## **PROTECTED PAWS ANIMAL RESCUE** ## **REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES** ## **FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31[ST] DECEMBER 2024** The Trustees present their report and the financial statements for the year ended 31[st] December 2024. ## **PRINCIPAL ACTIVITY** The principal activity of the Charity for the year ended 31[st] December 2024 is the rescue, care, rehabilitation and rehoming of sick, abandoned or unwanted animals. ## **REVIEW OF THE BUSINESS** Protected Paws Animal Rescue obtained Charitable status on 17 March 2023. The financial statements cover the first full calendar year of operations to 31 December 2024. During the year, the Charity has rescued over 800 animals (predominately cats with foxes, dogs and other animals on an adhoc basis), and has successfully rehomed over 600 animals. The Charity operates purely on a voluntary basis and there are no paid employees or staff. It has 2 main sources of income, adoption fees and donations. The Charity relies on a network of foster homes whilst the animals are under the Charities care. The Charity did not own or lease any property during the period ended 31 December 2024. There has been a substantial increase in medical expenses incurred by the Charity. This is a result of the Charity taking on more challenging cases where animals required urgent care and were at risk of euthanasia, either by the owners or by other rescues. In addition, we also provided all medical/veterinary treatment for sick or injured animals, and maintenance costs for the animals in foster care, as well as vaccinations, micro chipping, flea/worming treatments and neutering prior to rehoming for all animals that were in our care. The Charity also had 19 end of life animals in foster homes as at 31 December 2024, that required extensive medical care and were unsuitable for adoption. In addition, the Charity has started to help colony cats and has actively trapped, neutered and released feral cats to safer environments, usually in farms where they can enjoy the freedom of outdoors yet have food and shelter away from an urban environment and at risk of road traffic incidents. Transportation costs are mainly for Ubers that were taken to rescue abandoned/sick animals and then to the Charity or Veterinary Practices where they could get immediate care. Whilst all efforts are taken to request assistance from volunteers for transportation, frequently Ubers were required as the Charity had no other means of getting to the animal quickly and transporting them. Transportation costs have also increased as a result of fosters being more widespread across London and its surrounding areas. The Charity experienced a constant churn of fosters typically as a result of fosters adopting the animals in their care. The Charity also provided occasional transportation and ordered food for Vets that offered their time to the Charity on the weekends on a pro-bono basis, giving their time and experience to operate on the animals. Both expenses are included in Transportation or Subsistence costs within the financial statements. ACCOUNTING POLICIES** ## **Accounting convention** The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention and in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard for Smaller Entities (effective June 2002). Given the nature of the Charity, the accounts are prepared under a cash basis. With the exception of Veterinary costs, some of which are paid monthly, all expenditure is paid immediately when incurred. ## **Adoption Fees** Adoption fees are charged in accordance with the published rates on the adoption application forms found on the Charity’s website, and recognised on a cash basis. Where possible, adopters are encouraged to pay the adoption fee prior to collection. ## **Donations** Donations include Gift Aid received during the year of £21,298. Just Giving is the platform used for claiming gift aid and was where the Charity received the majority of its donations. Platform fees and payment processing fees charged by Just Giving for processing the Gift Aid to HMRC totalled £1,031 and £1,072 respectively, and these are included in Subscription and Platform fees in the Financial Statements. Other donations are received directly into the bank account or via Paypal and no Gift Aid is claimed on these donations. ## **Food, Medication and Supplies** This represents costs required to maintain the rescued animals in kennels or at foster homes. The Charity is responsible for all costs for the upkeep of the animals in foster homes, and supplies are often sent direct to the foster whilst the animals are in their care. Included in supplies are cost of acquiring cages and carriers. These are not shown as fixed assets as they are given to fosters and frequently damaged/lost so are written off at date of purchase. I report in respect of my examination of the Charity’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act. ## **Independent examiner’s statement** I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect: 1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the Trust as required by section 130 of the Act; or 2. the accounts do not accord with those records.
