Opie Jones Foundation Annual General Meeting (AGM)

Date : 23.6.25

Time : 20:30

Location : Virtual Opie Jones Foundation.

AGM 23 June 2025

Opie Jones Foundation summary of purposes – To support the physical, emotional and mental health of patients and their parents, guardians and families affected by childhood cancer; Raising awareness of childhood cancer and advocating for earlier access to NICE and/or MHRA Approved Cell and Gene Therapy for the treatment of childhood cancer.

The organisation provides grants to family members or patients of childhood cancer, to access approved therapies which support their physical, emotional and mental health. The grant process is through application. If successful, the charity pays the approved provider directly. The grant is to be used within one year and has a maximum amount applied.

The trustees have regard for guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit.

The trustees work to uphold the objectives of the charity as set out in the governing document.

The charity has provided support for parents of children who have or have had treatment for childhood cancer, 3 wellbeing grants have been successfully applied for and enabled parents to access therapy. A fourth sibling grant has been enquired about, which may lead to a grant award.

The charity held its first support group in June for parents of children who have received a diagnosis of cancer. The event was informal, and another group is planned for September.

Lucy has attended several high-profile events and taken part in interviews to raise awareness of the need for greater mental health support in paediatric cancer and earlier access to approved cell and gene therapies as treatment options for children with cancer. New guidance for conferences which are linked to pharmaceutical companies have been issued, these guidelines will unfortunately have an adverse effect on small charities such as ours i.e. opportunity for networking.

We are due to hold our third annual Climb for Kinder Care in September – raising awareness and funds for the charity.

The financial position of the charity is good. The current funds are unrestricted funds (donations). Increasing access to grants which the charity could benefit from is crucial. Consultations around accessing grants have been held and will be considered for the near future.

In 2026 we want to increase our financial position by accessing grants alongside raising money through donations.

Our trustees have been in position for 3 years, all would like to continue, we have a fifth trustee who may be joining the charity. Our trustees are committed to the charity and its objectives. This expands the skillset and widens the expertise on our board.

The new working name of the charity was formally agreed by the trustees and the charity commission – THRIVE FOUNDATION is the working name moving forward.
