Current volunteers have expertise across a wide range of relevant areas. These include: charity & volunteer management; health & safety; first aid & medical assistance; fundraising; woodworking; workshop management; machinery operations; accounting; charity finances & reporting; charity trusteeship. All activities will continue to be provided by, or will be supervised by, volunteers.

working group, setting up the initial shed

and, especially, seeking premises to house
the shed activities. The working group now
numbers approximately ten members.
Numerous potential locations were viewed,
and several were offered to us. However
nothing suitable and affordable crystalised.
Since the financial year end, though, an
exciting and significant local authority-
owned building prospect has arisen.
Progress and negotiations are complicated
by major factors beyond our control. We
have secured a substantial grant, ready for
hopefully when we are in a position to
proceed with the initial stage of our plans
In advance of securing premises, shed
members have make planters and nesting
boxes in their garages. These are sold to
raise shed funds, or are donated for local
community benefit. A currently project is
nesting boxes for a local wildlife scheme.
Meanwhile, we continue to host meetings
and “clean” events in the local church hall.
We successfully hosted interactive events
with guest presenters for wood spoon
carving and for police equipment history.
Since the year end, we hosted further
events included the history of the English
longbow, and a session to test senior
people for atrial fibrillation in conjunction
with the local medical group.|

of benefit to the wider community, some
generating donations in recognition.
We have also had increasing engagement
with other local men’s sheds, including use
of facilities for woodworking projects.|

premises is proving more frustrating than
expected, we know this is often the typical
experience of sheds being established.
However, we are building a local shed and
supporter community, and our activities are
gradually attracting wider local interest.
We believe we should be well placed to
move forward quickly, to more fully achieve
our objectives, once we secure premises.|

## **Financial Review**

Review of the charity’s Para 1.21 See attached financial information for the
financial position at the end year ended 5 April 2025
of the period
Over the period, which very much reflected
activities limited by the ongoing search for
premises, the shed generated modest
income of £185. Expenses were £599,
resulting in a net cash outflow of £414.
This was covered easily from funds
brought forward, and a cash balance of
£2,972 remained at the financial year end.
The Trustees remain extremely grateful to
those generous individuals and
organisations who kindly donated
equipment, materials, time and services.
Statement explaining the Para 1.22 During the establishment period, the
policy for holding reserves Trustees are ensuring that sufficient cash
stating why they are held funds are held to cover in full all committed
and anticipated unavoidable expenditure.
The Shed currently does not have any
employees, nor any rental or other
contractual commitments. So at present,
no significant reserves are required.

Until such premises are secured, it remains

build, and retain ongoing interest in, a local
shedders community; and to secure and
maintain funders’ and donors’ interest.
The Trustees recognise the severe
financial constraints currently impacting the
local authority, and other public and
charitable grant-awarding bodies. In
particular, as a start-up small charity it is
very difficult to secure grant funding,
especially for anything beyond physical
assets. There is the risk that, until it
secures premises, the shed may struggle
to generate sufficient income to develop,
and as quickly, as the Trustees would wish.|

Policies and procedures Para 1.51 All Trustees have undergone formal
adopted for the induction training in being a Charity Trustee. Two

charity and voluntary organisation
management, including acting as trustees.
As part of their induction, future Trustees
will be required to either demonstrate
previous experience as a charity Trustee,
or to complete a course of formal training in
being a charity trustee. They will be taken
through all the Shed’s documented Policies
and Procedures, which will be explained
and where necessary demonstrated.

documented.
The charity’s organisational Para 1.51 The Shed is currently managed by a
structure and any wider working group of Trustees and volunteers,
network with which the supported by external advisers. It
charity works networks with other Men’s Sheds,
especially in West and North-Yorkshire.
It is a member of the UK Men’s Sheds
Association (reg. charity 1162409), which
provides support and guidance to groups
across the UK in starting and managing
now over 1,300 Men’s sheds in the UK.
