## Agenda Item 4: Chair’s Annual Report 2023-24

## **Review of the 2023 season**

1. We enjoyed another highly successful season last year with the overall number of visitors numbering 4652 - only marginally down on last year’s record of 4718. Were it not for the fact that we had to close on Mondays from June 5[th] because of a shortage of volunteers, we would almost certainly have broken the record. Many museums have experienced a decline in visitor numbers since the pandemic but we continue to flourish.

2. One record we did break was the number children visiting the museum – 1143 this year compared with 1065 in 2023 and just 290 in 2018 - the last year when we charged for entry. The new range of children's activities have clearly been a big attraction.

3.The biggest success story of the year was the award of a £34,580 grant from the National Heritage lottery fund to make the Museum’s collection accessible to all, both online and within the local community. Our trustees Matty Cambridge and Chrissy Milton deserve huge praise for their work in putting the successful grant application together.

A primary aim of the Dynamic Collections Project is to make a wider range of people aware of, and involved, with Salcombe’s maritime heritage. The grant has enabled us to fund the employment for one year of two Engagement Project Officers - Abigail Gray and Caroline Flage - on a job share basis. Abigail, who previously served as Curator at the Devon Rural Archive, has many years of experience in the heritage sector, while Caroline is an experienced teacher and runs the Young Salcombe Centre. More details of the project are set out in the next part of my report.

4. We were also successful in securing an AIM/Pilgrim Trust Remedial Conservation Grant for the conservation of 8 metal objects.

5. Our new CIO charity (no. 1203233) was registered by the Charity Commission on 24th May 2023 but did not become fully operational until 6th December when we transferred the assets across. We have had to keep the old charity going as a ‘shell’ for the time being because only a handful of members responded to a request to change their standing order payment instructions and so most are still paying their annual subscriptions into the ‘old’ charity (no. 268909). My thanks go to our Treasurer Jasper Evans for all his hard work in securing the change to CIO status

6. The most notable additions to our collection this year have been a captain’s writing box from Jane Bass, wife of former Museum Chairman Tim Bass, who sadly passed away in January 2023. Tim very kindly left the museum £5,000 in his will - a very welcome boost to our finances.

Bruce Grant of Newfoundland donated two oil paintings of the Salcombe schooner _Speedy_ , which he shipped across the Atlantic. The paintings need extensive restoration by a professional conservator and so we are seeking a further grant from AIM/Pilgrim Trust to fund the work.

7. A very successful Kids Takeover Day was held in the museum on 13th November, when all the Salcombe Primary School children enjoyed a wide range of activities. We also hosted a visit from Marlborough Primary School and went out to West Alvington, Charleton and Thurlestone Primary Schools to explore with the children what it must have been like living through the Second World War.The new Lottery funded Dynamic Collections Project will build on these connections.

## **Plans for the 2024 season**

1. This year we are celebrating our 50[th] Anniversary. The museum was founded in 1974 in the old Cook’s Boatstore on Customs House Quay (now the Art Club) and moved to the Old Council Hall in 1992. We will be marking the event on a number of occasions throughout the year culminating in a birthday party on November 6[th] for volunteers past and present. A souvenir booklet which sets out the history of the museum is available free to members and during the course of the year we will be publishing ‘SE50’ an illustrated book setting out 50 things to do in Salcombe using artwork and material prepared by local children. The latter have also contributed to this season’s special exhibition, ‘SE50’, which illustrates the development of the museum’s collection over the years.

2. The museum re-opened on March 28th and will close for the year on October 31st. Thanks to a successful recruitment drive, which resulted in 6 potential recruits, we are now planning to re-open on Mondays from April 15[th] . To date, however, we have been unable to fill the Sunday morning shift which Keith Higgins undertook for many years. Keith is now on our ‘reserve list’. Sue Flynn has had to retire as a steward because of mobility issues. My thanks to her for all her years of excellent service. Angela Cater has kindly agreed to take on the Steward Co-ordinator’s role.

3. Abigail and Caroline, our new Engagement Project Officers, started work on January 8[th] and since then they have been busy creating activity boxes and handling collections and organising workshop and storytelling sessions with local schools, youth and community groups. The Curious Club, a newly-formed holiday club for youngsters, met for the first time in February and promises to be a great success. Other planned initiatives include ‘Museum on Tour’ and ‘You’re Salcombe’ which will collect local memories. With the assistance of Museum volunteers, Abigail and Caroline will also be making many items in the collection accessible online via the Museum’s website and social media. A list of planned activities is set out in the appendix.

4. Finally, I would like to express my thanks to our wonderful team of volunteers, particularly the stewards, without whom we wouldn’t be able to keep going. A big thank you too, to all my fellow trustees who do so much behind the scenes.
