Friends of Harrogate Hospital
Charitable Incorporated Organisation
Charity information and Trustees' Annual Report
Year ended 31 December 2025
Introduction
The financial statements are for the year ended 31 December 2025.
Friends of Harrogate Hospital (FOHH) was originally set up in 1966 as The League of Friends of Harrogate Hospitals registered with the Charity Commission, Registration number 252376. We subsequently merged with Harrogate Hospital Community Charity (HHCC) in 2015. HHCC Charity Commission registration is 1050008.
In 2023 FOHH decided to form a separate Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) and operate independently from HHCC. The Friends has always been a volunteer led organisation and continues to be so. The CIO is registered with the Charity Commission, registration number 1203016. The CIO has no office and no paid staff - 95% of the money raised goes into purchasing equipment to improve the patient experience in our area.
The general economic climate has had an enormous impact on our fundraising activities following Covid in 2020 and the slow return to some form of normality.
During the period of this report the Friends approved £35,481 to purchase 13 pieces of equipment, compared to £32,457 in 2024. To celebrate their 60[th] Anniversary the Friends have committed £100,000 to purchase equipment in 2026.
Administration
The Friends of Harrogate Hospital, registered charity number 1203016, is registered at the home address of the Chair, John Fox, 26 Malden Road, Harrogate, HG1 4SF. The charity maintained a bank account in its name with Virgin Money. This year we opened an account with The Co-Operative Bank for fundraising purposes.
The Trustees together with committee members form the management committee of the charity. The 3 defined Officers of the charity during the year were John Fox (Chair), Jeannette Wilson (Secretary) and Jane Leah (Treasurer). The Management Committee met 6 times during the year.
The list of Trustees and members of the management committee are detailed on page 1.
Structure, governance and management
The charity is governed by a Constitution approved on 21 February 2023. It is not considered to need further revision at this time.
The CIO is using this special year to identify people with the required skills to become Trustees and volunteers to take the Charity forward. Like many local charities we have struggled to recruit in recent years. This year we encouraged trustees and volunteers to participate in the Hempsons Trustee training webinars in the autumn.
Risk management
The trustees have a duty to identify and review the risks to which the charity is exposed and to ensure appropriate controls are in place to provide reasonable assurance against fraud and error. We have made progress during the year.

Objects
The objects of the charity are contained in the Constitution. The current objects of the CIO are:
-
The relief of sickness and the preservation of health among people residing permanently or temporarily in and around Harrogate, North Yorkshire.
-
To assist in the treatment and care of people suffering from mental or physical illness of any description, or in need of rehabilitation because of such illnesses, by the provision of equipment, facilities and services ancillary to those provided by statutory authorities in and around Harrogate, North Yorkshire.
Fundraising
Despite the poor economic climate the Friends have continued to be able to support Harrogate Hospital through generous donations from local businesses and individuals. The Friends launched Enterprise Friends, an initiative to encourage local business and organisations to support the work of the Friends.
We have organised fundraising events and continued to be involved with community groups. We started in February 2025 with ‘Afternoon Tea with Friends’, Special Guest Speaker, Colin Alderson, best known as Pastry Chef to Queen Elizabeth ll. In March Harrogate Harmony, a local choir, raised £1,100 at their Charity Concert at The Oatlands and in April ‘An Evening with Eric Knowles’ a British antiquarian and television personality at Ashville College. All these events were a great success. In September we had a stand at the Harrogate and District Foundation Trust (HDFT) Members Annual meeting in The Pavilions where we raised our profile with the members and staff. In December we had a stall at Boroughbridge Christmas Market for the first time. EnviroVent staff held a staff day to support the work of FOHH. High Moor Farm Caravan Park held weekly raffles in the Club House and had FOHH collection boxes in reception and the hospitality areas. Two FOHH Trustees were invited to be witnesses at a wedding in return for a donation, another first! We have increased the number of collection boxes around our area. The boxes help to raise our profile whilst generating small amounts of cash. During the period we have noticed a continued shift away from cash to card. We thank everyone who has contributed throughout the year. We greatly appreciate your support and we know the patients appreciate your contribution.

Refurbishing the ‘Friends Garden’
‘The Friends Garden’ was originally opened on 24 August 2001 by Baroness Masham of Ilton. It provided a tranquil place in the Hospital where patients, visitors and staff could relax and have some quality time. After Covid it was covered in scaffold for a while. When the scaffold was removed the Friends wanted to restore the garden. The Friends wanted to create a sensory garden accessible for all, featuring a sculpture created by local artist, Steve Blaylock, ‘The Tree of Life’. We have been working on it for two years, but we are now nearing completion. We are extremely grateful to Morgan Sindall Construction and their subcontractors and suppliers who volunteered to carry out the construction work. Thank you to Steve Blaylock the designer of the ‘Tree of Life’ (Steve created the Blue Peter ship that sits in front of the BBC Studios in Salford). The Friends Garden Working Party comprises Carolyn Rothwell, the hospital’s volunteer gardener, Dr Albert Day, Andy Wilkinson, Hayley Day, Trevor Chapman, the late Janet Chapman and Dr Sarah Marsh, Clinical lead for the Organ and Tissue Donation Committee who contributed to the sculpture and signage. We hope the Friends Garden will be re-opened in April 2026.
The following are financial commitments made for future projects.
-
‘Friends Garden’ refurbishment £25,000
-
• Committed for purchasing equipment in 2026 £100,000
Objectives for 2026
Our objectives for 2026:
-
To provide further equipment and facilities for the local NHS Healthcare and local outreach services
-
To recruit Trustees to the management committee with the skills needed by the charity
-
To recruit volunteers to increase the fundraising activity and involve more businesses and organisations
-
To further increase the sum raised through fundraising
Public benefit
The trustees confirm that they have complied with the duty in the Charities Act 2006 to have due regard to the Charity Commission’s general guidance on public benefit, “Charities and Public Benefit”.
Financial review
The surplus for the year was £22,161 (2024 – deficit £9,444). The balance of funds at the end of the year was £104,404 and these reserves are considered adequate for our purposes and our plans for the year ahead.
The trustees' annual report was approved on 9 March 2026 and signed on behalf of the board of trustees by:

Independent Examiner’s Report to the Trustees of Friends of Harrogate Hospital
Year ended 31 December 2025
I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the Charitable Incorporated Organisation for the year ended 31 December 2025.
Responsibilities and basis of report
As the charity’s trustees you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’).
I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
Independent examiner’s statement
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination which gives me cause to believe that, in any material respect:
-
the accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; or 2. the accounts did not accord with the accounting records; or
-
the accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair’ view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
