Objectives and Activities

Harrogate Vineyard Church was “planted” out of Leeds Vineyard in January 2012 and was established as an independent CIO in March 2023, to advance the Christian religion in accordance with its constitution.

The objects of the CIO are:

To advance the Christian religion for the public benefit in accordance with the Statement of Faith in the Schedule hereto attached in such parts of the United Kingdom and the world through:

fulfil its mission to the members of the Church, visitors to the Church and the local community

and the wider community;

Public Benefit Statement

In considering the activities, the Trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit.

The organisation's purposes primarily benefit the community in Harrogate, through showing love to the area in practical and generous ways which brings them together. Those who attend the church, the poor and lonely, and anyone who wishes to receive support, will be given the opportunity to know God through worship and prayer, which will, in turn, transform lives through decreasing loneliness, creating community, increasing peoples' connectedness and creating opportunities to explore and grow their faith and spirituality

Vision Statement:

God has called us to establish a vibrant, creative, biblically-based and growing church in Harrogate. A church where all are invited to discover Jesus and what it means to follow Him. An outward-looking community which will, in a creative and contemporary way, in the power of the Holy Spirit, worship God and communicate the good news of Jesus with compassion and generosity. We aim to make and equip disciples, raise up leaders, plant new churches and be a blessing to the wider church.

Our desire is to see lives changed through the power and presence of God; to see broken lives restored; to see those without hope given a reason for joy; to pray for and be actively involved in God’s justice for the poor. We believe God has something powerfully life-changing and relevant to say to all people. Our desire is to grow a church where people are welcome at any part of their journey; whether they are seekers, followers or just hanging out.

Our invitation is “Come as you are”.

Achievements and performance in the year

Our goals for 2023/24 were attained as follows:

We have gone through the process of moving all activity to our new CIO structure and now function independently from Wharfedale Vineyard Christian Fellowship (Leeds Vineyard).

We increased the number of people serving on the Vineyard Kids team, to match the increase in numbers of children & young people.

We provided robust training to Vineyard Kids leaders on safeguarding.

We developed the preaching team, giving opportunities to new people and provided resources & mentoring.

We returned to regular weekly services at St Aidan’s, made possible by the increase in congregation .

We introduced a bring & share lunch after the service into our programme to increase connection.

We invested in our growing multicultural, small group, based at Harrogate Hospital – including training opportunities, mentoring & attending Cause To Live For conference.

We upgraded our website & social media to facilitate greater engagement with the community & newcomers.

We have created leadership roles internally from existing leaders.

We have increased the number of non-churchgoing young people who are invited to the Youth Worship night – with opportunities to respond to evangelistic messages.

Financial Review

The activities of the charity for the year ending 30th April 2024 resulted in an income of £ 89,472 and expenditure of £60,304 this led to a surplus of £26,168 during the year.

At the year end the unrestricted funds held by the church were £25,109.

Reserve Policy

Harrogate Vineyard church holds a reserves policy that is reviewed annually. Alongside which, the level of reserves held by the church is monitored and managed regularly.

The current reserves policy states that the church aims to maintain a level of reserves that is sufficient to cover 3 months of operating expenses (£16,116). The level of reserves is defined as unrestricted funds that are available to be used for any purpose of Harrogate Vineyard Church. The reserves held at the end of the year ending 30th April 2024 were £25,109. The Trustees recognise that this is above the minimum level of reserves set out in the policy but, as the church is growing in numbers and income, the surplus is within reasonable parameters to accommodate increasing operating expenses. The Trustees will continue to monitor the reserve to ensure that funds are used appropriately.

Volunteers

The church makes significant use of volunteers to run its activities. This includes… children’s Sunday groups (Vineyard Kids), Youth group, small groups, setup, refreshments, worship, Reach Out events, discipleship, and affinity groups.

The church also relies on the financial donations of volunteers and other churches/trusts to further its aims.

Plans for the Future

Our main objectives for 2024/25 are:

We will continue to develop the preaching team, identify & deploy new speakers & shorter testimony opportunities – with a teaching focus on Discipleship, Spiritual Formation & Outreach.

We will focus on ensuring volunteers & leaders in all ministry areas are trained & confident in serving (including youth ministry training, safeguarding, food/hygiene, preaching, worship, outreach).

Amongst our outreach & community connection opportunities we will create a ‘Send Them A Meal’ team to provide care & pastoral connection both inside & outside church community.

Develop & plant new small groups, including a leadership essentials short course, identifying new leaders, and running a new Spiritual formations affinity group for those seeking to grow deeper in their faith.

We will grow the worship team, adding new members (especially from among our young people) and increasing the number of worship leaders.

We will be intentional about providing reach-out events & gatherings to provide places where we can invite friends & neighbours to create connections with church regulars, building community & friendship.

We will run baptism classes for prospective baptismal candidates, with the intention of having 1 or 2 baptism services for approx. 5 candidates.

We will recruit new members to the Monday Reflections team & aim to raise the profile of these valuable teaching & encouragement resources.

We plan to run a CAP Money coaching course based in Starbeck, training 2 coaches, aimed outwards into the community, supported & facilitated by church members.

We are seeking to build relationships with other community care & support organisations in Harrogate, to provide assistance & investment in terms of time, money and people resource.

Independent Examiners Report

I report to the trustees on my examination of the financial statements of Harrogate Vineyard Church ('the charity') for the year ended 30th April 2024.

Responsibilities and Basis of Report

As the trustees of the charity you are responsible for the preparation of the financial statements in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’).

I report in respect of my examination of the charity's financial statements carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.

Independent Examiner's Statement

I confirm that I am qualified to undertake the examination because I am a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), which is one of the listed bodies.

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

  1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the charity as required by section 130 of the Act; or

  2. the financial statements do not accord with those records; or

  3. the financial statements do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair' view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

Further explanation of the nature and purpose of each fund is included in the notes to the accounts.

Incoming Resources

All incoming resources are recognised once the charity has entitlement to the resources and the money has been paid.

Resources Expended
