## **1.0 Introduction** 

This is the annual report presented by the Trustees of Friends of Mtshabezi Hospital for the Financial Year 22/02/2023 – 05/04/2024. The trustees have opted to structure and frame this report using the SORP guideline template in order to make sure that all key aspects or questions that the Charity Commission (CC) require are fully addressed systematically. In this report, the name Friends of Mtshabezi Hospital has been used interchangeably with its acronym, FoMH, for brevity. The base information is extracted from the founding documents which were submitted to the CC when FoMH first applied to be registered as a charity. 

For both ease of reading and brevity, the process of writing this report was to go into each box on the far right of the template, address each of the guideline points listed with what FoMH did or what its status with regards to that item, and thereafter clean out the guideline point or question.  The SORP reference shown in the middle columns ensures that what is answered as the report content clearly addresses all the questions / matters raised in that SORP item. 

Below now is the annual report for this reporting period in full compliance with the SORP headings and contents.

|Summary of the main<br>achievements of the charity,<br>identifying the difference the<br>charity’s work has made to<br>the circumstances of its<br>beneficiaries and any wider<br>benefits to society as a<br>whole.|Para 1.20||**Most Notable Achievements of FoMH During this Reporting Period**<br>**1.**<br>**Successful UK Charity Commission Registration on 22/02/2023**was a great achievement for<br>a very small charity in its infancy<br>**2.**<br>**Strategic Planning 2023-2025**<br>Trustees were all previously given the FoMH constitution, UK Charity Commission ’Role of a Charity<br>Trustee’ and other various documentation as well as charities that provide free training to Charities and<br>their Trustees. UK Fund Raising Regulator letter was circulated and read in order to comply with ethical<br>fundraising regulations.<br>**The Vision and Mission statements agreement and ethos**were agreed. Aspirations to provide small<br>scale free medication, sponsor a medical officer at least twice a month as currently there is no medical<br>officer in attendance and possible free consultations for financially disadvantaged expressed by some<br>members with possible outreach stations as distance of the hospital is a disadvantage for many local<br>community members. It was noted that this will be highly dependent on strong financial standing of<br>FoMH. FoMH encourage the hospital to work closely with ZACC, the Zimbabwe Association of Christian<br>Churches and the Lutheran World Vision representative as research by a member had found that these<br>organisations were assisting other local hospitals and could be of benefit to Mtshabezi hospital as well.<br>FoMH meetings were planned as practicable as possible for fourth week of each month.|

## **3. Fundraising and Marketing** 

FoMH currently uses different small-scale forms of fundraising like individual member donations and word of mouth to wider society, GoFundMe campaign and has a social media presence in WhatsApp Groups, Facebook and a dedicated FoMH Website. 

## **4. Initial Medication supply via Mtshabezi Mission Hospital** 

A plea for medication was received especially affecting the local Bible Institute for supply of medication as students attended the hospital with a number of ailments and found no pain medication at the hospital. The hospital was supplied with 3000 tablets in total of three different types of analgesia at a total cost of £100, raised in the previous financial years. 

## **5. FoMH New Ambulance Acquisition** 

FoMH continued with the mammoth task of fundraising for a much-needed new ambulance which is a joint effort with its sister chapters across other countries. UK managed to send to The Brethren in Christ Church (BICC) World Missions in America who are assisting the procurement of the ambulance, a total of or £3329.00 in previous years. Ambulance funding campaigning continued to the current financial year with a total of £182 sent to the USA. It is hoped we will have raised enough funds jointly with other countries’ joint fundraising effort to be able to purchase an ambulance. 

## **6. Ambulance Procurement Subgroup** 

This  subgroup  was  formed,  and  consultation  held  with  Japanese,  United  Kingdom  Importing  Car Specialist for appropriate vehicle for the rough African rural terrain. Appropriate vehicles suggested with pictures and approximate prizes, having looked at and clarified Zimbabwe’s vehicle import regulations and accompanying duty regulations. 

## **7. Guidelines on Donations from the Diaspora-Embassy of the Republic of Zimbabwe March 2023** 

FoMH works in collaboration with other departments in UK and Zimbabwe to ensure that it is always aware of and works within the law and current regulations of both countries. A notice from the office of the Zimbabwean Presidency informing organisations of procedures and guidelines for clearance of donated goods for ease of processes and clearance of goods under Part iii  Conditional Entry of Specified Goods of the Tariff Customs and Excise (Tariff Notice S1 203 of 2022) has been read in preparation for arrival and clearance of the ambulance

## **8. FoMH Website Building** 

Wacademy Ltd Services were tasked with the FoMH website building in order to further inform and keep users updated about the work that FoMH is doing in and in conjunction with Mtshabezi hospital The initial cost of the student services were £122.00 paid, hosting services of £48.00 and final release cost of £11.00. The process was slow and carried over, however we got our first draft and looking to move the hosting and website maintenance to a local one 

## **9. Free British National Formulary (BNF) Books For all Medicines** 

In enhancing continuous professional development, seventy two new free BNFs with all information on all medicines acquired from the Local UK National Health Service were sent at no cost to the charity to Zimbabwe for circulation to Mtshabezi Hospital, other hospitals, medical students, pharmacies and pharmacy technicians as well as nurses. 

## **10. BICC Easter Convention Southend on Sea April 2023** 

Volunteer FoMH members who are also members of the BIC Church  attended the convention meeting at their cost in an effort to market the charity and to invite members interested to join the organisation as well  as  inform  them  of  the  current  work  being  done  in  the  hospital  as  some  members  of  this denomination originate from the hospital’s local community in Zimbabwe 

**11. BICC Young and Young Adults Fellowship Meeting in Manchester- June 2023** Volunteer FoMH members who are also members of the BIC Church  attended the fellowship meeting at their cost in an effort to market the charity and to invite members interested to join the organisation as well as inform them of the current work being done in the hospital as some members of this denomination originate from the hospital’s local community in Zimbabwe. Other members planned to attend the BICC women’s Conference. 

## **12. BICC Convention Leeds April 2024** 

Volunteer FoMH members who are also members of the BIC Church  attended the convention meeting at their cost in an effort to market the charity and to invite members interested to join the organisation as well as inform them of the current work being done in the hospital as some members of this denomination originate from the hospital’s local community in Zimbabwe. 

## **13. JoJo Water Tanks and JoJo Stands** This project was to increase water capacity to the wards in this very dry part of the country where rains can be scarce for several years. FoMH bought 2 x 5000litre JoJo water tanks @ £676.00 and 1x JoJo

stand @ £534.12, transportation £163.13 and stand surrounds @£63.13 all paid in previous years. The other stand was provided in collaboration with the BICC Bulawayo Central men’s fellowship. FoMH was maximising the use of the already existing borehole, to store extra water for patients. FoMH members were pleased to finally bring to a successful end this long-awaited project this year. The project had had some stagnation due that installation of the stands needed to be done when the weather was ideal and the ground not too wet and soggy. Several FoMH local members in Zimbabwe provided the following services free of charge as their contribution to the charity and project, transportation from the city to the rural hospital, digging of the foundation, installation of the stands, mounting of the water tanks and plumbing to bring water to the wards. A handover ceremony was held at the hospital by the local FoMH team in November 2023 and pictures provided. 

**14. UK FoMH Co Chair and Chair visit to Mtshabezi Hospital Zimbabwe** . Co-Chair visited the hospital for initial assessment of the state of the ambulances and reported on the needs and options of new, second hand or repairing the one found. This hospital visit was aside to their personal visit to the country hence no expenses were incurred by the Charity, The chair also visited Zimbabwe and met with the following members, chair of FoMH Zimbabwe,  BICC regional & hospital administrator,  BICC Africa Administrative Coordinator in the city. She  also met staff and had a tour of Mtshabezi Hospital, to identify needs and discuss issues affecting working together and find ways for easier collaboration. She reported that the hospital was far from meeting the health needs of people in a safe respectful, dignified environment due to the dilapidated state of the buildings and lack of equipment comparing with UK hospitals where she has worked as a nurse. This journey was at her own cost as she had gone to lay to rest a UK FoMH trustee member who had sadly passed away unexpectedly. A UK Trustee visited the country and had meeting with Lutheran Church World Visio representative to forge the way forward and learn lessons.  A UK  member also visited the hospital in February and reported on the state of the increased water capacity as well as confirming the state of repair the hospital is in.
