Annual Report and Accounts
The work of the charity is primarily undertaken by one trustee – Susan Smith – who although assisted by a small group of volunteer assistants, undertakes approximately 90% of the charity’s work as an (at least) fulltime unpaid job. Susan has been considering retiring from the Rescue for some time, and at the start of 2024 made the decision that she would not be able to continue devoting so much of her time and energy to it. Sue advised the other trustees that from 01 March 2024 she would retire from running the Rescue. Although stepping back from the significant workload of running a busy rescue, Sue will retain her interest in and care for local wildlife and hedgehogs in particular. None of the other trustees were in a position to commit the time required to take over the running of the rescue, nor were they able to identify anyone else who would be willing to do so. The trustees acknowledged the immense commitment and difference that Susan Smith has made over the many years that she has been the driving force for the care of and advocacy for hedgehogs and wildlife more generally in the local area.
The Rescue ceased to operate as such at the end of February 2024. Arrangements were made in advance for hedgehogs that were in the Rescue to be released if they were well enough, or to foster homes or other Rescues until they were. A small number of disabled hedgehogs remain with Susan Smith as they cannot be released into the wild. The Rescue’s closure was communicated via the Rescue’s social media, and the Rescue was removed from the lists of Rescues maintained by the British Hedgehog Preservation Society, local veterinary clinics and RSPCA. Susan will direct any callers to other appropriate local facilities that are able to look after ill or injured hedgehogs.
