## **MEMORIAL GATES – TRUSTEES REPORT – FY 5 April 2024-2025**

## **Charity Number: 1203649**

Introduction.

In 2002 The Memorial Gates were inaugurated by HM The Queen. This was the culmination of much work by a previous committee, The Memorial Gates Trust which was led inspirationally by Baroness Flather. She was successful in raising sufficient funds to have the Memorial Gates built. The Trust was not a charity at that stage.

Establishment of The Charity.

In 2023 the application to become charity was commenced and on June 20[th] 2023 the Charity Commission registered the Memorial Gates as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation, Charity Number 1203649.

The objects of the CIO are:

1. To advance the education of the public in the contribution made by the people from the Indian Sub-Continent, the Continent of Africa and the Caribbean and the Pacific Islands who served in the Armed Forces of the Crown whether by land ,sea or in the air during the World Wars of 1914-1918 and 1939-1945 and subsequently through the provision of an educational programme and an annual Commemoration at the Memorial Gates in Green Park, London.

2. To promote good citizenship for the public benefit by making grants of financial assistance to the Royal Parks (Registered Charity No. 1172042) to assist in the upkeep and maintenance of the Memorial Gates in Green Park London. Activities Over Period to April 2025

1. The Charity with assistance from the Council arranged the Annual Ceremony on Commonwealth Day 10[th] March 2025 at The Memorial Gates which was attended by High Commissioners from The Commonwealth Countries

2. An Education Committee under the leadership of Dr Evans is in process of producing sample pages for a website with which to promote to Charitable Truste in order to obtain funding.

3. Fundraising has been an important part of where the Memorial Gates wish to be. Funds are need to promote an educational programme.

4. There is an important link with The Royal British Legion who have undertaken to fund the annual ceremony for three years 2024,2025 and 2026 via a Memorandum of Understanding signed July 2023. They have since undertaken to extend this agreement to fund the ceremonies for a further three years, 2027, 2028 and 2029

Plans For The Future.

Our idea of holding reception to take place in the House of Commons in 2025 has been put to one side as it involves too much financial risk. Instead, in 2026 it is intended to hold a more modest event in The East India Club, National Army Museum or Army and Navy Club. The purpose would be to raise the profile of the charity and to attract donations. Those funds would contribute to an educational programme and provide funding for the annual ceremony 2030 onwards.
