AfSU’s aim is to help promote the socioeconomic development of those from the Afghan community in the United Kingdom by promoting opportunities in education. Summary of the objects of the charity set out in its governing document During the year, we focused on promoting educational and cultural engagement among Afghan students and young people in the United Kingdom. We organised a range of workshops, networking sessions, and community events in partnership with several universities (such as King’s College London, SOAS University of London, the London School of Economics, to name a few) to support personal and academic development, as well as to strengthen connections within the Afghan student community.
In addition, we facilitated limited educational support sessions for schoolaged students as part of our commitment to educational advancement. Section D Achievements and performance
Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year
During the year, we successfully expanded our outreach and visibility across UK universities. We hosted a series of academic and cultural events aimed at supporting Afghan students in higher education, including workshops on professional development and discussions on Afghan identity and community building. We also strengthened collaboration between Afghan student societies through networking initiatives and joint events, helping to foster a sense of shared identity and solidarity across campuses.
In addition, we provided limited educational support sessions for younger students as part of our commitment to promoting education and aspiration within the Afghan community. These sessions predominantly focused on supporting students who had come from disadvantaged backgrounds in achieving their very best with their GCSE/A-level exams. For many of our GCSE students especially (of which there were thirty in total), English was a second language, and as such required specialist intervention by tutors who were able to communicate effectively in the student’s own language. As well as this, we aimed to support our young people by helping them develop their English skills by signposting them to ESOL classes and resources.
Our charity, at this moment in time, was run and led by university students at the undergraduate level. By the end of the academic year, we unfortunately encountered operational constraints, with several of our key charity members progressing through their education into employment. This slowed down our operations, and meant we could not run at the scale we desired to. We have since addressed this issue by recruiting more volunteers and trustees, who have helped keep the charity proactive in providing its services. These individuals also include several highly experienced professionals, and as such we have been able to provide more specialised support in the years following the specific period this annual return is for. Overall, the year marked steady progress in advancing our mission to empower Afghan students, promote academic engagement, and build stronger community connections. Whilst we faced operational constraints, we worked to address these throughout the year.

Section E Financial review
We do not currently hold significant reserves, with only £16 in the Brief statement of the account at the end of the year for this annual return. This is because by charity’s policy on reserves the end of the year, we were redeveloping our provision and offer to potential beneficiaries to match our operational capability. This process took longer than expected as our trustees engaged in multiple workshops, focus groups, and capacity building sessions. The charity has no financial expenditure, and as such reserves were not necessarily required, as we have no outgoing expenses (no staff, assets, liabilities, debt, or anything similar). As the charity grows, we will review the reserves policy annually to ensure it remains appropriate for the scale of operations.
