16s to wogress our objectives. Work continues lo move us in the
next financial yèar lo a subscription model, liered to allcjw both large and small organi38tions lo join and be 8 part
ol the Consortium. In the meantime. I'm delighted to ￿pOrt that we secured a 9ranl from the Fishmongefs,
Comp8ny'5 Charitable Trust lo 'pump pnme. the Consortium with funding for basic administration, mart%eling and
lo alk)w for holding awareness events dunng the next three years, subject to the Consortiums performance each
year. I'm extremely gratefijl to the Fishmongers for Ihelr generosity and for iheir faith In the ConBortiurn.
One ol the fifst activilles ol the Consortium was lo commission a short film-'Courage' that is now on You Tube
and h85 been shcwn at a nymber of evonis within the industy. Whilst commi$sioned just before this financial
year, the first tonral showing was al the B8nk of England for Wodd SuicKie Prevention Day on 13th Sèptember
2023. It is a hu9ely Impacbve film, showing the pressure on workers In the Industry, and has been very well
re￿Ived. l am absolutely delighted to report that ¢1 was shortlisled for the National Charity Award8 held garlièr
this year and won the People's Ch￿ce award- a real testament to the wer of the product and the message.
As wlh all new ehari118s wé have spent tr.me craattng and reviewing a portlolio of policios rèlwant lo our work.
Thi8 work is almost complgle. arKI l am grateful to Trustee Adam Day and Treasurer Andrew Knights for a
conslderable amount of work lo gel the most imr￿ant ones COMp￿ted and syned off by ITUStees.
Truste8$ have also been busy ensuring the profiig of tho thonty. as V&e become more self-SUStaining, 18 being
raised within the Securty SerAoT. We have a seat at the National Police Suicide Prevention Group which I, as
Chair, attend. and have been part of Corporation of London roundtabjas and seminars on the subject. As woll as
the evenl al (he Bank of England in Septembor referenced eadier, the Consortium has presented as the
nominated Charity at the Tad(ling Economic Cr¢me Avrdrds ITECAS) and the Outstanding Security Professionals
Awards IOSPAS). It presented al the Nat￿nal Emergency Services Shw al the NEC In May 2024. as well a$
smaller events held within the seGtor. It is evKlent now that the Consortium is known within the industy. We were
delighted when 125 Obj Broad Street a managed office space company sdected us as their charity partner for
2024.
