Activities and objectives in the year
Our Aims:
By providing a sustainable, and flexible and multi-purpose, community-led hub (58 Flaxley Road) to host a wide range of activities, such as 'drop in' sessions, regular groups, and meetings/workshops, and provide space for partners, including charities / social enterprises, to also deliver activities including services.
In this second year we became more established as a charity, continuing to prepare for for
-
taking ownership of 58 Flaxley Road, Selby
-
for taking financial responsibility for the ownership and management of Our Space and its activities.
Our first member of staff as a Coordinator for the building was employed on our behalf by Up for Yorkshire. However, delays to the substantial refurbishment of the Our Space building resulted in the employee not being able to fulfil that aspect of the role, and focussing on the building work. She left her role after 1 year.
The building work was largely completed in the August of 2024, with volunteers
completing or rectifying some poor workmanship. It was not until December 2024 that some welcome events could finally be held.
New volunteer Fiona Scott took responsibility for training and coordinating volunteers, and getting the kitchen procedure set up, and a visit from Environmental Health gave positive feedback.
In January 2025 new Our Space Coordinator Alice Prince began her part time employment (with Up for Yorkshire as employer) with energy, attention to detail and a passion for people.
The cafe began slowly, a few mornings a week, with many quiet days. Over the following months attendance picked up, the number of trained volunteers grew, and Our Space started to come into its own.
Conversations were also ongoing at this time with “Working for Health” non-profit around renting some of the upstairs space.

Fundraising
Financial review
Our Space continued to be operate largely on monies from the Selby Big Local grant, administered by Up for Yorkshire, and paid for the Coordinator’s employment and further works to the Our Space building.
However, some success was had in fundraising which went towards some running costs and activities.
