A good example of the latter is a volunteer who helped make, and teach a Trustee how to build, workbenches for the Shed. Another volunteer is a qualified accountant with extensive experience in small charity finances, reporting, fundraising, legal affairs and management, who has himself previously been a Charity Director/Trustee. As the Shed develops its programme of activities, all the activities will be provided by or will be supervised by volunteers.

as a working group setting up the initial
Shed organisation, policies and systems,
and most importantly in seeking premises
for the Shed activity to take place.
It became clear in early 2024 that the initial
assumption - to locate the Shed operation
in, or adjacent to, the Wilsden Village Hall -
would not be acceptable to other hall users
and nearby residents. The working group
since then has directed most of its efforts to
seeking a suitable and affordable location,
and to building a local shed community.
Numerous potential locations have been
investigated, and several possibilities have
been offered to the Shed for consideration.
So far nothing suitable or affordable has
crystalised, but various possibilities and
alternatives remain under investigation.
In the meantime, the local CofE church
agreed the Shed can use its Church Hall
for meetings and for “clean” events. The
Shed working group is working to develop
a group of aspiring shedders, and to
develop a programme of activities at the
Church Hall or by arranging trips and visits.
This is planned to include talks and
demonstrations; table-based crafts and
activities making limited noise and waste;
opportunities for general social
engagement; and arranging visits to
relevant places or events of interest.
So far, several presentations and
demonstrations have been booked, with
more events being arranged.|

## **Financial Review**

Over the period, the Shed generated
income of £4,523. £2,000 was a grant from
Community First Yorkshire, awarded for the
purpose of setting up the Shed and building
a local shedders community. A further
£2,000 was from the George Martin Trust,
again for setting up the Shed, including
buying necessary tools and equipment.
A Trustee and a volunteer built a
workbench, which initially was intended for
use by the Shed but – given the longer-
than-expected period in securing premises
– was then sold for £500. A similar built
workbench has been retained, but may also
be sold if a satisfactory price is obtained.
At 5 April 2024, £1,137 had been expended
on tools, equipment and materials, leaving
£3,386 in cash balances. At that date, the
shed held equipment, tools and other
assets which the Trustees have valued at a
total of £919. There were no outstanding
liabilities at that date.
The Trustees are extremely grateful to
those generous individuals and
organisations who kindly donated
equipment, materials, and online software
for use by the Shed now and going forward.
Statement explaining the Para 1.22 During the establishment period, the
policy for holding reserves Trustees are ensuring that sufficient cash

The Shed currently does not have any
employees, nor any rental or other
contractual commitments. So at present,
no significant reserves are required.

ongoing interest in, a Shedders community;
and in securing and maintaining the interest
of funders and donors.
The Trustees recognise the severe
financial constraints currently impacting the
local authority, and other public and
charitable grant-awarding bodies. In
particular, as a start-up small charity it is
very difficult to secure grant funding,
especially for anything beyond physical
assets. There is the risk that, especially
until it secures premises, the Shed may not
be able to generate sufficient income to
develop in the way the Trustees would
wish.|

provides support and guidance to groups
across the UK in starting and managing
now over 1,300 Men’s sheds in the UK.
