“Disabled people have the same fundamental rights as their fellow citizens of the same age; First & foremost, to enjoy a decent life, as normal and as full as possible” – United Nations resolution (No. 3447) Dec. 1975.

ANNUAL & FINANCIAL REPORT 1[st] NOVEMBER - OCTOBER 2024 31[st] 2025 OUR YEAR

WE ARE VERY PROUD TO BE CELEBRATING 60 YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY PROVIDING LEISURE ACTIVITIES FOR PEOPLE WITH A LEARNING DISABILITY.

The mayor of Harrow Cllr Anjana Patel is cutting the cake at one, of two, parties we organised to celebrate the amazing milestone in Tanglewood’s history

Chairman’s report

I can’t believe that when I first walked into that wooden hut, in the grounds of Tanglewood Hostel in Common Road Stanmore, on Monday 9[th] February 1970 that almost 56 years later, I would be celebrating the Diamond Jubilee of Tanglewood. As we entered our 60[th] year in November 2024 I was determined that this would be a very very special year. There can’t be many, if any, social clubs like ours that have celebrated their Diamond Jubilee.

Shortly before the year began I inherited a rather large amount of money from a dear family friend who had died aged 98. His will had stipulated that some named charities, mainly transport related but did include Tanglewood, should receive £5,000 each - with the remaining amount coming to me. As executor I carried out his wishes, in fact I doubled all the

mounts except Tanglewood’s. We used his donation to fund a new set of Tanglewood garments, all with our new Diamond Jubilee logo and in our new lighter shade of green, to all club members and helpers. By more luck and judgement, the total cost of this came to just over the £5,000 donation we had received.

I got to thinking about what I could do with my share of the estate – the idea of Tanglewood owning two mini buses had been discussed many times over the years. From the clubs opening night, up until 2012 it just wouldn’t be worth the expense, we were getting three mini buses free of charge from Harrow Council every week. When that invaluable service stopped it meant we had to we had to finance transporting our club members to and from club. We did receive grants from the Council to help pay those costs but, as you may recall, that stopped completely at the beginning of Covid. However, the question still remained “was it worth the expense of buying two vehicles and then having to tax and insurance them, just to use them once a week.” This was solved when I negotiated with Harrow Community Transport that Tanglewood would buy two mini buses, and they (HCT) would tax, insure and maintain them, and use them during the day, whilst we have free use of them on Mondays and the occasional weekend. This was the ideal solution so I donated enough money to buy two 17 seater minibus, with our logo’s on them and within a few weeks they were being put to good use by HCT and us.

Finding drivers for these minibuses is a different matter altogether. I’ve been driving buses and coaches since 1968 but would you believe it I can’t drive these because “I’m too old” what a cheek!

We have been very lucky – Dave and Suzanne Carlen (the latter being club member Julie Greenway’s sister) volunteered for driving and escorting duties and club helper Alan Hovell also went through the necessary training to become a driver of HCT operated vehicles. Alan Gee acts as an escort and Anita Langley has also recently taken up escorting duties. For various reasons we do have to sometimes use HCT drivers and for that, we do have to pay them but it is still worth it and I am proud to have been able to contribute financially in the purchase of them.

It goes without saying that the highlight of the year was our Diamond Jubilee celebrations. I decided to have two events, one on the Saturday then another two days later just for club members. (I did a similar thing for our Golden Jubilee). The Saturday event was a buffet dance with a fantastic Beach Boys tribute band, pictured left, providing the entertainment. It was an amazing event attended by 100 people and the band were amazing.

The lovely Lianne from Harrow Borough did all the food for us at both events which was quite an achievement.

Lianne is pictured, left, receiving a much deserved bunch of flowers.

Two days later and we had a party at club – The Mayor of Harrow was there and entertainment was by our favourite “girl” Suze. Both the mayor and Suze are pictured right. Once again it was a great night – worthy of a Diamond Jubilee event.

So yes, it was a great year but it was not all celebrations – we lost some very good friends. Former club helper Christina passed away in January and just four months later, club helper Vic also left us – both died far far too young and will be sadly missed. Anita’s father passed away in June and we lost club member Sandra Burst in September.

The excitement of our Diamond celebrations were still fresh in our memory when we found out that Harrow Borough F.C. are in the process of trying to sell their ground, including all the premises and of course our club room. This would mean that for the third time in our history, Tanglewood would be homeless. It could be years before this happens –

getting planning permission to build houses on the site, and therefore changing the use of the land would be far from easy. However, local and national governments are trying to fast-track sites available for building much-needed homes so it could happen. What would we do? Watch this space!!! On the following page I will take a chronological look back over our 60[th] year, and on page 5 my usual look at our attendances records both past and present and our finances are on pages 6 & 7

NOVEMBER 2024 - We held our first Wii™ bowling game competition since 2019 and in the final Paul Havard beat Kevin Sweeney. Paul also got the highest score of the tournament = 237

DECEMBER 2024 - I announced that every club member would receive a complete set of Tanglewood garments with our new Logo and colour -= Tee shirt, Polo shirt, Sweat shirt, rain coat and baseball cap = £80 worth of clothing all Free thanks to a donation from the estate of Fred Ivey RIP. JANUARY – We mourned the loss of our much-loved former club helper Christina.

FEBRUARY – Our Strictly Tanglewood Dancing event was won by Debbie Brice & Paul Havard who scored a perfect 40pts. Tanglewood buy’s it’s first ever Mini Bus – not one, but two

APRIL – We held a cockney sing-a-long night featuring Tom Carradine. (see picture below)

MAY - We were all shocked when the news broke about Vic Sanders passing away after being a club helper of over 30 years. Our annual football prediction competition was won by someone at Harrow Borough, Nick Ringham, who won it back in 2012

JUNE – We ran a small outing to the “Lost Jungle” crazy golf centre near Edgware. (Hopefully the first of many small outings now we have our own minibuses). There was a shock result in the Pool final when the defending champion 14-times a previous champion, Kevin Sweeney, lost to Chris Gridley.

JULY – Our main summer outing was to Woburn Animal Safari. (we last went there 41 years ago!)

AUGUST – Another Wii™ bowling game final (the 2025 tournament) took place and it delivered another shock result – Scott Irons was the clear favourite, he had scored a maximum 300 earlier in the competition but, despite taking a 2-0 lead, he lost the match to an exuberant Syed Amin. Syed is pictured receiving his winners shield from the lovely Maureen Davis. (The shield is named in memory of her son and former club member Christopher)

SEPTEMBER – Club member Sandra Burst passed away aged 82. OCTOBER – Our Glorious Diamond Jubilee. It did cost almost £7,000 to put on but we did receive £1,000 in donations and took £770 selling tickets

Below - The Tom Carradine St Georges day event in April which was great success especially as it was the 80[th] Anniversary of VE day (You will be pleased to know that we have booked Tom to come along to club on February 23[rd] as we are celebrating someone’s special birthday)

A T T E N D A N C E

The last club of our Diamond Jubilee year, 27[th] October, was our 2,579[th] club night. However, accurate records of who actually attended club only got back as far as our 809[th] club night (14[th] April 1980), so the maximum clubs any club member could have attended since that date is 1,879. Below, left, is a top 20 club members who have attended the most clubs (since 1980 or when they started). On the right is the percentage attendance. (To qualify for this list you must have been able to attend at least 100 club nights) - ENJOY

NOTES ON INCOME & EXPENDITURE

*= This donation was specifically to finance the purchase of our very own Minibuses’ – two of them – as explained elsewhere in this report.

No. 2 account Leo Weir £250.00 John Hill £125.00 Peter Brown £62.50 £437.50

**= These donations were specifically for our Diamond Jubilee events. Expenditure was always going to be high during this very special year. However, the expenditure on the minibuses was financed by donation and even the almost £7,000 we spent on our Diamond Jubilee events and that includes the £3,815.33 spent on momento’s

was partly offset by £2,300 in donations and £770 taken on the night.

So tasking those two facts into account our overall turn-over was about the same as in previous years.

Our accurate financial records go back over 50 years – to 1974 – looking at those records the total amount of donations we have ever received doubled in the last 12 months from £93,000 to almost 202,000 (excluding Harrow Council grants). Income from the 100 club was down on last year because we have 3 unallocated numbers. Our total income since 1974 now stands at £759,615.55

Our expenditure on parties was £9,622.86 (the highest since 2015) – that is roughly £253 per club member (£33 more than the subs paid by club members who attended all 44 club nights.) Our transport expenditure, £1,712.40 was the lowest since 2012 (the year we had to start financing our transport). Our expenditure on rent, since we had to finance it in 2009, = £97,200. It shows as £5,400 in this years balance sheet because we were late paying the final quarter and that will appear in the 2025/26 balance. Our total expenditure since 1974 comes to £742,601.17
