## Introduction

Peoplescape Theatre is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation with voting members other than its charity trustees

The object of the CIO is to advance the arts for the public benefit by the promotion of the art of drama and theatre.

The company was founded by Emily Capstick and Alison Hale in Manchester in 1996. In 2006 we began creating work in London as well. Our work is multisensory, accessible and enabling: creating playful and magical learning experiences. We often use puppets, props, storytelling and music in our performances and workshops.

Our projects aim to inspire imaginations and creativity through the telling of stories; empowering artists and audiences to explore their thoughts and feelings about the world in a safe environment. We want to recognise and promote the value of stories which often go unheard giving voice to histories which are not always in the history books.

We prioritise creative opportunities for people who may engage less with the arts such as children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities and those in areas of high economic deprivation. Our work with young people with SEND informs all of our practice in helping us to develop new ways to communicate.

On 8 March 2023 we registered as a CIO to enable the company to further develop and grow. In 2023-24 our work included the conclusion of a two year project with Portland Basin Museum and SEND schools in Trafford; participatory performances and workshops of Jack and the Beanstalk and the Gingerbread Man at schools in Greater Manchester and London; the delivery of Speech Bubbles drama workshops; the conclusion of the two year Lewisham Migration Stories project and a SEND project with the Museum of London and a teacher development project with Lewisham Education Arts Network (LEAN), Trinity Laban and local SEND schools.

In this period we worked with 10 partners, delivered 150 workshops with 1674 participants, 83 performances to 4849 children and adults, delivered training with 42 teachers and worked with 22 artists. Projects were funded by Arts Council England, National Lottery Project Grants, Goldsmiths Foundation and the Paul Hamlyn Foundation. We also planned, developed and secured funding for projects in 2024-25. Behind the scenes we worked with our Trustees to develop our Constitution, policies and procedures that support the work of the company.

## How we work

Peoplescape Theatre is a CIO (Registered Charity Number: 1202250). We are led by freelance Creative Directors Emily Capstick and Alison Hale, supported by three Trustees: Catherine O’Donnell, Joanna Rawlinson and Alistair Robinson.

Working with a brilliant team of freelance associate artists and creative practitioners, our strong relationships with partner organisations such as museums, schools & theatre companies are at the heart of our work. We nurture our relationships with artists who often work on multiple projects. We aim to build diverse teams who represent the children and young people with whom we work. We offer training and mentoring during projects in order to bring in skilled artists who may not have experience in certain settings for example in SEND schools. We also work with artists from other artforms in order to extend and share our Peoplescape practice.

The Creative Directors build relationships and make funding applications and currently lead all projects. In the next year we are intending to apply for core funding to bring in additional people to the development and project management teams. In becoming a CIO, we have been supported by a team of advisors - some of whom have become trustees .

## Our Mission, Vision and Values

Peoplescape Theatre projects aim to:

- Inspire people’s imaginations and creativity through story and drama

- Provide exciting and accessible learning experiences for children and young people

- Empower artists and children and young people to explore and communicate their thoughts and feelings about the world within a safe, creative environment

- Recognise and promote the value of the stories which often go unheard and promote the value of stories which are not often in the history books

- Prioritise creative opportunities for people who are often excluded from the arts such as children with special educational needs & disabilities, and those in areas of high economic deprivation.

We do this through:

- Creating high quality participatory drama and theatre programmes in schools, museums, and other community settings

- Developing our audiences' understanding of history and exploring relevance to their own lives

- Undertaking reminiscence and intergenerational work whenever relevant

- Working with highly skilled practitioners and offering opportunities for professional development

- Collaborations with Schools, Museums, Theatres and and other groups who share our ideals and principles

- Incorporating other art-forms to enhance drama/theatre performances and workshops; for example, puppet-making, multi-sensory props, music and song

- Creating work that is accessible to those with and without SEND, and that is challenging for all

- Creating projects specifically for young people with SEND, recognising how this work informs all of our practice in developing new ways to communicate

- When relevant, regular consultation with teachers and/or project partners to ensure that the work supports the National Curriculum and children’s learning in schools

- Create high quality CPDL for teachers and museum staff

- Disseminating findings and evaluation with teachers, artists and other practitioners through training, presentations at conferences and articles for distribution online and in print

- We recognise our environmental responsibility and the impact of all work, this will be assessed by a designated practitioner on each project and by the Creative Director for overall review.

## Our Activities and Impact

## **Portland Basin Museum**

In April 2023 we concluded a two year project with Portland Basin Museum, funded by Arts Council England and the National Lottery Project Grants ‘Creativity & culture inside & Out’ (funding priority ‘Unlocking the Collection’). We worked with 12 groups of young people in three SEND schools in Trafford and the Learning and Community teams at Portland Basin Museum. We delivered drama workshops in the schools, which led to the development of tailored participation performances at Portland Basin Museum. We developed relationships with more SEND schools in Greater Manchester and shared skills across Peoplescape’s creative teams in London and Manchester. “Witnessing first hand the way that children can engage and be inspired through different techniques and styles is joyful and helps to elevate and expand our practice. Opportunities to reflect together on this is invaluable to our work as a company and impacts all of our work as freelancers.” Emily Capstick, freelance Project Lead (Manchester)

“The sensory elements of the story really made it engaging for the children, the singing and repetition made it easier for the children to recall their prior learning. There were so many brilliant bits; from children using the language taught, retaining the information previously given, retaining instructions from one week to the next about making felt, etc. It worked very well and was a great opportunity for the pupils to access drama workshops.” - Hawthorns School

”I know this project has deepened the connections between our museum & schools that took part in this project and seeing the classes and pupils/students visit our wonderful museum and see how focused each were whilst being involved in the performance at the museum is utterly priceless for us. We cannot thank Emily and Jen from Peoplescape Theatre enough for approaching our service with this two year project and we cannot wait to work with them again.” - Portland Basin Museum

## Funded by Arts Council England

## **Jack and the Beanstalk**

From October - December 2023 we delivered 61 participatory performances and 6 poetry workshops in a total of 22 schools in Manchester, Salford, Stockport and Trafford, and at The Winter Welcome, Community Celebration at Longsight Library. We continued to offer these high quality performance experiences to schools and families who frequently have fewer opportunities for arts engagement. The project was for children in EYFS, KS1, KS2 (lower) and young people with SEND. 3615 children and their adults experienced the performances and 210 children participated in poetry-devising workshops. The project was funded by Arts Council England and National Lottery Project Grants ‘Theatre By, With and For All’, schools contributed to the cost of workshops, and it was supported by Manchester Libraries and Manchester Metropolitan University.

“The children and all the staff really enjoyed it. Some of the least confident children were joining in with shouting, laughing and with the actions”. - St John Fisher and Thomas More Catholic Primary School, Wythenshawe

“We all loved the performance of Jack and the beanstalk. From the moment we entered the ‘theatre space’ to the fabulous ending, the children were mesmerised. Staff were astounded by how well all the children stayed engaged.” - Green End Primary School, Burnage

Funded by Arts Council England and Schools

## **Speech Bubbles**

The Speech Bubbles initiative uses story, play and drama with children in KS1 to develop their speaking, listening and attention skills while supporting their social and emotional development. It also enhances the skills of school staff to run creative group work. We offer Speech Bubbles to schools within the Manchester local authority area. Our project partner North West Drama offer the programme to schools in Salford, Stockport, Trafford and Tameside.

Speech Bubbles is currently taking place in 42 schools in London and Greater Manchester, with over 800 children telling stories and acting them out every week. Launched by London Bubble Theatre in 2009, Peoplescape Theatre, North West Drama, M6 Theatre and Oldham Theatre Workshop have been working together to deliver Speech Bubbles across Greater Manchester since 2013.

We continued to work with one school in Wythenshawe this year. They supported the development of CPD opportunities for teachers on ‘Drama Tools for Great Communication’ which will be offered across the UK in areas where Speech bubbles is delivered.

In this period we delivered 24 workshops for 22 participants.

## **Molly in the Docks**

In September 2022 - July 2023 we delivered the third year of a three-year project with the Museum of London and three SEND schools in London. We worked with 48 learning disabled young people aged 11-18, the Museum of London’s Learning Team, and 10 teachers in 3 SEND schools to develop a multi-sensory storytelling performance at the Museum of London Docklands for young people with SEND. Funded by the Goldsmiths Foundation, the project included a teachers focus group, workshops in schools to explore the theme and techniques, and professional performances in the museums for the young people.

“A particular child in my class who is normally really quiet, likes to watch rather than participate - he was screaming, he was shouting - all the positive experiences - he was actively participating rather than just observing - he wanted to be engaged in the whole session - he was totally immersed in the whole experience.” Riverside School, Petts Wood

“The skills that the children develop over the course of the workshops - anticipation, turn taking - working with new people that they’ve never seen before - when you build that up each week - they become familiar with you - they feel the story using the multi-sensory props, they love the songs, they love the rhythm and beats - rather than a normal story being read to them, they’re part of the story which makes the experience ten times better.” Willowdene School Greenwich

Funded by The Goldsmiths Foundation via Museum of London

## **The Gingerbread Man**

From October to December 2023 we delivered 28 participatory performances of The Gingerbread Man for 1065 children in Greenwich, Lewisham, Hackney and Haringay. This extended Peoplescape’s EYFS and KS1 work from Manchester to London. The project was funded by Arts Council England and National Lottery Project Grants ‘Theatre By, With and For All’, and schools contributed to the cost of performances.

“This fabulous performance, which included puppets & amazing comical effects also have visited 10 plus schools and have also visited Beecroft before. Everyone enjoyed the amazing performance and we hope for Peoplescape theatre to come back soon!” Students at Beecroft School. Lewisham

“Our children are very rarely given the opportunity to visit a theatre and see stage performances so this has really supported to build on their cultural capital. It is especially important for the younger children as taking them on educational visits to see performances can often present challenges (ie. distance and adult ratio) therefore having performances in school alleviates these pressures whilst giving children opportunities they otherwise may not get.” St Ann’s School, Haringay

Funded by Arts Council England and Schools

## **Moving Stories**

Moving Stories is a two year project working with all of the primary SEND schools and two resource bases in Lewisham from 2023-2025. Artists from Peoplescape Theatre and Trinity Laban are working together to explore how dance and drama for learning can be combined in SEND settings. They are working alongside teachers and their classes to develop new ways of exploring a variety of themes.

This new experimental practice is being planned by the teacher and artists together and trialed with the children. Children taking part in the project are developing their confidence and communication skills through dance and drama.

Practice is being shared at regular CPDL sessions where all artists and teachers working on the project come together to reflect on the work. Teachers are developing skills and confidence to deliver learning through dance and drama. This will lead to the development of new whole school approaches and arts based curriculum. Evaluation of the project will reflect on how this new practice can be embedded in whole school planning.

The project has reached 108 children 12 teachers and 8 artists this year.

Funded by the The Paul Hamlyn Teacher Development Fund

## **Lewisham Migration Stories**

In April 2023 we concluded a 2 year project with the Tackling Race Inequality group at Lewisham Council. The project reached 1500 children in 20 Lewisham Schools.

The project celebrated the diversity of Lewisham, explored the theme of migration and valued the stories of children and their families. We delivered 4 reminiscence workshops with Grandparents of children in Lewisham schools, 60 performances of ‘A Place for Me’ (inspired by the reminiscences) 160 workshops and 20 children’s performances. 40 teachers received a CPDL session with our drama practitioners to explore techniques used and explore the teaching of migration through drama based approaches.

Peplescape also took part in Lewisham Borough of Culture with a showcase of the work including a community performance of A Place for Me and three of the children's performance at The Migration Museum.

”Working with Peoplescape on the Migration Stories Project was an extremely empowering experience for our Year 6 children last year. They worked collaboratively to share their own and their families’ experiences through a highly-emotional performance. The project was completely inclusive – the cohort which took part had a very high number of children with Special Educational Needs, including some with EHCPs.” Baring School, Lewisham

"Peoplescape’s showcase day was expertly delivered and really enlivened our museum space. We would be thrilled to work with them again in the future. [the showcase] brought pupils and their parents to our space who might otherwise not come to the Migration Museum - PT are supporting us to better serve our local communities.." Migration Museum

Funded by Lewisham Council via Lewisham Learning

## **Conferences & training**

Peoplescape presented at:

Inspiring Hope and Ambition Drama-in-education conference in Stockport - November 2023 Ongoing CPDL SEND teacher training as part of Moving Stories throughout the year

## Future Plans & Development

In 2023-24 we developed partnerships, funding applications and project plans for activities that will take place in 2024-25. Funding has been secured for the following projects:

- participatory performances of The Magic Porridge Pot for schools in Greater Manchester, funded by We Love Manchester and Manchester Guardian Society, supported by Manchester Libraries and Bridging the Gap

- A Theatre and Museums project for young people aged 11-19 with SEND at the Royal Engineers Museum, Gillingham and schools in Kent, Medway and South London. Funded by Arts Council England, National Lottery Project Grants ‘Connecting Voices’ (funding priority ‘Unlocking the Collection’)

- Year 2 of Moving Stories project.

- Ongoing delivery of Speech Bubbles project.

In 2023/4 we developed 10 company policies alongside our CIO constitution, ‘Mission, Vision and Values’ and ‘Looking after everyone’ documents . During 2024/5, we’ll finalise all of the company policies and make them available on the Peoplescape Theatre website. We’ll pursue our ambition to secure core funding through attending funding surgeries with Lewisham Education Arts Network and strengthening our vision for the company. Core funding will enable us to support the future sustainability of the company. We will also explore opportunities for applying for larger grants which would enable us to plan further ahead with projects running over longer periods. We will do this through working with current and past project partners as well as developing new relationships.
