Goals and Ministries

The Northamptonshire Chinese Evangelical Church (NCEC) continues to pursue its charitable purposes of advancing the Christian faith and serving the wider community. Our mission remains centred on proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ, affirming the doctrine of the Holy Trinity and the Apostles’ Creed, nurturing the spiritual life of believers and providing pastoral and spiritual support through regular worship, prayer, teaching and the administration of the sacraments.

In overseeing the planning and delivery of our ministries during 2025, the Board of Charity Trustees has continued to have due regard to the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit, particularly in relation to the advancement of religion through worship, discipleship, outreach and service to others.

Grace and Testimony

Worship, Teaching and Congregational Life

Our Sunday worship services are open to all. Average weekly attendance is approximately 45 people, with higher attendance during special services and seasonal celebrations, including evangelistic services, the Christmas Carol Service, New Year thanksgiving worship and major Chinese festivals. These occasions provide valuable opportunities for outreach, fellowship and engagement with the wider community.

Alongside Sunday worship, NCEC offers a range of regular gatherings that support spiritual growth and mutual encouragement. The Adult Fellowship continues to meet on the first and third Fridays of each month. Members take turns leading Bible study sessions, encouraging active participation, personal preparation and deeper engagement with Scripture, while also strengthening relationships within the congregation.

In addition, we organised the “Youth Worship and Sacred Music Training” in 2025. Through systematic teaching and practical application, the programme guided participants to reflect on the spiritual foundations of life as worshippers. The training concluded in December last year, and further arrangements will be made in due course in accordance with actual needs. The curriculum not only covered foundational knowledge of worship and sacred music and their practical coordination, but also placed strong emphasis on nurturing the qualities of the fruit of the Holy Spirit most desired in worship ministry. This helped participants to understand that worship is not based solely on skills or performance, but flows from a heart shaped by God and willing to submit to and respond to Him.

Our Sunday School ministry continues to provide children with care, nurture and ageappropriate teaching about Jesus and His teachings. All teachers are subject to DBS checks and operate in accordance with the church’s Child Protection Policy, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for children.

Building on our original calling, the church has continued to place emphasis on discipleship and leadership development. Teaching programmes introduced in 2024/2025 (e.g. “The Little Shepherd Biblical Counselling” and “How to Lead Bible Study Group”) have helped equip members to grow in spiritual maturity and to care for one another within the life of the church.

In addition to regular worship and teaching, the church provides pastoral support to members and their families at significant times of life. During the year, the church conducted a funeral

service, offering comfort, prayer and Christian hope to family and friends, and entrusting the departed into God’s care. The church remains ready to provide pastoral ministry in other major life events, in accordance with Christian teaching and pastoral need, as such occasions arise.

Retreat and Spiritual Formation

Following the positive experience of the 2024 retreat, the church held the second retreat on 21[st] April 2025, immediately after Easter Sunday. The retreat provided an opportunity for members to step away from daily routines for focused worship, teaching, reflection and fellowship. The speaker, Rev Stephen Leung, delivered biblical teaching that encouraged participants to reflect more deeply on the meaning of the Gospel and its implications for Christian living. The retreat contributed to the strengthening of spiritual growth, unity and mutual encouragement within the congregation.

In addition to the retreat, the Adult Fellowship continued to serve as an important platform for spiritual formation and life reflection. In July, our church arranged a special session led by Dr K S So, a visiting brother known for his dedicated service, who previously held senior positions in the education sector in Hong Kong and currently serves as a director of the Evangel Seminary, to speak on embracing life after retirement. Drawing on biblical principles and personal experience, Dr So’s sharing encouraged participants to reflect on vocation, faith and purpose in the later stages of life, and was well received by those in attendance.

Care & Compassion

Pastoral care constitutes an integral part of the church’s ministry. A weekly Prayer Group continues to meet every Friday to pray for the needs of individuals, families and the ministries of the church.

The Caring Group provides practical and spiritual support, particularly to those experiencing illness, bereavement or other challenging circumstances. Members of the group regularly visit individuals, pray with them and maintain contact by telephone when in-person visits are not possible. Through these ongoing efforts, the church seeks to demonstrate Christian compassion and mutual care.

Mission, Outreach and Community Engagement

During 2025, the church’s outward-facing ministry was expressed through focused seasonal engagement. On 22[nd] December, our small song-leading team, together with some members of the congregation, visited St John’s Care Home to sing Christmas carols for the residents. They also spent time conversing with these seniors and distributed small gifts as a gesture of care and goodwill.

This visit provided an opportunity to bring encouragement and companionship to elderly residents during the festive season, when they may experience isolation at that time of year. Through music, personal interaction and simple acts of kindness, the church sought to share the joy and hope of the Christmas message and to demonstrate Christian love in a practical and respectful manner.

The church remains committed to engaging with the local community in ways that are appropriate to its capacity and resources, with the aim of serving the public benefit and bearing witness to the Christian faith through compassionate action.

Financial Review

For the year ended 31[st] December 2025, NCEC continued to maintain a stable financial position while supporting its ministries and community activities.

Total offertory income amounted to £22,108, of which £4,930 were Gift Aid-qualified contributions. The remainder of the offertory i.e. £17,178 would be eligible for the Gift Aid Small Donations Scheme, subject to a limit of £30 per offertory and an aggregate cap of £8,000 for such offertories per tax year. In addition, the total tax refund under the two aforementioned schemes for the 2024/2025 tax year was £2,839. This was received in June 2025.

Total expenditure for the year was £14,025, of which indirect expenditure amounted to £12,432 (representing 89%). Such indirect expenditure included church rent, honoraria and insurance. After accounting for income and expenses, the church recorded a net of receipts/(payments) of £11,237 surplus, which strengthens reserves and ensures the continuity of essential operations.

These results reflect the generous support of our congregation and careful stewardship by the Board of Trustees. NCEC remains committed to transparent financial management and to using resources effectively to advance its mission of worship, evangelism and service in the community.

Continuity Reserve Policy

In accordance with the Charity Commission’s guidance on reserves (CC19), NCEC maintains a designated reserve of £2,700 to help mitigate the impact of unexpected shortfalls in offertory income. This reserve is intended to sustain essential church operations for approximately three months. The policy is reviewed annually each January to ensure it remains appropriate.

Structure, Governance and Management

The five existing Charity Trustees completed their first two-year term on 31[st] July 2025. Pursuant to Section 16 of the Constitution, all five were eligible and offered themselves for reelection. At the Extraordinary General Meeting held on 25[th] May 2025, resolutions were passed unanimously, re-appointing each Trustee for a second two-year term effective from 1[st] August 2025.

The Board of Charity Trustees continues to oversee decisions on all matters of general significance and concern to the church, ensuring effective governance, accountability and stewardship of NCEC’s resources.

The church’s financial statements are independently examined by Mr Paul Stokes, FCCA, in line with the requirements of Section 145 of the Charities Act 2011.

Acknowledgement

We wish to express our sincere appreciation to all brothers and sisters who contribute their time, effort and talents to support the life and work of the church. We are especially grateful to those who have provided ongoing encouragement, both financially and spiritually, helping sustain the ministry and fellowship of NCEC.
