Trustees’ Annual Report for the period

From Period start date February 2023 To Period end date August 2023

Charity name: Newton Abbot Swimming and Water Polo Club (NASWPC)

Charity registration number: 1202074

Objectives and Activities

Summary of the
purposes of the charity
as set out in its
governing document
Newton Abbot Swimming and Water Polo Club is dedicated to
supporting all members of the club to reach their full potential. The
club is inclusive, where every member is valued and encouraged to
work within the club community to achieve their goals, which may
include regional or national level performance and/or supporting
others to reach their goals.
Summary of the main
activities in relation to
those purposes for the
public benefit, in
particular, the activities,
projects or services
identified in the
accounts.
The club serves residents of the Newton Abbot and surrounding area,
through the provision of water-based sport. This is focused on
competitive swimming and water polo, but also the provision of
individual skill and fitness development, including early discovery of
Sports Club Membership. The members of the club are
predominately young people aged 4-19 years old.
Statement confirming
whether the trustees
have had regard to the
guidance issued by the
Charity Commission on
public benefit
During 2022 the committee and Trustees worked hard to understand
and ensure that the club’s aims, objectives and activities met the
requirements to be awarded charity status by the Charity
Commission. This (our first) report therefore reflects our application
for charity status.

Achievements and Performance

Summary of the main
achievements of the
charity, identifying the
difference the charity’s
work has made to the
circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any
wider benefits to society
as a whole.
NASWPC consistently provides opportunity for young residents
and families of the Newton Abbot and surrounding area to
engage with competitive swimming, water polo and volunteering
opportunities (including appropriate developmental education /
training opportunities). Our specific organised support for
engagement withSwim England licencedcompetitive events are
not otherwise available within local authority schools or council
services sports provision (beyond ESSA events). Our success can
be measured by a consistent rolling waiting list of around 40
individuals.
The benefits of engagement with NASWPC provides tangible and
measurable development opportunities for young people and
their families, focussing upon social and physical abilities
(including resilience and improved mental health), alongside
education and team orientated skills. We utilise nationally
recognised qualifications and development opportunities to build
these skills amongst volunteers and members.

Restructure of our Squad and fees framework
This year we have tirelessly focussed on the successful delivery of a restructure to
our squad-based system, ensuring progression opportunities for our members
whilst maximising pool hire time. We have linked our squad system to a more
robust fee template, ensuring fair and accessible fees alongside financial
sustainability for the charity.
Engagement & development opportunities for our members:
We have continued to be supported by a dedicated team of volunteer coaches,
team managers, chaperones and young volunteers who we offer ongoing
development opportunities to. A number of Water Polo players and coaches also
referee in theDevon and Bristol & West Leagues and we supply more referees to
these leagues than any other club. Our president, Phil Whiting also referee’s at
the British Water Polo League.
Current voluntary support for our Discovery Squads (Senior young members
supporting our most Junior members):
4 x Level 2 teachers
4 x Level 1 teachers
15 x Helpers
We are securing Level 2 courses for our Level 1 teachers and Level 1 courses for
our Helpers, when they reach the required age. Some of our helpers have
completed the Helpers Certificate. This helps towards their Duke of Edinburgh
Awards and gives them a qualification that recognises the good job they are
doing.
Competitive SWIMMING Key Achievements:

Our team have supported swimmers at many regional Galas which provides social and sport development opportunities for members. Many of our members, have achieved personal bests in all disciplines of competitive swimming with the support of our Head Coach, assisted by our dedicated team of volunteers.

Competitive WATER POLO Key Achievements

Mini Polo, U13s, U15s & U17s

Our Mini Polo Players are developing well and most have now reached the age to be able to compete in League fixtures. Next year we need to recruit younger players to join us to build on our successes and future proof the Club going forward.

In May our U13s and U15s took part in a Bristol and West League Tournament with success for both teams. Our U15s finished in silver medal positon and our U13s finished in fourth place.

We were also successful in securing silver medal position for the U17s in the Bristol & West League, the final of which was held at Millfield School Pool in May.

Men & Women’s Polo

Both our Men and Women’s teams have enjoyed a full season of Devon League & Bristol & West League matches. Our Wednesday training session continues to be well attended with our older players helping to develop the skills of the younger players that attend.

Devon League

A successful season for all teams: U13s Third (subject to confirmation after the last tournament on 18[th] Nov) U15s Second U17s Second Women Second Men Third

The Knock Out Cup is underway for our U15s, U17s, Women and Men’s Teams and runs until early January. Like last year, this is now a series of mini competitions giving all teams more matches and opportunities to play against each other now the League season has finished.

Bristol and West Water Polo League

Also a successful season: U17s Second U15s Third Women Fourth

Men Second

Other Tournaments

June saw our Women & Men’s Teams finishing in second place in the RNAS Water Polo Tournament Culdrose.

Our Womens Team competed in the Lyme Splash Tournament in August and wining another second place medal.

Six of our players were invited on a trip to Ter Apel, Netherlands to play in the 53rd Zepta Water Polo tournament with Devonport Royal, forming the Devonport Dragons. The team came first in their group.

National, Regional & County Representation

This year has seen over 19 players from across all our teams selected to represent either the South West Region and/or the County in a number of tournaments and events that have taken place. A number of players that also train with us from other clubs were also selected. Several players also play in National League teams.

GB Representation

Four players have been successful in representing GB with Tom Manley continuing as the GB goal keep. Charlie Dawson was selected for the U19s GB Squad. Calum McKenzie and Charlie Noyce were selected for the Junior Men GB Barbarians Team at the recent EU Nations tournament with the team finishing in Bronze medal position.

Regional & National Training Academy & Talent Centre

There has been a full year of regional training with a large number of players attending the training sessions at Millfield. The national Talent Centre is growing and we have a number of players that have been selected to be part of this programme which feeds into the National Training Academy.

Also of note is our three coaches that volunteer to coach at the Regional Training Academy.

Beyond membership subscriptions, additional fund-raising during this six-month Performance period totalled £185. of fundraising activities However, 2022/2023 overall fund raising efforts raised £2300 (mainly from against sponsors, donors, a grant and raffles). objectives set

Financial Review

Review of the Six month period Feb 2023 - August 2023 charity’s financial position at the end Our financial position at 31.8.2023 totalled £48056 within our capital Fund. of the period

Our overall 2022/23 financial position (after 3 years of losses) achieved a
surplus of £6779. This figure out performed our forecasted financial
status as per our 2022/23 business plan which predicteda£2000 loss.
Fees were increased at the beginning of 2022/23
As a result of the above we were able to cover a 9% increase in pool hire
cost imposed by Teignbridge Council in October 23 (note this is post
scope of this 6 month return).
Statement
explaining the
policy for holding
reserves stating
why they are held
Reserves are held in our deposit account with Lloyds bank. We
appreciate uncertainty regarding long term energy costs which directly
impact pool hire costs, our main outgoing. This represents a more
general risk to public facilities remaining open (which we currently
utilise). An ongoing consideration regarding building a surplus /
contingency fund to mitigate this risk, providing us with longer term
options which include the possibility of partnering with local outdoor
community interest pools which would however pose financial cost and
risk.

The charges in place for the various membership options are as
carefully considered each year by
the club committee and trustees. The club fees are set as low as
possible, to maximise the opportunity for members to join the
club, reflecting the cost of pool hire (the club does not own a
pool), hourly cost of Head Coach (required to prepare the training
programme, support training and
development, support Health & Safety requirements), along with
equipment costs. Any surplus income is reinvested into the club
to support training and development. The club has historic
reserves that have built up over a long period of time which were
depleted during COVID. These reserves are now starting to
recover, enabling long term sustainability.
