purposes for the public
benefit, in particular, the

services identified in the

Para 1.17 and
1.19
The main activity of Wendover Shed is
running a workshop for the public benefit. It
is aimed at preventing people, particularly
but not exclusively older men, within
Wendover and the surrounding area from
becoming socially excluded; also to relieve
the needs of those people who are socially
excluded and to assist them to integrate
into society through the provision of these
workshop facilities. In the interests of
maintaining a safe environment, those
enjoying the facilities of the shed are
Members.

whether the trustees have
had regard to the guidance
issued by the Charity
Commission on public
benefit
Para 1.18 The Trustees recognise the considerable
support and encouragement from the
Trustees and members who continue to

Achievements and Performance

SORP reference
Summary of the main
achievements of the charity,
identifying the difference the
charity’s work has made to
the circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any wider
benefits to society as a
whole.
Para 1.20 Initially when Wendover Shed was set up,
the trustees were mainly motivated by the
shocking statistic that the main cause of
death amongst men under 50 years of age
was suicide, with 75% of all suicides in the
UK being men. It still shocks us and we
know most sheds around the country want
to eradicate this statistic. Since we set up
three years ago we have collaborated with
many other organisations in Wendover
ranging from Dementia Support to the
Church, from other help groups such as
statutory Mental and Physical health trusts,
from voluntary transport organisations to
Gardening charities, from Parish councils to
specials schools. The potential is endless.
We can quote from one of our shedders
who has been honest in where the shed
has helped him - 'If it wasn't for Wendover
Shed I wouldn't be here". Despair, isolation
and loneliness are real; they affect
everybody in different ways as they journey
their way through life. The shed has
attempted and succeeded with some very
special people to make their life more
meaningful and wholesome. As a group of
volunteers/shedders you can see more
happiness, laughter and joy rather than
despair and sadness. There is still a lot to
do - but collaboration with other community
organisations will expand. We all have a
duty to look after and help each other.
People from different backgrounds have
come to visit be it the Lord Lieutenant, ITN
News, Chair of Bucks Council, Sec of
Wendover Community Board, CEO of Clare
Foundation and so the list goes on. Most
important though are the shedders - they
make things tick! It’s their regular
attendance make me think that all the effort
is worth it. In one word the charity has
given people hope and it is hope that binds
us all together
