History

The Men’s Shed in Aberaeron was set up, with a lot of expert support from Gill Byrne, by four men (Pete, Herbie, Warren, Mike) who help out at the Repair Cafe in Aberaeron.

Thank you Gill for all the work you have done for us.

The current premises were viewed in May 2023

Gill managed to secure us some funding from a number of places and guide us through achieving Charity Status.

Many months were spent installing a kitchen, and fitting out the workshop with home made work benches.

Open day February 2024 was attended by approx. 50 people. We have had 15 members enrol in the past year.

In March 2024 we had visit from Ben Lake MP (Plaid Cymru) who was very interested in what we do.

(Phone, WiFi, extra electrical work, shipping container, dust extraction system) have all been installed since then.

On the down side we are sorry that we have unfortunately lost the Motorbike maintenance and allotment aspects of our Men’s Shed.

Income generation

The members have been using recycled wood from decking and pallets, to make various items for sale. Our small children’s picnic tables have been very popular and we have an order for a Mud Kitchen. We have also repaired and sold some items donated to the shed.

Last year the trustees performed the Portable Appliance Tests for RAY, as we were trained and Certificated via the Repair Cafe.

For those who may be interested, we have acquired some short term garden maintenance work and a one-off cleaning job as well.

The wider community.

Throughout the year the Men’s Shed have been providing some maintenance support to RAY and helping out at RAY Ceredigion Play Day – Celebrating UK National Play Day.

We have had interest from Ty Glyn Davis Trust, Ceredigion PRU, the local police, and from our stand at the Play Day, a refugee support group, and child care / play groups.

Also, a thank you to BAM, the contractors for the flood defence scheme in Aberaeron, who have offered the Shed some wood and materials left over from their construction work.

Looking Forward.

The formation of the Men’s Shed in Aberaeron has been a steep learning curve for all involved. The trustees are all volunteers and come from a variety of backgrounds and experience, but not in setting up a shed or a charity.

Thank you to the members who have helped us along the way. A lot of hours and sometimes personal money has been spent to get to where we are today.

To progress, our main aims are to advertise the shed far more than we have done in the past, and to reduce our overheads.

By increasing our membership and reducing our costs, we will hopefully create a thriving Men’s Shed.
