Report for Suskes AGM

Transport

This year has focused on the trial of a peer-to-peer car club. Following a feasibility study funded by the Rural Community Energy Fund (RCEF) completed in December 2022, which concluded there was sufficient interest from the local residential population in Keswick to make a car club viable, we launched a peer to peer car sharing scheme in Keswick. Funding from Allerdale Borough supported the launch of the scheme which included setting up a website (https://www.hiyacar.co.uk/north-lakes-car-share) and making a short film (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6dBgdd6FDyY&t=6s) to help promote the scheme. We opted to use a commercial platform called ‘Hiyacar’ and we currently have three people in Keswick sharing their vehicles on the platform. Unfortunately the usage of the scheme has been very low. This could be for a number of reasons, but primarily we believe it is due to the cost of the hire, especially when compared to the much-reduced price of public transport during the same time period. We are now exploring other options through a partnership with Charge My Street and JLJ Community Initiatives who are working on a Rural Energy Resilience Project. It is possible through this project that we may have use of a community electric car club vehicle for a trial period. Watch this space for more information coming soon! Whilst we have been focused on our car sharing initiative, we have also provided feedback to Cumberland Council on their Bus Service Improvement Plan where we advocated for improvements to frequency and reliability, as well as real time displays, better bus shelters and bike-friendly services. We hope to continue this dialogue with Cumberland Council in 2024.

Nature, Food and farming

We’ve been continuing our work on a variety of nature projects across Keswick including Elizabeth’s wood near the BMX track, the meadow at Borrowdale Road roundabout and the tree planting at Springs Road Flood Storage Basin. These were all project which started in 2022 but are likely to continue for many years to come. This year has focused on more tree planting at Elizabeth’s wood, along with the installation of a path and benches which means this area is now fully accessible by members of the public. We also carried out a bioblitz as part of Great Big Green Week where we recorded a total of 57 species. A management plan has been drawn up for the site by the Woodland trust and we will carry out the actions in the plan in collaboration with Keswick Town Council’s Parks Trust. The meadow at Borrowdale Road roundabout is looking fantastic this summer and has benefitted from additional planting using plug plants grown by Sustainable Keswick volunteers. We will continue a regime of cut and remove to further reduce the fertility of this site and promote the growth of wild flowers. The trees at Springs Road Flood Storage Basin have really taken off and are growing extremely well. The fruit trees are struggling with deer damage so we are considering how to manage this going forwards. The hedge laying project carried out over the winter was a success and we will be applying to the Lake District Foundation ‘Real Hedge Fund’ for funding to do more hedge management in the next few years. Sustainable Keswick volunteers have also supported the Woodland Trust, National Trust and West Cumbria Rivers Trust variously to deliver a hedge laying project at Greta Bank Farm,10 tree cages at Strand Shag Bay and Himalayan balsam bashing in Ings Wood. As well as practical events, we’ve been highligting the plight of species world-wide by arranging a performance of a theatrical piece called ‘Vigil’ at the Keswick Alhambra. Tom Bailey who starred in the production is now

touring on foot and ferry across Scotland, Norway and Denmark and we hope to welcome him back to Keswick next year.

Aswell as our nature focus, we’ve been helping Suskes member to explore the world of sustainable food and farming this year. This included a sell-out viewing of the film ‘Six Inches of Soil’ in March at the Keswick Alhambra, including an insightful panel session with some local producers. We also teamed up with local farms during Great Big Green Week, supporting farm visits at Low Netherscales Farm in Embleton as part of Open Farm Sunday and a school visit for St Herberts Eco-warriors to Torpenhow Organic Dairy Farm. Members of Sustainable Keswick have also attended Sharon Watson’s Seasonal, Local, Organic, Waste-free (SLOW) food events at her home in Cockermouth. The food and farming agenda is likely to remain an area of focus for Sustainable Keswick going forwards, especially as we now have the support of our local composting expert – Debbie Adkins of Garden Organic and Cumbria Master Composters.

We’ve also been expanding our horizon to include water quality and have forged links with West Cumbria Rivers Trust to help promote a number of their events, most recently their event at the Alhambra cinema celebrating the successful application for Bathing Water status for Crow Park in Derwentwater. Water quality is likely to be an increasing area of focus for Sustainable Keswick and we’ll look to team up with local groups like ‘Friends of Derwentwater’ to increase our capacity to support this important work.
