Objectives and Activities

SORP reference
Summary of the purposes of
the charity as set out in its
governing document
Para 1.17 The purposes of the Charity are to promote
street band and outdoor music, to inspire
young people to be creative and play an
instrument, to promote public awareness of
the value and history of street band music
and to highlight Somerset's unique cultural
heritage. We also aimed to create links with
other similar festivals.
Summary of the main
activities in relation to those
purposes for the public
benefit, in particular, the
activities, projects or services
identified in the accounts.
Para 1.17 and 1.19 This was our first year of operation and we
collaborated with Mr Tim Hill, our current
artistic director and a national expert in
street bands and street band music. In the
relevant year Tim was in receipt of an Arts
Council England grant that enabled more
ambitious activities in collaboration with us.
He managed those funds independently of
Sound of the Streets although activity was
complimentary.
We established a youth street band, Sound
Invaders and a primary school street band,
Silver Sounds.
We promoted and participated in several
street performances.
We facilitated drumming workshops with
professional facilitators and in collaboration
with a local school and hosted a CPD day for
teachers and educators with facilitators from
Brass England.
In September 2023 we supported a free 3
day music festival in collaboration with
Taunton town council with an estimated
attendance over three days of 4000 people.
We created a film record of these events
collaboratively with young people.
We created a website and free online
resources for teachers and other street
bands.
We created a community Facebook page for
the use of the wider street band community.
Statement confirming
whether the trustees have
had regard to the guidance
issued by the Charity
Commission on public benefit
Para 1.18 Sound of the Streets is heavily reliant on
voluntary effort. All trustees are committed to
the concept of public benefit and have
worked toward positive contributions and
positive outcomes.

Contribution made by
volunteers
Para 1.38 Sound of the Streets is heavily reliant on
voluntary effort although the pool of regular
volunteers is relatively small. The tasks
undertaken vary from marshalling at events,
to managing social media, to running
workshops and performing. This is a critical
feature of our activity in remaining viable.
This includes the board of trustees and a
working committee.

Achievements and Performance

SORP reference

Summary of the main
achievements of the charity,
identifying the difference the
charity’s work has made to
the circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any wider
benefits to society as a
whole.
Para 1.20 Our achievements obviously are an outcome
of our activities. As stated above this was
our first year of operation and our main
achievement has been getting the charity up
and running. In this first year we collaborated
with Mr Tim Hill, our current artistic director
and a national expert in street bands and
street band music. In this year Tim was in
receipt of an Arts Council England grant that
enabled more ambitious activities in
collaboration with us. Given our income was
modest we relied heavily on volunteer effort.
In this year we established a youth street
band, Sound Invaders and a primary school
street band, Silver Sounds. This has helped
with confidence and self esteem and several
young people have carried their musical
involvement further, including becoming
band leaders in their own right. Sound
Invaders had the opportunity to compose
and record a track at a professional studio,
then planned and filmed a music video.
We helped promote and participated in
several street performances in several
locations in Somerset which promoted our
aim to raise awareness of the value of street
music.
We facilitated drumming workshops with
professional facilitators and in collaboration
with a local school and hosted a CPD day for
teachers and educators with facilitators from
Brass England. Participants took this
learning back to their schools.
In September 2023 we supported a free 3
day Street Band festival in collaboration with
Tim Hill and Taunton town council with an
estimated attendance over three days of
4000 people. This increased footfall in
Taunton, brought joy to participants and
showcased the possibilities of street music.
We created a film record of these events
We created a website and online resources
for teachers and other street bands.
We created a community Facebook page for
the use of the wider street band community.
