The Annual Report July 2024

It is easy to forget all the events, activities, discussions and decisions taken to get to this point. This time last year we were still involved with the Welcome Centre in Bangor that had housed Ukrainians for over a year. We said goodbye to the last 24 people from the centre who were bused over to Wrexham and other parts of North Wales. We helped to redistribute the clothes and crockery to those who had found homes in the local area. At the same time we were aware of new arrivals to Bangor who were asylum seekers from many different countries. Dyma Ni Befriending (a project of Croeso Menai) were trying to support the new arrivals but trying to understand who was responsible for settling them into the area. It became clear that Clear Springs had won the contact to relocate asylum seekers to houses but apart from an information leaflet there was no “on hand” support provided. At the time the Council had a remit to resettle refugees but not asylum seekers

It became clear that there was a big need here. To try and help support the asylum seekers who were rehoused in the area and work with Dyma Ni, to dove tail in with the work they were doing. DN were translating leaflets so people knew where they could get help, set up a weekly drop in, supported with paper work, college, accommodation problems, doctors and dentists, trying to liaise with Clear springs. It was clear that alongside this amazing support the asylum seekers needed activities to help get out of the house, keep active and to get to know the community. We did “Shout outs” for household goods, clothes, shoes, bikes. As people were not engaged with college we were able to buy gym membership, thanks to a kind donation from Cytun. We realised the importance of securing grants to pay for future activities and secured a grant from Cyngor Gwynedd – Healthy Living and Keep Active.

In order to liaise well and keep good communications between Dyma Ni and PiB we came together under Bangor Befriending.

PiB informed our asylum seeker friends of activities organised or info to be shared via Whats Ap. We also encouraged new Volunteers to help with activities offered. We started an evening “Drop in” every

Wednesday in Capel Emaus. These evenings are open to any refugees or asylum seekers in the area, we offer refreshments, play games, ask questions, English support, pick up clothing or household goods.

Emaus have also hosted our International Womens Day evening, Christmas events, coffee mornings and food sharing evenings.

We are so very grateful to Emaus - the minister and team have been so generous, flexible, supportive and committed!

At this early stage of working out how to best support we met in Multidisciplinary meetings with Clear Springs, Council reps, CAB, the Red Cross and other agencies who played a role in supporting.

In July we heard the great news that we achieved charity status. This is gives us official credibilty and helps when fundraising or applying for grants.

In order to offer a wide range of activities we reached out to local organisations. We have develped links with Cymdeithas Eryri / Snowdonia Society, RSPB, Carneddau Landscape Partnership, Climbing instructors, North Wales Wildlife Trust.

Through the Snowdonia Society we joined on litter pics up Watkin, Llanberis, Abergwyngregyn path, Ugly House footpath maintenance, Gorse cut back and went on mountain walks. We were invited to attend the Christmas party as a thank you, a make your own pizza and played Pictionary!

The RSPB organised regular activities in Penrhyn Castle and Plas Newydd – looking at the history, creating bird feeders, seed spreaders, Christmas wreathes plus walks in the mountain area.

Climbing instructors – have been very generous with their time and organised indoor and outdoor climbing sessions with the help of George.

The North Wales Wildlife Trust team were amazing and invited us to join the Sea Grass Project in Porth Dinllaen, collecting seeds and planting seeds

We were given clothes and donations many sources: Alpkit, Parchu Pentir July fun run, Buggies clothing, Capel Emaus, Capel Berea, Cytun, University Psychology and the general public. We have fundraised through various coffee mornings but our highlight was Dafydd Iwan singing for PiB in Pontio

In November we secured a grant from Cadw’n Actif Ffit Cymru which was an enormous boost to help as can pay for gym membership, sports

clothing, bikes, bike accessories, football equipment and creating opportunities to keep mentally and physically healthy.

We would not be able to give the support we do without all our generous and committed volunteers. They help enormously with attending our Drop in evenings, fundraising, giving lifts to events, helping with English learning and generally always there when needed. We thank them very much

And finally the Pobl I Bobl committee! A committed team of wonderful people who are willing to put time and energy into making the world a better place, reaching out to refugees and asylum seekers so they feel welcomed, valued and cared for in our community.
