Emerging from the Birn)irtgham Bla¢k Lives Matter protests of Jun¢ 2020, BRIG has. over the past five years,
established itself as a distinctiye civic organis*ion operating at the irnieisection of ¢ommunity voice, public
a¢countability and sy5tcm influene¢.
The Trust¢es are clear that BRIG'S role is nol to dupli¢at¢ the woth of others. It￿tad BRIG arts as a convenor.

During the ye8r, BRIG led and supported a range of activities that Contributed to raisiDS public awar¢ne$s and
under5tartding. ¢ivi¢ dialogue, democratic partiripation and ¢oll¢rtiY¢ action.
Public memoryy history and narra¢iv¢
During the year BRtG secured and organised delivery of Seeking Th¢ PioD¢ers (STP). a tW￿Ye￿ National Heritage
Lottery Fund programm¢, focused on placing Birn)ingham's anti-raci5t history at the rentr¢ of publie Men￿ry. Work
during the period con¢entrai¢d on programme set-up. re5¢ar¢hirhg pionccrs, 5torie5, development of an anti-racist
timeline spanning th¢ 1940s to the present day, the delivery of the Race History De*ctive programme and the design of
digital infr&strudure (inrluding a website), to 5UPPOrt futtwe publi¢ engagement al￿ exllibitions.
In pardlkl. BRIG support¢d early development Work ¢onn¢¢t¢d to MX60. markirtg the 60th anniversary of Malcolrn X's
visit to Sm¢tbwick. Thi5 work laid the foundation for fvture refledive at)d edU¢atiO￿2I activity linking Bim)ingham's
racial history with ¢ontemporary struggles for juslice.

BRIG'S vision to create an anti-racist ¢lty is Unde￿i￿7¢d by the belief that Tn¢aningful progress requires infornied and
reflective debate, wund¢d in an understanding of th¢ past and its continuing influence on pr¢seni-day lived experiences
of racism. During the reporting period, BRtG partnered with the Philosophers Yard to host a lively d¢bate 8sking the

BRIG cotw¢Ded the 2024 Sulnmit, at whi¢h mor¢ tha) 70 organisations signd the Anti-Racist Pledge. Cotnmitting to
working collectively towords an anti-ra¢ist Biniingham and West Midlands.
BRIG ha5 also been at the forefront of developing th¢ Anti Ra¢ist Places Framework (ARPF), supported by the West
Midlands Combined Authority. The framework is snlended to provide a eomprehtnsive but flexible guide, to help places
across the West Midlands, work collectivety to beco￿¢ attti-racist.
During th¢ year, the Birniingham City Patthership Board adopted a vision for Bimiingham to be¢ome 2 world-leading
anti-racist city by 2035.
