Harry Sloyden Charity (Wickhambreaux) For Annual Parish Meeting Wickhambreaux Parish Council 14[th] Mayl 2024 Peter Collinson 

Harry Sloyden, a resident of Wickhambreaux died in 1568. Queen Elizabeth had been on the throne for 10 years, and this year marks the start of the second half of her reign. Harry Sloyden left various small things to his family but wanted to provide for his wife. He left her 7 acres in Littlebourne that was intended to keep her. After her death, the land was to be left to the ‘poor of Littlebourne and Wickhambreaux’. I wonder, but have no proof, that the money was used to support the Workhouse in Wickhambreaux. 

In 1910, the Charity Commission created a trust for the charity. The trust laid down how the charity was to be governed. Littlebourne and Wickhambreaux had separate bodies of trustees, and the annual revenue was to be divided equally between them. 

In 1965, the trustees applied to the Charity Commission to sell the land and divide the sale price equally. The sale was agreed, and the documentation shows the location of the land. However, the Charity Commission didn’t seem to point out that this act would in fact create two charities and one of the two sets of trustees should acquire a new registration number with the commission. Both charities continued to use the original registration number. 

I and Tina Burton took over as trustees about three years ago. The Charity is now registered as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO). It has its own constitution based on the Charity Commission’s model. 

The trustees have access to some money and we are ready to help people in financial need that live in the ‘ancient parish of Wickhambreaux’, which sadly excludes Stodmarsh because it was different parish in 1658.
