Introduction
Peoplescape Theatre is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation with voting members other than its charity trustees. The object of the CIO is to advance the arts for the public benefit by the promotion of the art of drama and theatre.
The company was founded by Emily Capstick and Alison Hale in Manchester in 1996. In 2006 we began creating work in London as well. Our work is multisensory, accessible and enabling: creating playful and magical learning experiences. We often use puppets, props, storytelling and music in our performances and workshops.
Our projects aim to inspire imaginations and creativity through the telling of stories; empowering artists and audiences to explore their thoughts and feelings about the world in a safe environment. We want to recognise and promote the value of stories which often go unheard giving voice to histories which are not always in the history books.
We prioritise creative opportunities for people who may engage less with the arts such as children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities and those in areas of high economic deprivation. Our work with young people with SEND informs all of our practice in helping us to develop new ways to communicate.
We are registered as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation and submitted our first Charity Accounts in February 2025
In 2024-25 our work included; participatory performances and workshops of The Magic Porridge Pot and the Gingerbread Man at schools in Greater Manchester and London; the delivery of Speech Bubbles drama workshops; the second year of a teacher development project with Lewisham Education Arts Network (LEAN), Trinity Laban and local SEND schools and a collaboration with The Royal Engineers Museum in a new area of Medway, Kent.
In this period we worked with 11 partners, delivered 224 workshops with 2400 participants, 88 performances to 4512 children and adults, delivered training with 462 teachers and worked with 13 artists. Projects were funded by Arts Council England, National Lottery Project Grants, We Love Manchester, Manchester Guardian Society, and the Paul Hamlyn Foundation. We also planned, developed and secured funding for projects in 2025-26. Behind the scenes, we worked with our Trustees to review our policies and procedures, as well as putting together a funding application for core funding for the first time.
How we work
Peoplescape Theatre is a CIO (Registered Charity Number: 1202250). We are led by freelance Creative Directors Emily Capstick and Alison Hale, supported by three Trustees: Catherine O’Donnell, Joanna Rawlinson and Alistair Robinson.
Working with a brilliant team of freelance associate artists and creative practitioners, our strong relationships with partner organisations such as museums, schools & theatre companies are at the heart of our work. We nurture our relationships with artists who often work on multiple projects. We aim to build diverse teams who represent the children and young people with whom we work. We offer training and mentoring during projects in order to bring in skilled artists who may not have experience in certain settings for example in SEND schools. We also work with artists from other artforms in order to extend and share our Peoplescape practice.
The Creative Directors build relationships, make funding applications and currently lead all projects. In the next year, we hope to secure core funding enabling us to invest in our freelance team through CPD, networking and training opportunities.
Our Mission, Vision and Values
Peoplescape Theatre projects aim to:
-
Inspire people’s imaginations and creativity through story and drama
-
Provide exciting and accessible learning experiences for children and young people
-
Empower artists and children and young people to explore and communicate their thoughts and feelings about the world within a safe, creative environment
-
Recognise and promote the value of the stories which often go unheard and promote the value of stories which are not often in the history books
-
Prioritise creative opportunities for people who are often excluded from the arts such as children with special educational needs & disabilities, and those in areas of high economic deprivation.
We do this through:
-
Creating high quality participatory drama and theatre programmes in schools, museums, and other community settings
-
Developing our audiences' understanding of history and exploring relevance to their own lives
-
Undertaking reminiscence and intergenerational work whenever relevant
-
Working with highly skilled practitioners and offering opportunities for professional development
-
Collaborations with Schools, Museums, Theatres and and other groups who share our ideals and principles
-
Incorporating other art-forms to enhance drama/theatre performances and workshops; for example, puppet-making, multi-sensory props, music and song
-
Creating work that is accessible to those with and without SEND, and that is challenging for all
-
Creating projects specifically for young people with SEND, recognising how this work informs all of our practice in developing new ways to communicate
-
When relevant, regular consultation with teachers and/or project partners to ensure that the work supports the National Curriculum and children’s learning in schools
-
Create high quality CPDL for teachers and museum staff
-
Disseminating findings and evaluation with teachers, artists and other practitioners through training, presentations at conferences and articles for distribution online and in print
-
We recognise our environmental responsibility and the impact of all work, this will be assessed by a designated practitioner on each project and by the Creative Director for overall review.
Our Activities and Impact
Moving Stories
‘Moving Stories’ is an ambitious, large-scale project that integrates dance and drama to support communication, creativity, and personal agency among children with diverse and complex learning needs across six special schools. Combining innovative research with a dynamic model of continuing professional development, the project enriches the expertise of teachers and artists, demonstrating clear positive impact on pupil engagement, expression, and confidence. It enables children to develop their levels of awareness and engagement, communication skills and ability to have creative ideas and make creative choices.
The creative approach encourages both verbal and non-verbal expression, imaginative participation, and self-directed learning. Teachers report an expanded pedagogical toolkit and growing confidence, particularly in leading drama. Teaching Assistants also became more actively involved, contributing to stronger team cohesion and shared leadership in creative learning. Professional development was led by artists through a varied and responsive approach modelling mentoring, co-experimenting, and direct training enabling teachers to adapt practices to their own styles and curricula. A disabled artist acted as a critical friend to artists.
Moving Stories has created a strong legacy, enhanced pupil outcomes, enriched teaching practice, new resources, and a growing professional community. It offers a compelling model for embedding the arts in special education and calls for further dissemination and development.
“MS reignited ‘joy and fun in the classroom’ teachers found it ‘relaxed and empowering’ . It had a ‘huge impact’. The immersive world of MS is sensory, discursive, physical, aural and visual. There are moments of theatre, tension and magic. It encourages original thought. Like play, Moving Stories is fun, in the moment and open-ended”.
Extracts from the Moving Stories evaluation by Sally Manser, including comments from teachers
The whole project included 216 sessions with 1944 participants in Lewisham schools and 46 hours of training for 13 teachers and 8 artists and 6 CPD sessions for 300 teachers. A resource pack and film have been created about the project. It is a collaboration with Lewisham Education Arts Network, Trinity Laban.
Funded by the The Paul Hamlyn Teacher Development Fund
The Gingerbread Man
From October to December 2024, we delivered eight participatory performances of The Gingerbread Man for 100 children in Lewisham and Croydon. This was in response to requests from individual schools, mainstream primary (EYFS and KS1) and SEND schools.
The Gingerbread Man was originally developed in Manchester and has toured there twice. A new creative team have now shared the show in London during two consecutive autumn terms.
“We had ofsted in January and they were really impressed that we had arranged a show just for the children in our Early Years. They said they are often left out of things, so our example of The Gingerbread Man show was very well received! The children and staff also loved the show, of course, and we were able to tell the inspectors how you had added some little details from talking with the children (prior to them seeing the show) to make it more personal. Unfortunately, there is not a quote from the report they sent (the reports are very short!) but we were graded as 'outstanding' for Personal Development, and from the feedback they gave us verbally I know this experience helped with that grading!” Headteacher, Baring School
The project was funded by the schools
Connecting Voices
A collaboration with the Royal Engineers Museum Gillingham. Multi-sensory storytelling workshops and performance, co-created with young people attending SEND settings.
The project included; An artists training day in Peoplescape’s inclusive practice a training day for museum staff in disability awareness and hosting SEND groups, explorations of the museum with artists, teachers and museum staff to find inspiring ideas, objects and themes, 32 workshops in local SEND schools with 320 participants, design and creation of multi sensory props including an interactive 'bi-plane' 8 participatory performances for 92 participants at the museum of ‘The Sheep on the Tracks’, ‘Samuel Cody’s Incredible Flying Machine’ and ‘We’ll Meet Again"
“Peoplescape bring an exceptional level of dedication, creativity & expertise. Their ability to connect with and inspire SEND young people through tailored, inclusive drama techniques is truly remarkable, ensuring every participant feels seen, heard, & empowered in their journey. We look forward to continuing to work with them in the future and benefiting from their invaluable enthusiasm for projects.” Amber Coulstock, Deputy Curator Education REM
What an absolute beautiful and inspiring day! Both classes have had an absolute blast from start to finish. Such a privilege for us to receive this project - thank you for choosing us. The model just totally works and pupils felt so secure and invested in the story and also they each owned a piece of it. Thank you for being so inclusive of all their ideas and contributions. The plane really was a total wow moment, simply stunning! It just makes it all feel so very special having the brilliant props and the venue. It all felt real.
Chantal Cook, Head of Expressive Arts Riverside School
"I feel more confident talking in front of people, "It was fun to watch", "I feel confident being around people", "I feel more confident to talk to more people" Young People who took part in the project Funded by Arts Council England.
Speech Bubbles
The Speech Bubbles initiative uses story, play and drama with children in KS1 to develop their speaking, listening and attention skills while supporting their social and emotional development. It also enhances the skills of school staff to run creative group work. We offer Speech Bubbles to schools within the Manchester local authority area. Our project partner North West Drama offer the programme to schools in Salford, Stockport, Trafford and Tameside.
Speech Bubbles is currently taking place in 42 schools in London, Southeast England, Bristol, Cornwall and Greater Manchester, with over 800 children telling stories and acting them out every week. Launched by London Bubble Theatre in 2009, Peoplescape Theatre, North West Drama, M6 Theatre and Oldham Theatre Workshop have been working together to deliver Speech Bubbles across Greater Manchester since 2013.
We continued to work with one school in Wythenshawe this year. In addition to the training mentioned later in this report, we managed the book launch in Manchester of Adam Anand’s (Director of SB) book on the intervention. Our practitioners lead and participated in training on using SB in SEND settings, hosted by SB CIO in London. This is a possible area of development for Manchester SB.

The Magic Porridge Pot
In Greater Manchester, November - December 2024, we delivered 72 participatory performances of The Magic Porridge Pot in 20 primary schools and four special schools. Parents/carers were invited to come into school for 7 of the performances (in 3 schools). This is a total audience of approximately 4,320 including 200+ at a community performance to families as part of Longsight Winter Welcome held at the Pakistani Community Centre.
Six artists worked on the show, including a poet, Ruth Awolola who was commissioned to write some verse which she performed as part of the show. Three visual artists were involved and it was performed by two actor/facilitators.
The Magic Porridge Pot was originally funded and toured twice thanks to Arts Council England (Grants for the Arts) 2020 - 2021, in schools, during Covid lockdowns. We redeveloped the show to maintain relevance and in response to feedback such as more animals on the farm!
“ The children raved about the performance and as a staff team we enjoyed it too!
What surprised me was how engaged our pupils were, we have some SEND pupils who find it hard to sit still and engage however they really enjoyed the performance and were able to talk about it afterwards. I loved how the children were interacting with you and how you adapted to suit them on the day.”
St Matthew’s Primary, Edgeley
Funded by the schools
Conferences & training
We’ve delivered six whole school Moving Stories CPDL sessions for 300 teachers and teaching assistants.
We delivered six CPD sessions for 150 teachers on ‘Drama skills for good communication in the classroom’ for Speech Bubbles CIO.
We delivered supervision of practitioners with other Greater Manchester theatre companies and wrote guidance documents for SB CIO.
Future Plans & Development
During 2025-26, we hope to secure core funding which will enable us to invest in the longer term future of the charity and the skills of individual artists, managers and the collective team. We will continue to develop our networks, collaborating with existing and new partners and supporting freelance artists through work opportunities and training. We have multiple funding applications under consideration for projects in London/Kent and Manchester. While it continues to be highly competitive for these grants, we hope to secure funding for projects in both regions. We also have contingency plans if those applications are unsuccessful; for example, touring previously developed participatory performances in the autumn.
Funding has been awarded by Arts Council England (National Lottery Project Grants) for a new participatory performance ‘The Selfish Giant’ which will tour Greater Manchester primary and SEND schools (primary and secondary) during the autumn term of 2025. This project is in collaboration with five libraries.
Our policies are now available on our website.
We will celebrate the end of the Moving Stories project in October 2025 with a Symposium at Trinity Laban,
