## **TRUSTEES' REPORT**

## **05[TH] APRIL 2024**

The trustees are pleased to present their report, together with the independently examined financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31 March 2024.

The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK (effective 1 January 2015) (Charities SORP (FRS 102)), the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102), the Companies Act 2006 and the Charity's memorandum and articles of association .

## **Objectives and activities**

The objectives of the charity is to advance, support and promote the study and understanding of the Sunni Islamic faith and its intellectual traditions in accordance with its major theological schools, so as to bring it into conversation with the circumstances of modernity with the aim of fostering and developing religious and societal tolerance and understanding, through:

- Awarding scholarships, mentorships, maintenance allowances or grants tenable at any university, college, institution of higher or further education, or in a manner achieving such a goal.

- Providing education (including but not limited to the study of philosophy and other disciplines within the humanities) in the form of academic courses, classes and mentorship.

- Providing fellowships for the purpose of academic research.

- Facilitating the attendance of conferences, seminars, colloquia, and other associated academic activities.

## **Achievements and performance**

The charity has achieved a number of its goals in this period. It initiated four recurring academic grants for exceptional individuals at the higher education level (three internationally, and one locally). It also received a number of individual donations amounting to a figure that can support these four grants and beyond. The charity has begun to create an online profile through a website and is giving consideration to expanding its social media presence to attract wider support.

The charity is pleased to report that it has enjoyed a smooth experience in identifying exceptional academic individuals, and hopes to develop its outreach so as to identify as many of these individuals as possible. It has also enjoyed considerable success in fundraising through local communities thus far, though it recognises the need to expand and professionalise the fundraising eff ort. Challenges have included holding a stable trustee board, and operating the charity with limited personnel. The charity is going through the early learning experience of recognising best practice procedures, and ideal resources for the further professionalisation of the body. This eff ort has been continuous and the charity is pleased to say that it is growing eff ectively on a monthly basis.

## **Public Benefit**

Through the charity’s funding in this period of time four exceptional individuals were able to embark on a higher education journey that they otherwise would not have been able to enjoy, one of whom is reading for a PhD at the University of Cambridge. These candidates were assessed for their academic merit, and for the social benefit that their research is expected to bring in the communities they serve. It is hoped that through their work, their societies will experience a greater degree of cohesion and mutual understanding, this being the result of the proliferation of knowledge in general.

## **Grant making**

The charity never commits to providing a continual financial grant to an individual unless it knows with absolute certainty that it can fulfil the grant. So for instance, if a student undertakes a PhD, the full cost of tuition is noted and a grant is only offered if the charity already has this figure in its accounts. If it does not, a grant will not be offered. When the grant is offered that money is ringfenced for the applicant in question and cannot be used for any other purpose. This is to ensure that grant recipients are not left out of pocket mid-way through their academic journeys.

## **Trustees**

The trustees of the charity the year were as follows

Sheharyar Hasan – Appointed 14 June 2023; resigned 01 June 2024 Dr Younus Saleem- Appointed 14 June 2023 Zaheer Hanif- Appointed 14 June 2023; resigned 01 June 2024 Dr. Saad Ismail- Appointed June 2024

## **Financial review**

The charity received donations and gifts during the period totalling £119,373 the total income for the charity for the financial period was £119,373.

Expenditure for the period totalled £30,355 including £28,855 of charitable activities and £1,500 of governance costs, resulting in a surplus of £89,019.

The charity’s policy aims to hold no less than three months of unrestricted funding in reserve. Given a difficult economical situation, the charity currently has no reserves and any shortfalls are continuously covered by a related party until a desirable level of external funding is achieved.

The charity’s ability to develop further is dependent on its ability to develop a diverse funding base and much work is underway to build this. The Trustees are aware of the charity’s financial position at year end; the Trustees are satisfied with current financial position as at 05 April 2024 and continue to monitor it closely.

Approval

The trustees approved this report on the 05 February 2025.

Signed on behalf of the Management Committee
