Activities and achievements
Overview
In this reporting period, we have moved forward with the Support Box Project and built on the success of our parent information sessions to launch our National Communication Workshop Project. For the latter, we have also successfully bid for our first grant which illustrates the recognised need for our work in this space. We also continue to strengthen partnerships with allied organisations and utilise our voice to provide advocacy for children with additional needs and their carers.
Activities in Current Reporting Period
● Support Box Project Update:
-
Since the last reporting period, The Support Box has entered its research and development phase with a physical box and its contents confirmed. A demonstration of the support box was shared with parents, carers and staff at the Marlow Opportunity Playgroup (MOP) in South Buckinghamshire to obtain feedback. All interviewed were very enthused by the support box. Every parent spoken to had spent time in hospital and agreed having the support box would bring ease to what is a difficult situation. They reported the items were thoughtful and would be useful - especially when many of the toys in hospital were not appropriate for children with additional needs. It was valuable to have this feedback firsthand, especially from parents of children with complex needs.
-
We have engaged with the Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust and have agreed to begin deploying this from Winter 2025.
-
Funds remain in reserve from the Ramadan 2023 fundraiser to spend on producing more boxes as we deploy these in more hospital settings in due course.
● Communication Workshop Project Launch:
-
Following our successful parent information sessions that were run in Autumn Winter 2022/2023 at MOP, YJF was successful in a project bid with Islamic Relief UK to roll out 3 workshops in different cities across the country and one online.
-
This project seeks to support parents and carers in communicating with their children who have additional needs and run with professional Speech and Language Therapists. By hosting these across the country, YJF seeks to expand its benefit and raise its profile with local communities and institutions.
-
Alongside the workshops we will also be running focus groups with attendees to further understand the needs of our target audience and help shape future work.
● Successful Recruitment
-
Costed within this the Communication Workshop Grant Bid was recruitment of a project officer to help trustees deliver this project. We are delighted to report the successful recruitment of a contractor through competitive public application.
-
They have brought along a wealth of experience in the charity sector with documented success in charity project management, as well as supporting charities’ institutional development in their infancy.
● Summary of Main Partnerships:
-
We participated in a community consultation with Muslim Mamas and Make-A-Wish UK, between November 2023-January 2024, to provide insight and advice around the barriers to engagement with services for under-represented communities, particularly families caring for children with complex needs.
-
Following this consultation, in April 2024, we provided further support to Make-A-Wish UK in aid of their volunteer training programme, specifically with regards to considerations when communicating with non-verbal children and their families.
-
During this reporting period, we have been involved in a piece of research with the Disabled Children’s Partnership on experiences of social care for families with disabled children from black and Asian minority ethnic groups. This has culminated in the release of the ‘Support not Suspicion’ report that was released in September 2024.
-
We have continued to foster relationships with partner organisations in the sector to increase understanding and collaboration, including the Makaton Charity, Newlife and local support groups such as Ana Huna, Send Salaam and Deenability.
