## **The Twang Music Foundation Trustees Report**

The Trustees present their report and financial statements covering the period from 6th April 2024 to 5 April 2025. The Twang Music Foundation (TMF) was established in 2023 to advance the education in music of economically disadvantaged children and young people up to the age of 18 in schools in the borough of Bromley through providing free projects, music lessons, and instruments to beneficiaries.

## **STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT Governing Document**

TMF was established as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation with Associated Members, governed by its constitution dated 13 April 2023.

## **Appointment of Trustees**

The Trustees are appointed in accordance with the constitution and are listed on page 3. The minimum number of Trustees is three; the maximum number of trustees is 6. The method for appointment of trustees and the duration over which they hold office is described in the constitution.

## **OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES**

The objectives of the charity are to advance the education in music of economically disadvantaged children and young people up to the age of 18 in schools in the borough of Bromley. This is done by providing music lessons, choirs, music workshops and concert opportunities for children with a particular focus on reaching children who would not necessarily be able to afford music lessons

The Trustees seek to achieve those objectives by establishing projects in the Bromley Borough which provide access to music education for children and to seek to advance community integration and social

empowerment of those groups through combined concerts every term.

## **The Twang Music Foundation**

## **STATEMENT OF PUBLIC BENEFIT**

The Trustees have referred to the information contained in the Charity Commission’s general guidance on public benefit when reviewing the aims and objectives and in planning future activities. The Trustees believe that the activities carried out benefit the public by providing music opportunities to economically disadvantaged children in the Borough of Bromley.

## **ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE**

## **TMF Choir - A weekly choir at Alexandra Junior School (AJS).**

After initially consulting with the school, we were informed that the school’s year 5 and 6 classes had the highest proportion of economically disadvantaged children including those in receipt of a pupil premium grant. We were also informed that since the pandemic, there had been a decline in uptake amongst pupils for extra-curricular activities, even if they were free.

The trustees decided that a choir would be a good place to start as it does

not require any prior musical education or instruments and would encourage the sociability of children by singing together in a large group. Initially to gauge interest in the choir, we have delivered a series of 1 hour choir workshops in each classroom during which we taught the class a song in 2-parts.

After the workshops, children signed up for the weekly choir which is ongoing. The choir usually consists of 25 students across year 5 and 6.

They are taught new music which had multiple harmony parts. With only 3 30-minute rehearsals, and with most of the children never having sung in a choir before, they performed at the AJS Summer Fair on the 2 July 2023 and have appeared .

The performance was very successful and we received positive feedback from the school, students, and parents.

## **Free Guitar Classes at the Queen Adelaide Centre for Children**

In February 2025 we started some free ongoing group guitar classes for children in a community centre on local housing estate.

## **TMF Choir – A weekly choir at Alexandra Infant School**

Upojn the succes of our choir at Alexandra Junior School we started another choir at the Alexandra Infant School who performed in May 2025 as part of a spring concert.

## **The Twang Music Foundation**

September 2023-April 2024

At the start of the next term (September 2023) we decided to expand the choir to include year 4 students.

We delivered workshops to the year 4 classes to gain interest in the choir and we received a record number of sign-ups across all three-year groups. We ended up with 50 children in the choir.

TMF organised its first concert which was held on 2 December 2023. The choir performed songs they had learned throughout the term as well as Christmas songs such as ‘All I want for Christmas is You’ by Mariah Carey. The choir was joined by the AJS Choir Club and both choirs came together to sing some of the carols. The concert was well attended by parents and we received very positive feedback from both children and parents.

In January the choir started working towards a performance at the Children’s Concert as part of the Penge Festival of Music on the 20 April. This concert featured three local children’s choirs including the TMF Choir, AJS Choir Club and Churchfields School Choir.

The choir learnt music including ‘Say A Little Prayer’ by Aretha Franklin as well as ‘ _Revolting Children’_ from the musical ‘Matilda’, ‘ _Wellerman’_ and ‘ _Make Your Own Kind of Music’_ by the Mamas and Papas. Which would be performed alongside the other two choirs. Being able to perform with other local choirs helped build the musical ties in the local community. We plan to do more joint concerts in the future.

Performing in concerts helps to build confidence as a group as well as giving the children something to work towards. As a charity we ensure that there is at least one performance opportunity per term. After a year of success with the TMF Choir, the trustees have agreed to begin more projects in other schools within the locality. The focus is on teaching byear so that all children can participate in the projects.

## **April 2024-April 2025**

We continued to run the Choir at the Alexandra Junior School and they performed at the Penge Cogregational Church in December 2024.

## **FUNDRAISING**

As well as providing the primary source of income for the charity, TMF events aim to promote local talent.

In June 2023 we started ‘Jam in the Park.’ These Jams took place every month from June-September 2023 and were held at Homestead Café in Beckenham Place Park.

TMF continued to host “Jam in the Park” events from May 2024 to September 2024.

Anyone who wanted to play could get up and sing/play alongside a live band. These events were incredibly successful and resulted in a lot of interest in TMF as well as donations.

We also held a 2 recitals at Penge Congrgational Church and a number of music events at local pubs and halls in Penge. In the main we focused on promoting local young musicians.

We also started a community guitar worshop for adults at a local community centre, with a view to raise money for our peripatetic teaching programme.

## **FINANCIAL REVIEW**

Total income for the period was £24,801 consisting of £5,217 of income from fundraising events, £16,502 income from donations and £3,082 from the sale of donated instruments.

We are grateful to all supporters for their kindness and generosity.

Expenditure for the period was £19,790 and included teaching costs and fees for freelance assistants of the charity including events managing and project managing.

By 5 April 2024, we did not have an unrestricted fee reserves policy.

## **RISK REVIEW, FUNDS AND RESERVES POLICY**

The Trustees regularly review TMF’s policies.

The Trustees believe that these risks are minimised by holding regular meetings, the level of expertise on the board, monitoring of all freelance teachers and development of policies. The charity did not have an unrestricted fee reserves policy in the year 2024-2025 because the charity started with no prior funds.

The Trustees did make an unrestricted fee reserves policy in January 2025 to mitigate the key risks identified by the Trustees. The minimum reserve has been set at £2,000.

The key risks are:

- Precarious nature of funding streams

- Ability to be able to continue our project provision in schools

- The Trustees are satisfied that there are now sufficient procedures in place to mitigate these risks to an acceptable level.

## **The Twang Music Foundation TRUSTEES RESPONSIBILITIES**

Charity law requires the Trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial period, which give a true and fair view of the state of the charity and of its surplus or deficit for that period. In preparing those financial statements the Trustees have:

- selected suitable accounting policies and applied them consistently

- made judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent

- stated whether applicable accounting standards have been followed, subject

to any material

The Trustees are responsible for keeping records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the

charity and to enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the requirements of the Charity Commission. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence for taking steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.

Approved by the Trustees on 21st January 2026 and signed on their behalf by:

Philip Tindley Chair of Trustees.
