Charitable Incorporated Organisation
Charity information and Trustees' Annual Report
Year ended 31 December 2024
Introduction
The financial statements are for the year ended 31 December 2024.
Friends of Harrogate Hospital (FOHH) was originally set up in 1966 as The League of Friends of Harrogate Hospitals registered with the Charity Commission, Registration number 25376. We subsequently merged with Harrogate Hospital Community Charity (HHCC) in 2015. HHCC Charity Commission registration is 1050008.
In 2023 FOHH decided to form a separate Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) and operate independently from HHCC. The Friends has always been a volunteer led organisation and continues to be so. The CIO is registered with the Charity Commission, registration number 1203016. The CIO has no office and no paid staff - 95% of the money raised goes into purchasing equipment to improve the patient experience in our area.
The general economic climate has had an enormous impact on our fundraising activities following Covid in 2020 and the slow return to some form of normality.
During the period of this report the Friends donated money to purchase 10 pieces of equipment valued at £32,457.
Administration
The Friends of Harrogate Hospital, registered charity number 1203016, is registered at the home address of the Chair, John Fox, 26 Malden Road, Harrogate, HG1 4SF. The charity maintained a bank account in its name with Virgin Money.
The Trustees together with committee members form the management committee of the charity. The 3 defined Officers of the charity during the year were John Fox (Chair), Jeannette Wilson (Secretary) and Jane Leah (Treasurer). The Management Committee met 6 times during the year.
The list of Trustees and members of the management committee are detailed on page 1.
Structure, governance and management
The charity is governed by a Constitution approved on 21 February 2023. It is not considered to be in need of further revision at this time.
The CIO successfully recruited new Trustees during this period and actively seeks new Trustees and volunteers at every opportunity, including at fundraising events and all other profile-raising publicity.
Risk management
The trustees have a duty to identify and review the risks to which the charity is exposed and to ensure appropriate controls are in place to provide reasonable assurance against fraud and error. We have made substantial progress during the year.
Objects
The objects of the charity are contained in the Constitution. The current objects of the CIO are:
-
The relief of sickness and the preservation of health among people residing permanently or temporarily in and around Harrogate, North Yorkshire.
-
To assist in the treatment and care of persons suffering from mental or physical illness of any description, or in need of rehabilitation because of such illnesses, by the provision of equipment, facilities and services ancillary to those provided by statutory authorities in and around Harrogate, North Yorkshire.

Fundraising
Despite the poor economic climate the Friends have continued to be able to support Harrogate Hospital through generous donations from local businesses and individuals. The Friends launched Enterprise Friends, an initiative to encourage local business and organisations to support the work of the Friends.
We have organised fundraising events and continued to be involved with community events. Harrogate Harmony, a local choir, raised £1,000 at their Charity Concert. Our ‘Afternoon with Gervase Phinn’ at the Harrogate Theatre and ‘Afternoon Tea with Friends’ with Harry Satloka, Harrogate Free Walking Tours, as our Guest speaker at the Harrogate Club, were a great success. Harrogate Rugby Club held its Beer Festival in July and chose FOHH as its charity. EnviroVent staff held a staff day of events to support the work of FOHH. We have increased the number of collection boxes around our area from 4 to 27. The boxes help to raise our profile whilst generating small amounts of cash. During the period we have noticed a continued shift away from cash to card.

Independent Examiner’s Report to the Trustees of Friends of Harrogate Hospital
Year ended 31 December 2024
I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the Charitable Incorporated Organisation for the year ended 31 December 2024.
Responsibilities and basis of report
As the charity’s trustees you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’).
I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
Independent examiner’s statement
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination which gives me cause to believe that, in any material respect:
-
the accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; or
-
the accounts did not accord with the accounting records; or
-
the accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair’ view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
