## **Charity info:**

The Pachamama Project CIO

Charity number: 1202834

104 Vicarage Lane, Great Baddow, Chelmsford, CM2 8JD

Trustees:

Chair: Heidi Lambert

Other trustees:

Helen Heard, Ruth Smith, Alice Corrigan, Joy Coisnard

## **Purpose of The Pachamama Project CIO:**

The prevention or relief of poverty globally by providing grants, items, services and reusable sanitary products to individuals in need and/or charities, or other organisations working to prevent or relieve poverty.

## **Structure:**

1 part-time employee, CEO Ella Lambert

- 5 trustees

The trustees were recruited on the basis of involvement in the project (when a CIC), knowledge of the sector and our aims and objectives and people with the time, expertise and experience to support the project. The trustees have been reappointed for 2025-26.

1

**Activities and objectives 24-25:**

## **Performance highlights and public benefit:**

•In the period 2024-2025, 54,908 reusable sanitary pads have been sent to Afghanistan, Lebanon, South Sudan, Uganda, the US and here in the UK, taking 6,864 beneficiaries out of period poverty for the next five years.

•Pass It On Trust, one of our partners in Uganda, is now reporting zero school absenteeism by our school girl beneficiaries due to their periods.

•New partner in Uganda: Successful trial followed by delivery of 12,000 pads and a report showing 98% improvement in school attendance, following pad distribution.

•2,500 volunteers worldwide: Testimonials evidence what we understood, anecdotally, that being part of the Pachamama volunteer community provides many benefits, including to mental health and allows people with long-term health issues to feel a full part of the project, as it is a no-commitment volunteering activity that can be done from home and in their own time.

• The Chelmsford-based integration sewing group meets once a week, with asylum-seekers meeting to make pads with local volunteers: a social activity which includes learning new skills, English language practice and local integration. Locals provided valuable support to the asylum seeker members of the club during the race riots in the summer of 2024.

•Period poverty committee in Lebanon: This committee was extremely impactful during the recent conflict, enabling us to respond to the emergency menstrual needs of the displaced population, providing pads and water tanks to enable the management of the washable pads.

## **Partner update:**

**Afghanistan** : We supplied 200 pads to the organisation, Forgotten Women, who were to attempt to get the pads into Afghanistan.

**Lebanon** – During the recent conflict, we ran an emergency fundraiser which funded distributions of disposable pads in hygiene kits, providing basic supplies to women, girls and people who menstruate sheltering in schools, parks and homes in 14 areas in west and central Bekaa. It was then decided that, by collaborating with the NGO, Jigsaw, to provide water tanks, we could actually provide our Pacha Pads, providing a longer-term solution. This was a good example of how we collaborate with other NGOs in Lebanon to tackle period poverty in both the refugee and local populations. We continue to work closely with The Free Shop Lebanon for distributions and storage of our pads. Our local volunteer, Mariam, handles our distributions and menstrual health workshops.

2

**Container:** There were well over 30 people involved, local to HQ, in collecting, sorting, packing and loading a 40ft container that left The Meadows Shopping Centre in Chelmsford on the 12th November 2024. Hundreds of people contributed with donations and businesses and schools around Essex supported us with sorting space, storage and collections.

We collected a total of 75,000 items of pads, clothing, shoes and blankets – including a pallet and a half of hijabs and abayas, donated by Muslim communities in Chelmsford, Birmingham and Bolton. We sent 34,372 Pacha Pads and 4,300 drawstring bags.

The donated items will help 8,000 people over the next six months and the pads will support another 4,000 people out of period poverty for at least the next five years. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cpdnl57w8qlo

**South Sudan** : 432 pads were sent to the NGO, SHOFOH for a trial.

**Uganda:** Following incredible feedback from our trial with Kigezi high school in Uganda, where 98% of students saw an increase in their attendance, we sent a further 18,000 pads on a large shipment to Uganda to Kigezi High School and to the Pass It On Trust community in Kampala.

We sent an initial trial to the organisation Rwenzori Women for Health and are now sending about 400 pads per month via St Marys Church, local to HQ, which has been supporting this community for 30 years. Feedback is excellent, both in terms of keeping girls in school and in supporting women with significant health challenges.

**UK:** We sent 1,200 pads to the charity, Global Relief Trust (GRT) for a UK-based trial with food banks and other NGOs.

**USA: US:** To date, 6240 pads have been made and distributed in the US and we are hugely grateful to all our US Pachamamas and our Pachamama ambassador, Joy, who makes it all possible. Ella and Heidi met the team at Food Justice DMV during their trip to Washington DC for the .Org awards and held a small focus group with some of the beneficiaries. Feedback was excellent and there is huge demand for our pads.

## **Awards**

## **The .ORG Global Impact Awards**

Back in October 2024, Ella was a finalist in the “Rising Star” category at the Global Impact Awards run by .ORG. Ella and Heidi attended the awards ceremony in Washington DC. It was an incredibly positive and heart-warming experience, in the company of nominees and winners from all over the world doing the most amazing things. Ella did not win but we were awarded a prize of $2,500.

## **The Diana Award**

In December 2024, Ella was honoured to receive the Diana Award – which she accepted on behalf of everyone. It was great to receive recognition for our work on such a stigmatised and often over-looked issue. The Diana Award was established in memory of Diana, Princess of Wales, and given out by the charity with the support of both her sons, HRH The Prince of Wales and Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex. The award comes with networking and mentoring opportunities and a valuable badge of credibility that will certainly open doors.

## **Sunday Times young person of influence**

In April 2025, Ella was named on the Sunday Times young power list. - - - - - https://www.thetimes.com/uk/young power list/article/most powerful people under-30-2025-r7lc2fncp

**Chelmsford integration sewing group, UK** –Trustees, Ruth and Helen have been running a sewing group for Chelmsford-based asylum-seekers on Tuesday afternoons to make and prep pads – as a pilot. We have applied for National Lottery community funding and hope to be able to develop this group and run it for at least a year. This is a valuable opportunity for the women to socialise, meet locals, practice their English, develop new skills and build their self-esteem – as well as to add to Pachamama stocks to support our wider beneficiaries. We have so far provided 100 kits for all the current Chelmsford-based asylumseekers in need of sanitary pads. During the race riots of summer 2024, the local members of the club provided valuable moral and practical support to the asylum-seeker members.

## **Speaking opportunities**

In 2024, Ella was on the panel of a prestigious Global Citizen event on the intersection between girls' health and education in Parliament in London – an event hosted by Helen Grant MP, Former Prime Minister's Special Envoy for Girls' Education and co-founder of Global Citizen Michael Sheldrick. The keynote speaker was the Rt Hon Patricia Scotland KC, Secretary-General of the

Commonwealth and Ella was on a panel moderated by the former Prime Minister of Norway, Erna Solberg. The other panellists were Thoko Elphick-Pooley, Exec Director, Uniting to Combat NTDs and Adrian Dongus, from the Sanitary & Hygiene Fund. This shows that we are starting to have an important impact in terms of raising the profile of period poverty as a barrier to education and gender equality.

Among others, Ella also spoke at Bristol Women's Voice International Women's day event in March, Plan International UK’s Inspiring Youth Action Plan panel in London in July 2024 and Public Interest Registry X Community Boost's event: “Champion Your Cause: Maximizing Impact Through Events” in August 2024.

## **Finances:**

Our turnover was £40,004, made up of a £20,000 grant from the Dalia & Ramzi Foundation towards our work in Lebanon, and other donations from volunteer fundraisers, donations via our GoFundMe page, and Easyfundraising.

4

We started paying the CEO a part-time salary in August 2023. Ella is working part-time salaried and part-time voluntarily until the charity can afford an appropriate full-time salary.

No debts; no payments to trustees.

Financial reserves agreed.

## **Volunteers:**

We have 2,500 volunteers signed up. Some are more active than others and an objective for next year will be to do more outreach to increase the active volunteer base, to boost stocks.

## **Outreach**

## **Internal:**

Two newsletters were sent to volunteers with project updates. https://thepachamamaprojec.wixsite.com/website

## **INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 APRIL 2025**

I report on the accounts of The Pachamama Project CIO for the year ended 30 April 2025 which are set out on pages 3 to 7.

## **Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner**

The Charity’s Trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The Charity’s Trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year (under section 144 (2) of the Charities Act 2011 (The Act) but that an independent examination is needed.

It is my responsibility to:

- Examine the accounts under section 145 of the Charities Act,

- To follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners (under section 145(5)(b) of the Charities Act, and

- To state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

## **Basis of independent examiner’s Statement**

My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the Charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes considerations of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.

## **Independent examiner’s statement**

In the course of my examination, no material matters have come to my attention which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect:

- the accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; or

- the accounts did not accord with the accounting records; or

- the accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of the accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a true and fair' view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

I have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
