## **INTRODUCTION**

In late 2022, Tom Bereznicki wanted to help finance and promote dental education to early postgraduates and approached John Maloney at GC to see if he could arrange for Tom to sponsor a two-day training course at GC in Belgium. After various meetings, John suggested the most efficient way to achieve this was for Tom to gain Charitable status. As Tom’s experience of organizing and running events was minimal, he approached The College of General Dentistry and suggested a partnership – an approach that was approved by The College. An initial Board of 6 Trustees was selected; Tom Being nominated as Chair.

In February 2023, with legal help from hcrHewitsons, solicitors, Lancaster House, Nunn Mills Road, Northampton, Tom made an application to The Charity Commission for Charitable status and approval was received on 19[th] October 2023.

A Bank Account was opened at Coutts, 440 Strand London on 8[th] September 2023. Credit cards link to the account were issued.

The first Gift Aid donation of £200,000 was made on 8[th] September 2023 allowing The Charity to start. The Charity is currently and will in the near future be totally funded by Tom Bereznicki.

## **OBJECTIVE AND AIMS**

Initially, the objective was to advance the education of the members of The College of General Dentistry (company number 02586636) (charity number 1002769) in such ways as the Charity Trustees thought fit, including but not limited to the provision of financial support to the members to cover the costs of attending relevant training courses.

In the course of Trustee Meetings, it was decided that the Charity should aim its educational events at a wider range of dentists. The concept of restricting events to The College was changed to include all dentists but particularly the group from 1[st] to and including 5th year postgraduates, although it would not be restricted to that group depending on the event(s) being organised.

The Aim was and continues to be to provide affordable education - the registration fees for many organised Conferences and Meetings often run into high triple figures – a sum that younger dentists simply cannot afford. Participation would either be free and if not, then trying not exceeding double figures. Fees for events would be less for young dentists in the 1[st] to 5[th] Year Postgraduate group than older dentists. Two competitions are run free, one for dentists in 1[st] Year VT, the second for 2[nd] to 5[th] year postgraduate – details of these included below

**THE TOM BEREZNICKI CHARITABLE EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES FOR THE YEAR ENDED 5[th] APRIL 2025**

## **EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES ORGANISED**

While awaiting The Charity Commissions approval, plans were finalised to start our first initiative, namely a competition aimed at First Year postgraduate dentists – details below. Details of the competition were announced as soon as Charity status was approved. The response to the competition proved very successful and the winners travelled to Belgium on Wednesday 10[th] July 2024.

A second Competition on the same lines was run in 2025, included Dental Therapists, and 18 winners travelled to The GC HQ in Leuven Belgium on 9[th] July for three days. Again, it was very successful and there will be re-run next year.

Gestation planning was started to organize a one-day Symposium in London on the topic of Occlusion – a subject that is undertaught at undergraduate level. Prominent speakers were approached, all of whom agreed to present pro bono to allow a registration fee of £75. Initially, registration would be prioritized to dentists who were in the 2[nd] to 5[th] year postgraduate category, with plans to open registration to the remainder of the dental profession, including technicians nearer the date if spaces were still available.

In anticipation of the event going ahead, The Large Hall at Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea Town Hall just off High Street Kensington was provisionally booked and a deposit paid. Although the auditorium holds 310, the aim was to try to break even if attendance was around 200 delegates. Marketing started in March 2024

**THE TOM BEREZNICKI CHARITABLE EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES FOR THE YEAR ENDED 5[th] APRIL 2025**

The Symposium took place as planned and 165 paying delegates attended. A small loss was incurred

The Symposium was so well received with excellent feedback that it was decided to hold the same Symposium in Edinburgh along with the same speakers and this is booked to take place at Appleton Tower on Saturday 1[st] November.

A new competition was organised this year aimed at 2[nd] to 5[th] Year postgraduate dentists. Dentsply/Sirona kindly donated their facilities in Weybridge and a 2 Day Pilot course was organized in June 2024 with the feedback used to restructure the course – the 24 winners will be announced in September 2025, and the Course will be held for over two different dates in November – two groups of 12.

One other Symposium was organized to be held in London on 20[th] September as per the details below. Bookings are now open

## **AOB**

- The Trustees discussed forming a subcommittee of younger dentists and appointing them as Trustees – the feeling was that The Charity needed to better reflect the target group age and provide continuity in the long term. During the year Dr Susan Tanner resigned, and the following were co-opted as Charity Trustees:

   - Clare Denton – Secretary

   - Ronan Lee

   - Karina Kowalska

   - Balraj Sohal

   - Chris Leech

## **AGM**

Another Trustees meeting was held on 9.10.24 to coincide with the acceptance of the new Trustees.

- A virtual AGM was held over Zoom on 6.5.25 as the geographical spread of the Trustees is UK wide – the proceedings were recorded. There was one Apology – Dr Sohal and one, Chris Leech who at the last minute could not attend due to family issues. Both watched the video in their own time and did not have any points to raise. The recording has been saved. There was a quorum.

- **The Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh** - successful contact was made with The College and both Symposia mentioned above have been submitted for Accreditation. If received, The College will promote it to an audience of around 8,000 members

## **TRUSTEES' RESPONSIBILITY STATEMENT**
