STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE & MANAGEMENT
Governing Document
Stacked Wonky Foundation Limited is a charitable company limited by guarantee, governed by its Articles of Association. The company was incorporated on 26 May 2021 and registered as a charity on 17 May 2023.
Recruitment & Appointment of Trustees
In selecting individuals for appointment as Trustees, the Trustees have regard to the skills, knowledge and experience needed for the effective administration of the charity. Recruitment is undertaken by advertising Trustee vacancies locally and nationally, supported by an open and inclusive selection process undertaken by current Trustees.
The charity has adopted and refined a Trustee Induction Checklist and Timeline for the induction and training of new Trustees, covering organisational and financial overviews, strategic planning, governance and legal responsibilities, board operations, charity culture and values, training and resources. A training review for Trustees is conducted annually. The charity continues to work closely with Spark Somerset to access training and networking opportunities for Trustees.
Organisational Structure & Management
The charity's artistic, educational and community engagement strategy is delivered by the Artistic Director, Sarah Shorten. The Artistic Director is responsible for the day-to-day running of operations and the HQ, supported by a Project and Engagement Lead, Angela Newbold.
Responsibility for contracting and managing freelance artists is delegated to the Artistic Director. Artistic and project-led decisions are taken by the Artistic Director in conjunction with the Project and Engagement Lead and project teams. The Artistic Director confers with Trustees where support is needed regarding safeguarding, financial and operational issues.

Business planning and devising a fundraising strategy is undertaken by Trustees and the Artistic Director. The Artistic Director is remunerated on a project-by-project basis, benchmarked by Trustees following Equity guidelines. All freelance artist assignments and rates of pay follow Equity guidelines. All other responsibilities are undertaken on a voluntary basis.
Risk Management
The Trustees review risk as a standing item at board meetings. They also regularly review new conflicts of interest, financial controls and delegated responsibilities to ensure appropriate oversight of the charity’s activities.
The principal risks facing the charity are securing sufficient unrestricted funding to cover core operating costs and an over-reliance on a small number of individuals for key functions. Steps are being taken to address both.
Safeguarding is also a standing item on the board agenda. The charity's named Safeguarding Lead is the Artistic Director, supported by Deputy Safeguarding Lead, Dr Ian Kelham. The charity has a comprehensive safeguarding policy in place, and all those working regularly with children and young people are subject to appropriate DBS checks.
The charity is supported by Spark Somerset and is a member of One Dance UK - both organisations provide guidance on financial governance, operating policies and best practice.
Serious Incidents
During the financial year 1 August 2024 to 31 July 2025, the Trustees confirm that no serious incidents occurred that required reporting to the Charity Commission. The Trustees are aware of their duty to report any serious incident promptly to the Commission and have procedures in place to ensure this obligation is met.

-
The presentation of site-specific dance productions.

Public Benefit Statement
The Trustees have referred to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit when reviewing our aims and objectives, and in planning our future activities.
Stacked Wonky delivers public benefit through: (i) the creation and presentation of sitespecific performances, (ii) an innovative and evolving arts education programme for children and young people, and (iii) authentic engagement shaped by, and with, our community, primarily focused in our High Street HQ.
Our work is often presented in unexpected, yet accessible, community settings and public spaces in West Somerset, regionally, and beyond, ensuring high-quality performing arts are available to participants and audiences who might not ordinarily engage with them. Our nationally recognised Academy and Young Associates programmes are offered at low or no cost to ensure financial circumstances are not a barrier to participation.
Through partnerships with local schools, colleges, and organisations, such as Somerset Wildlife Trust, housing associations, and home education providers, we widen our reach to children, young people and underserved communities. Our HQ, once an old shop unit, and now an established creative hub on Porlock High Street, provides an open door and vibrant, welcoming space for local people throughout the year.
Volunteers
The charity has developed its volunteer programme to welcome 8 regular volunteers, whose activities include stewarding at performances, acting as chaperones for young performers, assisting with event planning, supporting marketing initiatives, and organising fundraising events.
We estimate our volutneers contributed approximately 120 hours during the reporting period, alongside sourcing donations of props, equipment and office furniture.

Main Activities During the Year
Productions
The charity enjoyed another successful year with regard to productions and professional practice.
Working in partnership with the National Youth Dance Company and its alumni, 8 young performers aged 15 to 21 were commissioned by a group of national arts organisations to create a new work examining young people’s views of adult political power. The performance, Are You Here For The Meeting? , premiered at Minehead Bay Festival in August 2024 before embarking on a national tour.
One of our Young Associates, Ernie, aged 18, was commissioned by Applause Rural Touring, East Quay, and Landmark Theatres to choreograph his first work, 55 , a duet performed with Gerard Bell, 55 years his senior. Following a series of successful pilot performances across the South West in summer 2025, Ernie has attracted support for a national tour in 2026.
In June 2025, Artistic Director, Sarah Shorten, was awarded a Jerwood Foundation Choreographic Research Bursary to deepen her understanding of how professional adult dancers and young children can work together in parity.
Educational Programme
Our Academy and Young Associates programmes went from strength to strength.
Inclusive Academy sessions, offering high quality education in the performing arts, were delivered in Porlock, welcoming over 60 children and young people every week. The year closed with a film festival containing works created by those attending.
For exceptionally talented youngsters aged 13+, the charity expanded its Young Associates programme, designed to “super-charge” futures in the performing arts, to meet increasing demand. With enhanced funding from Hinkley Point C Community Fund, we ran a series of masterclasses with professionals from across the UK focused on new disciplines, such as filmmaking, puppetry and digital dance creation.
We expanded outreach by supporting Drama and English teachers at West Somerset College and Minehead Middle School via a series of devising and poetry workshops during summer 2025.

While We Still Can
A group of young people harnessing creativity to tackle climate and environmental destruction flourished locally. They toured their unorthodox pop-up shop encouraging behavioural change, Down To Zero , across Somerset, culminating in an invitation to present at The Ernest Cook Trust’s national conference.
The group were also entrusted by the National Trust to design an inscription for a boardwalk on Porlock Marsh, the longest in the South West at 125 metres, reflecting young people’s feelings about the threat posed to the SSSI by climate change.
Public Education
Our Artistic Director was invited to speak about Stacked Wonky’s work at national events such as YFX , Sadler’s Wells’ National Youth Dance Festival in July 2025, and locally via a “kitchen conversation” at East Quay in Watchet.
Community Engagement
Creative community engagement activities have strengthened and expanded.
Our weekly Open Practice dance sessions for adults in Porlock Village Hall remain a well-loved fixture of village life for many. Our Artistic Director has now become a Trustee of the Hall to share safeguarding expertise and widen access for young people.
Our HQ on Porlock High Street continues to offer an open door and resources to families, businesses, and local organisations, welcoming more than 80 visitors/month (boosted through inclusion in Somerset Council’s “Help Through Winter” initiative).
We have hosted an array of community-led initiatives, such as a weekly art club, women’s circle, soup lunches, creative workshops, and book launches.
We provided community organisations and events, such as Late Night Shopping, Traders of Porlock and a local amateur theatre company, with expertise and equipment.

ACHIEVEMENTS & PERFORMANCE
Highlights of the Year
Productions: Are You Here for the Meeting? and 55
The charity achieved national acclaim for its performance, Are You Here for the Meeting? .
Five leading arts organisations - Greenwich & Docklands International Festival, FABRIC, Landmark Theatres, Sadler’s Wells and Strike A Light - came together to commission the work, foregrounding the brilliance of young makers.
After a local premiere, the performance travelled to Dancing City outside the newly built V&A East Museum in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park as part of the prestigious Greenwich & Docklands International Festival. Our young performers delivered an emotionally and politically resonant performance to audiences over 800 strong.
“Thought-provoking. Amazing. The trauma of youth. All emotions. Made me think that we are all so similar just at different times. Best thing I have seen all day.” Audience feedback from GDIF

A national tour included an invitation to perform at YFX , Sadler’s Wells’ National Youth Dance 4 Festival, for an audience of dance leaders and influencers from across the UK. The cast experienced their first standing ovation! Here is what Hannah Kirkpatrick, Head of National Youth Dance Company , said after watching the performance:
“Stacked Wonky may be based in a tiny Somerset village, but their impact is enormous - locally and nationally. They have created opportunities for their young people to tour the country, connect with peers from other regions, and be programmed, commissioned, and paid by leading arts organisations. Their work is of an exceptional standard.”
55 , a duet for Young Associate, Ernie, aged 18, and Gerard Bell, 73, brought unexpected reward. Despite pursuing an untraditional route into dance via boxing, Ernie was commissioned by three national arts organisations to choreograph his first work.
Ernie says: “This is a duet for the two ends of life. It touches upon what Gerard knows and I don’t; what I have and Gerard has lost; and what we both hold in common.”
A series of pilot performances in the South West triggered a profound emotional response, with audience members often in tears.
“Hits you right in the core. So beautifully human, astounding for a debut work!” Audience feedback from Welcome Weekender Festival
Ernie has subsequently received support to deliver a national tour in 2026 starting at his birthplace in Barnstaple, heading towards Gerard’s in Tunbridge Wells.

Both 4Are You Here For The Meeting? and 55 have shifted perceptions of what young performers and choreographers are capable of at a professional level. They have set an important precedent for others nationally.
For those involved, the journey has been formative.
“Stacked Wonky’s work is so, so vital. Being taken seriously in Are You Here For The Meeting? has shaped how Iola sees herself. Sarah treated the cast like emerging professionals. They were paid for their work, which makes a huge difference at an age where young people are so often underestimated or overlooked.” Helen, mother of performer, Iola, aged 15
Awards and Recognition
Our Artistic Director was presented with One Dance UK’s “Young People’s Dance Champion” Award in January 2025, in recognition of her outstanding contribution to youth dance nationally. Receipt of a Jerwood Foundation Choreographic Research Bursary in June further underlined her prominence in the sector. Finally, as a keynote speaker at Sadler’s Wells’ National Youth Dance Symposium in July, she was able to share with her peers just what makes Stacked Wonky so special, rebellious and pioneering.
Academies
Our Academies, serving any young person wishing to cross our path from coastal and inland communities in West Somerset, flourished and diversified.
Demand remained high, with an average of 60 children and young people, aged 5 to 18, attending weekly in Porlock. A majority have attended for over 3 years, allowing us to closely track and support their development via hundreds of micro-interventions and conversations.
We retain a focus on hard-to-reach communities: over 50% attending are boys, who often struggle with traditional school structures and academic expectations. Around 35% self-define as neurodivergent, reflecting our enhanced commitment to inclusivity and tailored support for those with different learning and social needs. We want each individual to recognise and deploy their unique talent, whilst finding a connection with others, audiences and community.
“I’m a proud Stacked Wonky veteran of 12 years and would like to say something about this honestly incredible performance art company that many of us call home. Stacked Wonky is not just a place for young people but a place of them, that they built, that I know as a rollercoaster ride of emotions and ambitions.”

Film Festival 4
This was a real highlight of the year.
Over 6 intense months, we nurtured ideas “directly from the minds of children” at the Academy via storyboarding, shooting and editing to become 7 glorious, quirky films shown at our first ever Film Festival in July 2025. It was equipped with a red carpet, popcorn and awards, and was an evening full of joy for participants, families and supporters.

Young Associates 4
The programme expanded to provide tailored support to 14 exceptional dancers, directors, designers, musicians and filmmakers aged 13+, each with a creative itch to scratch. In a region devoid of hands-on, professional performing arts opportunities, we listened to aspirations and responded.
Key outcomes included:
Ernie , aged 18, blazed a trail nationally as a young choreographer with 55 . As part of his journey, he joined Pavilion Dance South West’s Young Choreographers programme, having applied for a Somerset Community Foundation “Training and Employment Support Grant” with our help. Working as an Academy Assistant Workshop Leader, he is a source of inspiration for his peers.
Iola , aged 15, was the youngest performer in Are You Here For The Meeting? Despite a huge learning curve, she became a vital contributor and now has ambition to join the National Youth Dance Company.
Ethan , aged 16, has attended Stacked Wonky for over 10 years. His passion for the environment has found a natural home in While We Still Can . He delivered an audacious performance presentation in front of industry experts at The Ernest Cook Trust’s national conference to rapturous applause. He wants to combine his creative advocacy skills with an Ecology & Conservation degree in the future.
Mia , aged 14, was invited to become a production assistant for Are You Here For The Meeting? Despite struggling with social anxiety issues, she travelled to Sadler’s Wells East in London to help deliver the performance, receiving unsolicited praise from Sadler’s production team.
Our Young Associates have inspired the wider Academy community, carrying the message that all participants can become change-makers.
As part of the wider programme, we continued to build important relationships with local careers advisers in schools to provide specialist performing arts guidance and delivered taster days at West Somerset College during work experience week in July 2025. Our input not only highlighted the challenges young people face in accessing equal opportunities in the arts compared to other fields, such as STEM, in West Somerset, it also offered hope.

Young Associates highlight of the year4
Poppy , aged 20, was a pivotal performer in an early work, The Landings , and joined our Academy soon afterwards. Life hasn’t been easy for her in recent years - she became homeless, was unable to continue her studies and was struggling to find appropriate support through Social Services. Throughout, she returned our calls, dropped by and met for coffees. In July, we pressed “submit” on a reference for her – after finding her way back to college, she was offered a position as a Family Worker at a women’s centre in Bridgwater. We believe the work we do is truly life-changing for some young people.
While We Still Can
The group’s pop-up shop, Down To Zero, designed to tackle consumption of single use plastics, was in demand throughout the year. Having attended local events such as the Exmoor Festival of Nature and Minehead Climate Fair, the group received an invitation to deliver a key note speech at The Ernest Cook Trust’s national conference in March 2025.
This presented a huge challenge. The group designed and delivered a terrific performance presentation for assembled experts and guests. Down To Zero is now considered a stand-out example of creative youth-led action that has been captured in a digital playbook by Research Fellows from Exeter University (https://lestari.org/projects/while-we-still-can/).
The group was shortlisted for a BBC Radio Somerset Make A Difference Green Award in June 2025.
Stacked Wonky HQ and Community Engagement
We are humbled and proud of the way in which our HQ has ignited ideas and been appropriated by our community. Visitor numbers have increased by a third and it is now a designated safe space for children and young people - the only one in the village.
To foster a deeper relationship between our organisation and the space we regularly use for sessions, our Artistic Director became a Trustee of Porlock Village Hall. She has helped overhaul safeguarding procedures and made suggestions for more inclusive access and use.
As a result, we asked to take the lead on the Hall’s centenary celebrations. We delivered an unorthodox exhibition in which each decade in the Hall’s life was creatively interpreted by individuals in the community. Exhibits included oral histories collected by a local historian and delivered on a park bench via headphones, and a quirky public broadcast film devised by a 12 year-old explaining the forgotten role the Hall played during WW2. The event and attendant ceilidh were a fabulous success uniting all ages in dance and appreciation of the Hall’s history.
“The best day ever. I didn’t stop smiling. This was Porlock at its best.” Chair of the Parish Council

Performance of Fundraising Activities Against Objectives Set
-
Academies increasingly financially robust through a mixed model of fees raised and grants, enabling bursaries for up to 20% of those attending experiencing financial hardship.
-
Increased revenue from commissions and touring fees – Are You Here For The Meeting? was fully funded and 80% of 55 total costs were recouped.
-
Funding for our Young Associates programme from HPC Community Fund doubled due to exceptional outcomes achieved. Invitation received to apply for their Open Grant programme (up to £50k over 2 years) in December 2025.
-
Submission of a Theatre Tax Relief application for Are You Here For The Meeting? , totalling circa £12k.
-
A greater percentage of HQ and operational costs met via grant funding - further work required to achieve full funding.
-
Revenue generated from donations/other trading activities rose from 12% to 21% of total income.
Challenges and How We Responded
Securing unrestricted funding to cover core operating costs remains our most significant challenge. To mitigate this, the charity employs an arts sector specialist accountant and has explored eligibility for Theatre Tax Relief for performance projects.
We are aware fundraising responsibility currently falls too heavily on the Artistic Director. The appointment of Trustee, Maya Clayden, brings valuable sector experience, and we have prioritised recruitment of a Development Manager to share this load more equitably.
We continue to build strong relationships with key funders, particularly Somerset Community Foundation, and new funders, Arts Council England, to ensure they understand our work and its value.
As our profile has grown, we have recognised the need for clearer internal processes around evaluating and selecting which opportunities and partnerships we enter into: this remains an area of active organisational development.

5 FINANCIAL REVIEW
Summary of Financial Performance
The charity’s financial position remains stable. Income increased from £80,448 (2023/24) to £95,028 (2024/25), a rise of 18%, predominantly driven by an application for Theatre Tax Relief following performances of Are You Here For The Meeting? , boosting the charity’s unrestricted funds to £14,321.
Restricted funds at year-end reduced from £34,482 (2023/24) to £10,552 (2024/25) due to completion of substantive projects during the accounting period. Once again, in a difficult funding environment, we have been successful at raising funds via different funding streams and increasing the number of organisations supporting us.
