The Brunel Shed operates 38 weekly dementia-related activities per year in co-operation with Altzheimers Support Wiltshire to provide a safe environment where meaningful activity takes place with the support of volunteers on a one-to-one basis. This arrangement allows relatives/ carers to take time out from their caring duties.

Our organisational structure is based on the requirements of a CIO with policies and guidelines generally following recommendations from the UK Mens Sheds Association.

Section C Objectives and activities

The aims (“the Objects”) of The Brunel Shed are: To promote social inclusion for the public benefit by preventing people (particularly but not exclusively older men), within Corsham and the surrounding area, from becoming socially excluded, relieving the needs of those people who are socially excluded and assisting them to integrate into society through the Summary of the objects of the provision of facilities in which they can meet to undertake, jointly or individually, charity set out in its creative, physical or recreational activities, learn or pass on skills and knowledge and support each other socially. governing document

For the purpose of this clause 'socially excluded' means being excluded from society, or parts of society, as a result of one of more of the following factors: unemployment; financial hardship; bereavement or old age; ill health (physical or mental).

In 2023 The Brunel Shed provided a workshop environment within which groups of men and women worked side by side on individual, civic or community projects.

It provided an environment for conversation and social interaction between those who were retired, isolated or widowed, acting as a forum for the exchange of information and issues particularly affecting older people

Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)

Five weekly sessions were supervised by competent individuals, providing the opportunity of developing new skills to match the wide variety of projects undertaken.

By offering regular weekly sessions, the Brunel Shed reduced loneliness and isolation, particularly amongst elderly and widowed men.

It also provided benefit to the local community in the form of projects completed for local primary schools, councils, charities and churches.

The trustees of the Brunel Shed have followed the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit.

Section D Achievements and performance

Summary of the main The charity provided regular weekly sessions for members to attend and achievements of the charity experience friendship and shared undertakings. during the year Three of the weekly sessions were for general workshop and concentrated mainly on woodworking

One weekly session was for craft specialising in leaded glass work. The fifth weekly session was for a workshop activity specifically for clients with dementia, operated jointly with our local Wiltshire charity Altzheimers Support.

An active membership of 28-30 members was maintained, with the only memberships lost due to illness/death. All sessions were well supported. Members who had lost partners, had significant medical problems and were in need of relief from loneliness, benefitted from the friendship and mutual respect amongst members

A number of projects were undertaken for the local community, including village signs, notice boards, playground equipment for primary schools and restoration of stone mining equipment for a local museum

Financial viability was maintained by undertaking projects with material costs and donation provided by the clients.

Our Policy is to retain a minimum of 6 months fixed operating cost in Brief statement of the reserve, plus a further contingency for project materials of £2000. charity’s policy on reserves (In the full year Jan-Dec 2023 this would be £6,300 reserve; our cash reserve at that year end was £9980)

The principal sources of income were membership session fees, agreed material costs from clients, and donations principally from local organisations charities and individuals. Note: a significant proportion of the membership fees were collected before the 6[th] June start date for the accounts.

THE BRUNEL SHED Notes to accounts for nod 07 June to 31 December 2023 1. The Brunel Shed is a 'not for proff organisation. 2. The bulk ofThe Brunel Shed income is derived from the paymenl of both an annual and individual session subscnption paid by its members. The fees concerned are decided upon at each AGM. The trustees have discretion to waive such fees in agreed circUmstan￿s. 3. The Brunel Shed's other income is derived mainly from grants or donations from other bodies in appreciation of work done for such bodies wrthout charge. The Brunel Shed normally seeks reimbursement of expenditure on projects requested by customer bodies, but invoices are not generally prOdu￿d thal include any element for labour or services. 4. The Brunel Shed's principal asset is a shipping container that was purchased as having been pre-owned. The container is used principally as an overflow store for materials that cannot be accommodated with the main premises. Other assets comprise woodworking machinery and a wide range of hand tools. 5. As an associated activty The Bwnel Shed operates in association with Alzheimer's Support Wltshire what is known as the Memory Shed. This activity invohies engaging with a lirnrted number of those suffering from Alzheimer's in simple woodworking projects and related social activity.
