Our aim

To promote for the benefit of the public the acquisition, conservation, preservation and operation of heritage buses and coaches and associated artefacts and to advance the education of the public in the said vehicles for the benefit of the culture and heritage of Cornwall in particular.

Activities during the reporting period

The Society has continued to progress well over the last 12 months.

The regular working days – continue fortnightly – has given the members opportunities to get hands on with the vehicles and artifacts, allowing them to also learn from our Engineering team in basic maintenance and refurbishment. 10 to 15 volunteers attend on a regular basis contributing some 1700 volunteer hours per year.

We also have also continued the Monthly Bus Club meetings in Four Lanes, Redruth. All members are invited to attend for a meal or drink and catch up on all things Cornwall Bus related. Some of our senior members will discuss historically significant events and topics and help to plan future events. These are attended by 10 members on average adding 20hrs volunteering on each session.

Other activities

At all of the below events there is publicity stalls or members present to speak to visitors at length about our organisation in order to educate the interested members of the public and preserve Cornwall bus history.

Penzance Vintage Bus Running Day – April 2024 – our major event run in association with the Thames Valley and Great Western Omnibus Trust (TVAGWOT) saw some 6500 plus free bus journeys delivered with heritage vehicles across the West of Cornwall, to educate and show historically significant vehicles and memorabilia to the people of West Cornwall. We supplied 10 vehicles and 25 or so volunteer drivers, conductors and support staff on the ground to ensure the day ran smoothly. This contributed some 700 volunteer hours.

Trevithick Day 2024 – supporting this important heritage day in Camborne, 4 vehicles and supporting volunteers ran the Park & Ride service for the organisers developing stronger links with the local community and heritage organisations. Extra 60 volunteer hours

Rame Beer and Buses Event 2024 – moving into East Cornwall to support our members who help to organise this event. 5 buses and supporting volunteers attended – additional 100 volunteer hours.

Notable events of 2024-25

The return to the road of XHK228X (38928) which was acquired by our member Mr D Jory and through grit and determination managed with group assistance and expertise to get the vehicle back on the road in April 2024. Another Bristol VR vehicle within the Society will join a long list of member and society owned vehicles in authentic Western National livery soon. We were also privileged to have a free ride out with the owner of the vehicle for a group event in May 2024.

Acquisition of former Western National, Bristol LHS, FDV 787V from our colleagues at Go Ahead South West. We have been custodian of the vehicle for a period of time prior to the gifting of the vehicle to the Society in early 2025. She joins the list of Bristol’s which worked most of their service careers in Cornwall and Devon.

Engine rebuild and recommission of Bristol VR – VDV121S (1121) after an engine failure at the last Penzance Running Day funds for a replacement engine and associated costs were covered and the vehicle attended Chepstow Classic Buses in Winkleigh for replacement and testing. This important vehicle in the collection is now performing well and should last us the next 20 years!

Engine rebuilds and recommissioning of Bedford YRQ Willowbrook, TUJ921J progressed after an engine failure. Parts availability is potential issue in this vehicle returning to the road and these are being sourced by the member / owner.

Other member acquisitions for this reporting period included Bristol VR 1128 XDV608S which the group have assisted in repairs and maintenance.

Finally, some of our younger and more technically minded members have been cataloguing our stores and archives to ensure that we can manage our resources and can assist other groups who may need spares which we have and can supply to keep more heritage buses on the road for the future.

Looking into 2025 – 2026 the Committee and Trustees are positive that the group can continue to manage the existing fleet of vehicles and can maintain our emphasis on educating the public in the Cornwall bus heritage to everyone’s benefit.
