assist with community needs. The CIO has gained 5 Very Good rated
Food Hygiene Award from Peterborough City Council.
A considerable contribution is made by member volunteers on an ongoing
basis. Without this valuable contribution of time, enthusiasm and
8XP8rtise, St Joseph's Family Society would not have been able to realise
the amazing successes that have been achieved in the past ten months,
thus meeting its objectives.
Safeguardlng
Because we work with young people and vulnerabl8 adults our
S8fegu8rding policy was reviewed on a six month cycle. All volunteers were
enhanced DBS checked. Repeat checks will be Carried biannually.
G8neral overvlew and outlook
Like many other western societies and democracies, but perhaps to
more severe extent, In Peterborough and th8 surroundlng areas 8re
currently marked by increasing social and political division, and by
disruption and uncertalnty. There is less that blnds us as a society than
there was in previous generatlons.
Social medla and wlder demogr8phic developments mean that W8
increasingly live in silos, in universes of world view and identity - pro
Brexit / antl Brexlt, Covld19 Coronavirus Pandemic and the recent Cost of
Living Crisis have a knock on effect of a possible recession being just
some of many lines that now divide us as a society.
In a recent inquiry into the future of civil soclety, it was found that charit18S
and civil society must change if they are to meet the challenges our
SOCl8ty faces and required a call on charities, among other things to be
more accountable, and to stay true to thelr values.
We echo and welcome that challenge, as we are convlnced that charitles
have the potential to be 8n important wellsprlng of cohesion and
confidence. Not because they do 'safe', easy work, which creates a cosy
consensus. Far from it - charities by the nature of their work will divide
opinion. Charities are and must continue to be courageous advocates of
their diverse and sometimes competing causes. The potential here for
charities lies not in what they do or whom they help, but how they do it.
To put it starkly: charities have the potential to model the leadership that
the public expect but are not seen in politics or business or other areas of
nationaL Life.

St Joseph's Family Society
A Charitable Incorporated Organisation
Report of the Trustees for year ending 31 March 2024
We truly believe that the public- people from all walks of life - are longing
for strong, open, moral leadership. Charities have the potential to be a
source of trust, reassurance, pride and belonging, to lead the change we
need to see across society.
It's easy to think that 'charity' means 'raising money to help someone,. To
be fair. that's what many charities spend a lot of their time doing. However,
fundraising and charity do not mean the same thing at all. Charity means
kindness, generosity and consideration.
St Joseph's Family Society as a charity has a role, an important role, in
helping people in their communities to recognise this, and rise to the
challenge.
