Our flrst research project. Avlator Gr¢>upAStudy, commenod on I" October 2023 and is scheduled
to complete In September 2024. GTOUP A Streptococcus (GAS} or'strep A. Is a barterivm which can
cause a Tan8e of diseases from mild infections affectlngthe throat and skin to severe infections
Induding menin8iths, pneumonia, fheumatic feverand sepsl& tt is e5bmated that GAS cause5 over
half a mllllon deaths each year wori(fvAde many of wh>m are thildren.
The dlsease5 caused by GAS have been in(Tea5ing in recentyears. despite the avallablliry of
antibSotlcs to treat these intectior￿. GAS barteria are usually transmitted through the throat, mouth
and nose. Avaccine whith could prevent GAS from infectiFVd thethroat, mouth and n05ewould
greatly reducethe impattof GAS If￿aSe*

They have developed an Innovative approath that uses a r￿W tethnique calledton5il orwdnoid
model. Tonsils a￿ part of the immune system which help u5 fight Infection. The research Involves
growin# cells from tonsils of patlents which We￿ removed durlng routtne surgery. To do this the
team wlll collert tonsilsfrom 20 don015, separate outthe cells and then grow the ￿115 In the
laboratory alongside drfferent part5 of the GAS bacterla. Theywill then measure the immune
response of thetonsll cells from dlfferent donws to help them make deci￿On$ on which parts of the
GA5 bacteria could be induded Tn a successful vaccine. The researth studywill run from October
2023 to September 2024.

The foundlngTrustees are Loulse Graham1th3ir}, Stephen Gazard. Quentln Stott and Stephen S
