Jive4All Trustees’ Annual Report: Year End October 31st 2024
Objectives and activities
The purpose of Jive4All as set out in its governing document is:
To promote inclusive access to modern jive dancing in an explicitly gender neutral environment including, but not limited to:
- The provision of facilities for recreation or other leisure time occupation for individuals who have need of such facilities by reason of their youth, age, infirmity or disability, financial hardship or social circumstances by providing facilities for the dancing of modern jive with the object of improving their conditions of life.
The Trustees confirm they have had regard to the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit.
The main activities undertaken in relation to these purposes:
-
★ Weekly modern jive dance classes, taught with explicit gender neutrality
-
★ Outreach activities held at community events
Weekly modern jive dance classes
Regular dance classes, provisioned in an explicitly gender neutral manner, provides public benefit as it includes members of communities who may otherwise not feel comfortable undertaking dancing activities in other spaces.
This addresses the key barriers to the participation of non-binary people in sport which are identified in the report "Non-Binary People, Sport & Physical Activity" funded by Pride Sports and Sport England as: Gendered spaces, Gendered Activity, Representation & Visibility, Language. When these barriers are addressed there is an increased likelihood of participation by non-binary people and resulting improvements in mental and physical health. This is crucial given that the report quotes research conducted by the National LGBT Partnership in 2016 which found that 64% of LGBT people who identified as something other than male or female (e.g.,genderfluid or genderqueer) were not active enough to maintain good health.
A regular class also provides participants with exercise and socialising, improving mental and physical quality of life.
"The health benefits of dance include the strengthening of bones and muscles; greater lung capacity; and increased strength, stamina and
endurance.......research suggests that regular participation in dance improves a person’s balance, co-ordination and flexibility, which means they’re are at a lower
risk of falling. Dance has also been found to lower the risk of osteoporosis; strengthen ligaments, tendons and joints; and even improve a person’s vision." "Dance has also been shown to improve cognitive functioning and memory" "The social aspect of dance means that it is also an effective way of improving a person’s emotional wellbeing by reducing loneliness and isolation and increasing feelings of value and worth through active participation."
Quotation from "Let’s Dance! How dance improves physical and mental health: A briefing for the Cross-Party Group on Arts and Health" from the Welsh NHS confederation
Entrance fee is kept low (£8 per person, with an introductory discount of £5 for the first 4 lessons). This is up to £4 pounds lower than the cost of other social partner dance classes in the Cambridge area. (Compared to West Coast Swing £8-12, Ceroc £10 and salsa £10)
The trustees are aware that the cost of classes may be a risk of harm to persons in financial hardship who wish to participate in Jive4All’s activities. The risk is minimised by keeping the entrance fee as low as possible whilst still being able to run classes. See Financial Review section for costs involved.
Outreach activities
Outreach activities, including free taster sessions and leaflet distribution were carried out to encourage more people to try dance, especially from groups who would feel excluded from classes with explicit male/female gender roles.

Financial review
Our income from entrance fees has been sufficient to cover costs, including purchasing the card reader.
Jive4All will aim to keep funds to cover predicted expenses for up to 6 months. This allows for variability in the number of members attending and to cover any unexpected expenses. We currently have £2321.22 available, enough to cover around 6 months of expenses. We also aim to have funds which can be used to further grow and develop Jive4All increasing the number of people benefiting as well as the benefit to each individual.
We have no funds or subsidiary undertakings that are materially in deficit.
Currently costs are kept low due to both DJs offering their services at a reduced rate and the dedication of our volunteers who provide teaching, beginner support, venue set up and door duties.
The continued feasibility and sustainability of Jive4All would not be possible without them. The trustees acknowledge the vital impact they have on achieving our objectives and greatly appreciate their support.
Structure, governance and management
Jive4All is a CIO. Its governing document is an association constitution.
Trustees may be appointed at the AGM by a simple majority of votes cast at the meeting. Additional trustees may be appointed at other times by either the members or the existing trustees.
