Trustees’ Annual Report for the period

From 26[th] April 2023 To 31[st] March 2024

Charity name: MEF2C Foundation

Charity registration number: 1202843

Objectives and Activities

The MEF2C Foundation was formed for the public benefit, to advance and relieve the needs of people with MEF2C gene associated conditions by funding research for medical therapies for the treatment of said gene associated conditions provided that the useful results of such research are disseminated to the public at large and the provision of grants for therapies, equipment or sensory activities that will improve quality of life.

During the stated period, the MEF2C foundation signed a contract with the Medical University of South Carolina to act as guarantor for a project, Pathways to Hope, that committed a lab and team to researching three possible treatment pathways to relieve, or possibly even reverse the impact of MEF2C Haploinsufficiency Syndrome on impacted patients. The total cost of the project is $500,000. The MEF2C Foundation will ultimately pay $163,696 towards the total cost, with the remainder having been supported by private donors directly to the university.

The trustees of the MEF2C foundation have complied with their duty to have due regard to the Charity Commission’s public benefit guidance when exercising any powers or duties to which the guidance is relevant,

Achievements and Performance

The MEF2C Foundation had a very successful first year due to the commitment and enthusiasm of the MEF2C supporters community, securing £269,587.90 in donations to support our missions of improving the quality of life for those impacted by MEF2C gene associated conditions. These donation enabled the support of the “Pathways to Hope” program in collaboration with the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). This project has already identified a promising candidate to progress to the next stage of development of a therapeutic. The outcome of the project, irrespective of successful treatment candidate, will be published and further understanding of MEF2C Haploinsufficiency Syndrome and new treatment possibilities in the Global research community.

Another condition of funding the project was to keep MEF2C impacted families updated with progress and two webinars have been delivered to Members of the MEF2C (MHS) parent support & chat group, a global group that represents a

growing population of MEF2C impacted patients. Transparency and communication with the patient population is of significant importance to Trustees of the MEF2C foundation and will continue to form a key component of any project that the charity supports in the future.

Financial Review

The MEF2C Foundation has had a successful first year, raising £270,743.96 through a combination of donations (£269,587.90) and product sales (£1,156.06). Running costs for the charity have been minimal at £3,842.93 and costs of goods sold of £1,026.91. Having acted as guarantor for the “Pathways to Hope” program with the Medical University of South Carolina, there was a liability of $163,696 (£129,476) remaining at the end of the financial year with sufficient cash within the charity to fulfil that obligation as it falls due during summer 2024. Closing profit of £136,398.12 leaves the Charity well positioned to start the new Financial year with funds available to support further projects to support the Charity’s stated purpose, the relieve the needs of those living with MEF2C associated conditions .

Due to limited running costs and the Trustees commitment to have sufficient funds in place to commit to further projects, we are confident that the Charity will continue as a Going Concern.

Structure, Governance and Management

The MEF2C foundation was established on 26[th] April 2023 as a CIO.

The Charity is governed by a Constitution and a Research Grant Framework that governs how Trustees assess any potential Research Grant before unanimously agreeing to commit Charity funds in support of said Grant.

The current Board of Trustees are the 5 Founding Members. A unanimous vote would be required from existing Trustees to allow appointment of a new Trustee. Any new Trustee appointed would be selected on the basis that they have requisite skills, knowledge and experience needed for the effective administration of the CIO (MEF2C Foundation).

The MEF2C Foundation has and will continue to partner sister Charities in other jurisdictions to ensure efficient use of resources and ensure a Global Solution to relieving the need of patients with MEF2C Associated Conditions. Any partnership is undertaken with the guiding principles of the MEF2C Foundation in place and does not impact upon the ability for MEF2C Foundation to act independently.
