STATEMENT OF FINANCIAL ACTIVITIES FOR THE YEAR ENDED 5[th] APRIL 2024

INTRODUCTION

In late 2022, Tom Bereznicki wanted to help finance and promote dental education to early postgraduates and approached John Maloney at GC to see if he could arrange for Tom to sponsor a two-day training course at GC in Belgium. After various meetings, John suggested the most efficient way to achieve this was for Tom to gain Charitable status. As Tom’s experience of organizing and running events was minimal, he approached The College of General Dentistry and suggested a partnership – an approach that was approved by The College. A Board of 6 Trustees was selected, Tom Being nominated as Chair.

In February 2023, with legal help from hcrHewitsons, solicitors, Lancaster House, Nunn Mills Road, Northampton, Tom made an application to The Charity Commission for Charitable status and approval was received on 19[th] October 2023.

A Bank Account was opened at Coutts, 440 Strand London on 8[th] September 2023. Credit cards link to the account were issued.

The first Gift Aid donation of £200,000 was made on 8[th] September 2023 allowing The Charity to start. The Charity is currently and will in the near future be totally funded by Tom Bereznicki.

OBJECTIVE AND AIMS

Initially, the objective was advance the education of the members of The College of General Dentistry (company number 02586636) (charity number 1002769) in such ways as the Charity Trustees think fit, including but not limited to the provision of financial support to the members to cover the costs of attending relevant training courses.

In the course of Trustee Meetings, it was decided that the Charity should aim its educational events at a wider range of dentists. The concept of restricting events to The College was changed to include all dentists but particularly the group from 1[st] to and including 5th year postgraduates, although it would not be restricted to that group depending on the event(s) being organised.

The Aim was and continues to be to provide affordable education - the registration fees for many organised Conferences and Meetings often run into high triple figures – a sum that younger dentists simply cannot afford. Participation would either be free and if not, then not exceeding double figures.

EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES ORGANISED

While awaiting The Charity Commissions approval, plans were finalised to start our first initiative, namely a competition aimed at First Year postgraduate dentists – details below. Details of the competition were announced as soon as Charity status was approved. The response to the competition proved very successful and the winners travelled to Belgium on Wednesday 10[th] July 2024.

Gestation planning was started to organize a one-day Symposium in London on the topic of Occlusion – a subject that is undertaught at undergraduate level. Prominent speakers were approached, all of whom agreed to present pro bono to allow a registration fee of £75. Initially, registration would be prioritized to dentists who were in the 2[nd] to 5[th] year postgraduate category, with plans to open registration to the remainder of the dental profession, including technicians nearer the date

In anticipation of the event going ahead, The Large Hall at Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea Town Hall just off High Street Kensington was provisionally booked and a deposit paid. Although the auditorium holds 310, the aim was to try to break even if attendance was around 200 delegates. Marketing started in March 2024

AOB

The College of General Dentistry offered the services of one of their staff, Clare Denton, to act as my PA part time – an offer gratefully accepted.

The Trustees discussed forming a subcommittee of younger dentists and appointing them as Trustees – the feeling was that The Charity needed to better reflect the target group age. Discussions were held and names suggested, shortlisted and approached for consideration.
