## **Chair report 23-24**

Today we celebrate the beginning of our charity, and the fact that we have enabled many people to get out on a bike and enjoy the fresh air and great countryside in our area. The initial Poynton Pedals for All idea started in 2019 when we led some Breeze rides in the area around Poynton and one of our members, Elaine Sloane, thought how wonderful it would be for those in a wheelchair could also enjoy a spin along the Middlewood Way. From there, and with the support of the then Mayor, Sarah-Jane Gilmore, and Poynton Town council community officer, Sharon Duke, initially, we looked into the possibility of fundraising to purchase a vastly expensive wheelchair bike. We were one of SarahJane’s community groups that she fundraised for that year, which sadly then was cut short by the Covid Pandemic.

For several months we then started further fundraising to help us purchase the wheelchair bike and (also a Roam side by side bike). We also spend the further 18 months of fundraising, as well as visiting several local similar projects, and taking much advise from local cycling experts and the Cheshire East councillor responsible for Cycling and walking. Ian Tiernay, the Director from Wheels for All, and Neil Carmichael, a local cycling consultant and Beth Barrett from British Cycling all were instrumental in helping us set up the project. Liz and I improved our skills as ride leaders/ coach with British Cycling and Sue attended a Wheels for All leadership training day.

We are grateful to the numerous individuals, businesses, and groups who have contributed to help our project get off the ground, as well as funding from the national lottery and Cheshire East Spacehive. We were also Mayor Lee Podmore’s charity of the year after Sarah-Jane.

Simon Reeder from the Boar’s Head very kindly allowed us to rent out the old stable block there to house our bikes and set up our project. He made and paid for alterations to allow access for the bikes and security at the Boar’s Head. He continues to support us, fundraising and being very supportive of our project.

Once we managed to have the bikes delivered, it took several months to find a company who were willing to insure our project. Once successful, we then set about trialling our bikes. This involved Ed the ranger who had to widen the gate opposite the Boars Head, and improve the ramp to allow access of the bikes onto the Middlewood Way. He also has worked tirelessly to improve the surface of the Middlewood Way and access via radar gates as well as later improving the safety of the path round the Coppice Car Park. We also found that Martin from Velotech had much experience of servicing adapted bikes and he has kept them running well. Mike Crewdson also gave us much advice on marketing and fundraising which was invaluable.

Once we had involved several willing guinea pigs to try out the bikes, had thoroughly risk assessed the project, and also had written many policies to ensure we were compliant with other similar organisations, we set about launching our project in September 2022. This was an amazing event launched by Ruth and supported by Wheels for All, who brought along several different bikes for us to try. Manchester’s active transport commissioner Sarah Storey was unfortunately unable to attend but sent her deputy! Suzie Akers-Smith, who was a Cheshire East councillor at the timealso attended as well as several volunteers and committee. Martin from Velotech was also on hand to sort out any mechanical issues. It was a great success.

Throughout summer 2022 we had enlisted and trained several volunteers. We then ran a few sessions throughout October and the start of November when the weather turned and it was then too cold and wet to continue. We also set about writing our constitution and our charity application through the winter, ready to submit in March 2023. Our charity application was then approved very quickly, a week later.

2023 saw a reasonable February which meant that we were able to start running sessions. We also ran training sessions for our volunteers to refresh their skills particularly with loading and unloading the wheelchair bike. We included aspects of risk assessment and normal operating procedure, as well as safeguarding. Several of our volunteers have been DBS checked and we are looking into getting everyone checked in the coming year.

At the beginning of 2023 we were able to purchase two Pashley trikes and we also had one donated later on in the year. We were also able to purchase a Rock rider mountain bike and had several hybrid bikes donated. We now have a total of 5 two wheeled bikes, enabling family groups to ride together.

We ran forty sessions throughout 2023 and two at the beginning of 2024 until 31[st] March. Our most popular bike was undoubtedly the side by side bike. This bike enables an ablebodied rider to control the brakes and steering but also to enable the less able rider to rest when needed. It is a very sociable bike, allowing great chatting to go on alongside cycling. Our project is very weather dependent and several cold and wet Saturdays at the beginning of 2024 meant that the season had a slow start and took a while to get going. In 2023 the side by side bike was out thirty-nine times and the wheelchair bike out four times ( twice with Warwick Mews) The tandem was out seven times ( Peter with Andy as well as George on the guide riding) We had several trikes used in addition to the wheelchair and side by side bikes, when we were visited by a large group from Warwick Mews care home from Macclesfield. Our two wheeled bikes are also regularly used for accompanying family with our adapted bikes,

Our major highlight last April was the registration of our charity. This was amazing news and many thanks to Ruth for her very hard work in preparing us for the application. Being a charity has the advantage that we can apply for certain funds that are only open to charities and also raises our profile in the community.

Other highlights – In April 2023 we were part of the Vernon Building Society Community Stars fundraising which saw us receive a generous donation in September. We greatly appreciate their continued support. The Poynton Women’s Institute had made us their cause for the 22-23 year and I went along to receive a very generous cheque at one of their meetings also. As well as making a generous donation to our Charity, Dan Brownhill from Agency UK made a short promotional video which went out on the local social media. Alison Darby joined our Committee for a while and encouraged several local businesses to support us. Thanks to Acacia Homecare Stockport, Able2Physio, Slimming World, Stratford Solicitors and Alpha Mortgages. Wear to Work sponsored us by printing T-Shirts for our Poynton Show appearance- our competition to name that bike attracted attention and our bikes now proudly display their names! We were also selected by the local Co-op to receive one of their community fund grants, the first payment was made in February 2024.

Our website was launched in 2023 –Ruth set up the domain and thanks to Liz for producing an early version and to Jason Walker for developing and improving the website. He donated his time this year as a donation to our charity. After a few attempts to sort out booking systems, we managed to get a program called Simply Book which has been very good and helpful when booking.

Poynton Show was a great opportunity to showcase our side by side bike and we had several displays and a game to attract attention. Alison and I managed to cycle down and Helen with husband Rik showed their cycling skill by making it up the Anson Road to

head back to the Boar’s Head. We chatted to many local residents, several of whom have since been up to visit us.

Ed was busy on the Middlewood Way last summer and adjusted the gate at the end of the platform to make it radar key controlled. Later on, in the year he also took a group from Astra Zeneca to improve the path round the Coppice to make it safer. We have had continued fantastic support from Ed and the ranger team throughout and often meet them on the Middlewood Way.

The end of 2023 saw us run a Hotpot Supper night; this was partly as a fundraiser, but also was a celebration for the end of our first full year and an opportunity to celebrate the fantastic volunteers that we have, without whom we could not possibly run our Charity. The beginning of 2024 saw Martin from Velotech come and safety check all of the bikes so that they were in tip top condition for the season. We also had a rolling system to refresh the skills and the knowledge of our volunteers, particularly with loading and unloading the wheelchair bike. Sue H added to our safeguarding knowledge and qualified with level 2 and is our safeguarding lead.

I would like to thank all the amazing volunteers that we have - Andy (Shaw) in particular for his work in maintaining the bikes, as well as leading rides for us. Also, Liz ( often assisted by Andy W and Suzy) for leading sessions and managing the website and Simply Book, Fiona for her media and marketing input, and thanks to Vivienne for preparing the accounts. Thanks to Sue Taylor for keeping our committee in order and preparing minutes, agenda etc. I also appreciate continued advice from Neil Carmichael and Ian Tierney from Wheels for All as well as chats with Mike Crewdson on our marketing strategy. Thanks to all the volunteers for bearing with us and being willing to be adaptable when we have to cancel due to bad weather etc. and for being willing to step in when we get a last minute booking and need extra help.

Thanks for last year’s volunteers – Ruth who put in so much work to set our charity up, Shenelle, George and Stef who have been unable to continue this year, and for this year to Andy ,Liz, Fiona, Sue T, Jane H, Sam ,Kate, Debbie, Helen, Hilary, Gill, Sue and Pete, Clare, Pamela and Tony for helping us run sessions. ( I hope I haven’t missed anyone!) Without your help and encouragement, we would not have been able to make this project possible and enable all of the lovely families to get out and enjoying cycling in Poynton! We look forward to being able to expand our provision in the future to help more families which would need us also to expand our volunteer base, but we look forward to growing our project next year. .

We are always looking for anyone who could help with some of the admin tasks- eg sending emails out, organising volunteers and the rota etc and if anyone feels they can help in this way, please contact me.
