Group Scout Leader’s AGM Report
Every year I start with I can’t believe another year gone but here we are again, as they say time flies when you’re having fun.
I am very pleased to say that our pizza oven is now up and running, all sections have had some great evenings using it. It’s an amazing activity and we can’t wait to see what we can cook next.
Rex, Tony and Terry (Our maintenance team) have been busy working hard to keep our ground in top shape ready for our section night for all our young members to enjoy. They have also been working hard on developing our new campfire area.
In August 2023 we had our group summer camp at Wilverley. We had over 75 young members attend from all sections. We had lots of fun and adventurous activities along with an amazing silent disco on the Saturday night. I would like to thank all the leaders and helpers for supporting a great camp.
In November all sections attended the Remembrance Day service at St Peter’s Church. We had a fantastic turn out and all our members look smart and did us proud.
We had our Christmas Fayre in December. The event was very well attended, we raised a record £1907. The Chairman’s Challenge was won by the Cub team with a whopping £347. We would like to thank all our parents and local community for coming along and supporting. A massive thanks to Kerry our chairman and her team for organising. Five of our young people took part in Roverang this year and the Group went to support them at the Saturday matinee. Well done to them all.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the adults that volunteer at the 13[th] . As a group we have no paid staff, the group is fully run by volunteers that work hard week in and out to offer our young members amazing not only section evenings but additional events and camps. With out them we wouldn’t have a group, so can I please ask you to remember to thank them for giving up their valuable time.

We held our group awards campfire in July, we had the District Commissioner and the District Cub and Beaver leads come along to present Chief Scout Acorn, Bronze, Silver and Gold awards. These are the highest award each of the sections can achieve. We are so pleased so many young members received them.
We have lots planned over the next 12 months, we have several camps and trips and are continuing to develop our grounds.

’ - Chairman s Report 2023 24
It has been another great year for Scouting at the 13[th] . The number of young people in each section remains high and this can only be attributed to the varied and fun activities provided by each of the section teams. I know you will join me in thanking all of the leaders for giving up their time for our young people, not only creating diverse programmes, but also helping to nurture skills for life and long-lasting friendships. In our “tech heavy” world it’s great to be outside and having fun!
I can never thank Mandy (Starfish) enough for all her work, support and dedication to our Group and beyond. Her strong leadership is definitely the key to our Group’s success. Thank you Starfish!
Our Group Trustees Board (previously known as the Executive Committee) continue the behind the scenes work to carry out the governance of the Group, whether it be good financial practice, or ensuring the HQ is in good working order and the equipment we need is available. Thank you to my fellow Trustees.
We have a small fundraising committee whose main job this year has been to support the Christmas Fayre. It is our main fundraiser each year and this time raised £1,907. The reason we are able to keep subs low is because of support at our Christmas Fayre etc. When the call goes out in the Autumn, please consider helping with the set-up before the day, or on a stall at the event. It doesn’t take a lot of time and it’s great fun.
Helping to keep our costs low, we have a Tuesday afternoon team (and Friday afternoons April to October). Rex (Neptune), Tony and now Terry, another grandparent from the Group, make up this team but if you know of someone who would enjoy helping with grass cutting and general maintenance of the site, please let us know. Please also help at our working party days, usually twice a year. Our maintenance team are fantastic, but I know some of you must have skills to help on these days. If you have specific practical skills, or just a willingness to help, let us know.
Our Group is now 65 years old and continues to go from strength to strength, offering more activities and developing our outside area. With this in mind, we will shortly be replacing our picnic benches under the shelter for sturdier ones. This has been made possible by grants from Tescos and the Richard Kirkman Trust.

It has been another 12 months of fun packed adventure for the Squirrels. It’s hard to believe that we celebrated 5 years of this section in February this year. It has been an amazing journey so far and the adventure continues.
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to our Squirrel team, the section is led by Starfish and supported by Coral, we have welcomed our newest leader Turtle who has joined the team and not forgetting our amazing young leaders Nemo and Mowgli. We do need another few helpers in this section, so if this if something you are interested in, please speak to Starfish.
The Squirrels have been working hard on their badges over the past 12 months and as part of this they have visited the library, gone on a hike and visited Sainsburys were they bought food for the local food back. They have built dens, fires, and bug hotels. They have cooked pizzas, done soft archery, soft axe throwing and much, much more. We have awarded 8 Acorn awards, which is the highest award a Squirrel can achieve, we are very proud of all our Squirrels.
In May the Squirrels had a sleepover at the scout hall. They did lots of fun activities including slack lines, tree shaking and rockets. After a day packed with adventure, we had a campfire followed by fish and chips and a movie. A great time was had by all.
In June we attended the first every Southampton City Squirrel fun day along with all the other dreys in our district. There were so many activities to do, including leaf bashing, bubbles, rockets and circus skills. It was a very hot day, so we all cooled down with some well earnt ice lollies.
On the 2[nd] of July we held our very first Squirrels afloat, we had 10 squirrels join us on the water. They had a fantastic time, and we would like to thank all the leaders that supported on the water for the day. It was a great success, and we hope to do again this year.
In July we had our annual group end of term campfire and awards evening. Well done to Annie who was awarded Squirrel of the Year.
In August, 7 of our Squirrels joined our other sections, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts at our group summer camp at Wilverley. They cooked bread twists, played frisbee golf, built dens in the woods, went on a hike and much more. It was a great camp, and I think everyone would agree the highlight was the silent disco on the Saturday evening.
In September we attended the County Squirrel fun day at Ferny Crofts. We joined with nearly 300 Squirrels from across the County; we came together for a day of adventure. There were so many activities available. We did the climbing wall, crazy golf, inflatables, go carts, crafts, open fire cooking and this were just a few to name. We look forward to attending the next one in 2024.
Our next biggest group event was Remembrance Day service at St Peter’s Church. The Squirrels attended along with all the other sections in the group. The Squirrels made a wreath in group in the week leading up to the service and then laid it on the day. They all looked very smart and were so well behaved, we were so proud of all of them.
In March 24 we attended the district cross country event at the sports centre. We had seven Squirrels enter and did such a great job they come 1[st] . We look forward to even more Squirrels entering in 2024.
Above is only a snapshot of what the Squirrel get up to, they have such an amazing, adventure and diverse program, but I would like to say none of this would be possible without the hard work and planning for the leaders and young leaders and all the support from our adult helpers.
We are extremely excited for the next 12 months as we have already planned in several camps and days out so our Squirrel adventures will continue.

This AGM greets us with another full, fun-packed year for the Beaver Section. We continue to grow in numbers, and definitely have a large, active colony!
Another busy year has been enjoyed by the Beaver section with more opportunities for badges and adventure.
Nights away have been completed with Wilverley for 2 nights and the Beaver Christmas sleepover. Wilverley was an action packed filled weekend with a theme of ‘I’m a Beaver, get me out of here’ pushing the Beavers with challenges including bug eating and survival skills. Another nights away opportunity occurred with the annual Beaver Christmas Sleepover, lots of crafting was involved and a Christmas feast cooked by Mumma Starfish! The nights away that the Beaver section have been able to offer would not be possible without Starfish. We now look forward to Summer Camp, Christmas Sleepover and District Camp 2025 for more nights away opportunities!
Our regular Thursday nights have been as busy as ever, we have completed our Navigation badge, Fitness, Communication, Craft and Emergency Aid stage 2 and Book Reader. We have enjoyed celebrating Chinese New Year, Easter and Mother’s Day as well as Star Wars day combined with the Kings Coronation (Big thanks to Lee Stewart aka Darth Vader for getting the Beavers to understand May the 4[th] !). Badges continue to be big part of our Beaver programme and we are looking forward to completing Paddle Sports and Time on Water in the coming weeks.
This year we have seen more Squirrels come up to the section and have also seen the last of the original Hedgehogs move on to Cubs; I cannot wait to see what adventures they continue to have through the sections.
Leadership wise I continue to be supported by Starfish, Pufferfish, Flounder and our young leader Dolphin and this year we have welcomed a new young leader, Dory, into the Beaver Team. We continue to be supported by parents some evenings when needed. As I said above there are some opportunities the Beavers have that would not be possible without the dedication of Starfish, for which myself and the Beaver section will always be grateful.
From a District point of view the Beavers have enjoyed Paultons Park again this year and we also attended the Pantomime at the Point with the District. We also had a team compete in the District Loggerheads competition. . Ideally the competition is for teams of 6 but a dreamteam of 3 represented the 13[th] and through skill and teamwork they were able to achieve 1[st] place!!! This is a huge achievement of which they should be immensely proud; I know we, as a leadership team could not be prouder; congratulations Jed, Benjamin and Rosalie!
As the year comes to an end, I yet again find myself looking forward to the next Scouting year. So many opportunities to be had and even more badges to be earned. Thanks to on-going support and opportunity provided by the group the Beavers will continue to thrive in 2024/2025.

It has been a great year with Cubs growing to 25 on roster. We have welcomed new Cubs from Beavers and in turn have seen many Cubs continue their journeys moving onto Scouts, including the first ‘Hedgehog’ moving through all 4 sections. We have enjoyed getting to know our young Pack and seeing them swap their blue jumpers for green. The adult leader team remains unchanged. Our young leader Clarke ‘Mowgli’ has continued to go from strength to strength and has been joined by Mateusz ‘Kaa’. They have developed good relationships with both leaders and cubs while leading on activities and games as well as taking registers.
Cubs had a great time at the 13[th] Summer Camp at Wilverley. It was fun staying in tents and cubs had the chance to show their moves at the silent disco while mixing with Squirrels, Beavers and Scouts.
Some cubs also had the opportunity to take part in the survival camp in September.
October and November were busy working on our DIY and Environmental Conservation badges and two nights of knife skills run by Doc as well as poppy making for Remembrance Day parade. The Cubs looked very smart at parade and represented the 13[th] at poppy selling the day before at Sainsburys Portswood in support of the Poppy Appeal.
The Cubs also enjoyed their Halloween party.
The Cubs have been involved in district events attending the carol service which returned to St James Church in Shirley in December.
Cubs attended the County cross country event in the Sports Centre, as well as the annual chess competition.
By the time of the AGM a cub team will have attended the Totem Pole competition.
Cub leaders continue to attend and represent 13[th] Cubs at district meetings to meet other leaders and see what is taking place.
Despite what has been at times awful weather this year Cubs have been making use of the outdoor seating and covered area and with the warmer weather having fun on the grass with wide games. We even had our own Highland Games. Cubs and Leaders also had an enjoyable evening using the pizza oven with thanks to Starfish and Neptune!
As well as the badges above cubs have worked on their Communicator, Pioneering, Backwoods Cooking and Gardening badges. Cubs also completed their Fire Safety badge with a visit to Redbridge Fire Station hosted by Blue Watch. This was a great evening looking around the station, learning about the Fire Service and of course trying the fire hoses!
There was a night hike from the Happy Cheese in Ashurst with another hike planned before the summer break.
Before the summer break it is hoped we will get on the water and will be doing our Paddle sports badge in preparation.
As always, my personal thanks to the Cub Team for their support and giving up their time so the Pack can enjoy all the fun of Cubs. Thanks also to other leaders in the Group who have given up their time to support us on evenings. Finally, thanks to Starfish who continues to lead the 13[th] supporting all of us. We are all looking forward to the coming year and to build on the successes of this one.

~~ Sea Scouts ~~
Since the last report we have had a full and varied programme of activities and challenges.
As a troop we took on a large-scale pioneering project of building a monkey bridge. The project involved the scouts pulling together to make “A” frames and tensioning ropes between them to make a strong and sturdy structure for them to hang from and walk across. It was a steep learning curve for both scouts and leaders and everyone had a huge sense of achievement once the project was completed.
In the summer term saw us having afloat nights at Priory Hard where scouts gained time on the water and paddlesport badges.
Unfortunately, this year’s afloat sessions have been hit with some water quality issues. In March 2024 a local group started testing the River Itchen at various points along the river and found out there were extremely high E.Coli readings. This has meant that paddling from Priory has had to be put on hold whilst the ongoing water testing is going on.
This has meant that we have had to think creatively for our afloat nights looking for activities on top of rather that in the water.
We started off with a paddling session in open canoes on the lake at Woodmill, and have recently used the gigs at the 25[th ] Southampton Sea scouts. Both sessions have had positive reactions from the scouts with most wanting to repeat these sessions again.
Our Autumn activities included night hikes, indoor pioneering, various badge work and our Christmas Fayre project of wooden reindeers and Swedish torch fires.
Over the year we have worked towards various clauses of the Challenge Badges for all of the Scouts. Many of the older Scouts only needed a few items ticked off to be able to finish all of their badges, and to then be able to achieve their Chief Scouts Gold award. This is something we continue to work on each term.
We had one of our Senior PLs (Ben) take part in Roverang again this year. Roverang is the local Scout and Guide Gang Show that has taken place in Southampton for over 50 years. This year’s show was based on an idea called “The Imaginarium” based in a magical costume shop! The scout section attended the Saturday show this year and really enjoyed the performance.
Our troop numbers have been up and down over the last year between 14-21 Scouts on the books. We have been recruiting from the district wating list and have had a few walk in on a Monday night but the majority of our new scouts have come up from our own Cub section. This has meant that since September we will have been moving scouts around the patrols to find new Patrol Leaders and Assistants and to try to develop the best teams in each patrol. In the last few weeks we have invested four new members into the troop bringing our numbers up to 23.
I would like to thank Wings, Tech, Torps and Starfish for their continued support with the scout section, especially when I have been pulled away due to family or work commitments.
I would also like to thank the Cub leaders and parent helpers for their support over the last year. Without you saying yes, sometimes at short notice to requests for help, our troop would have not been able to run.
I hope that in the coming year we will be able to build the troop back up to good numbers again and that we can continue to provide an active and varied programme for them to enjoy. We will continue to work towards giving each Scout the opportunity to learn new skills and to allow them to work towards their challenge, staged and proficiency badges so that they can achieve their Chief Scouts Gold Award.
