Skelmanthorpe & District u3a Trustee Report AGM held 12 November 2025
The format of this report follows our traditional pattern:-
-
Where we are now.
-
Where we want to be.
-
How we will get there.
Where are we now:-
Currently membership is over 300 once again and exceeds pre COVID levels. Throughout the year over 30 activities have been offered and enjoyed by our members. While some activities have ceased, new ones have emerged:Photography An increased range of reading groups French, German and Spanish conversation have all split to accommodate different levels of competence Pickle Ball Play reading. Some groups have waiting lists and where possible have been split. Group leaders are of course necessary for the success of a group and we are deeply indebted for their enthusiasm and competence. Some groups have initiated joint leadership and this has helped overcome the initial reluctance to accept responsibility for the smooth running of the group. As we have come to expect some outstanding events, trips and presentations have been enjoyed this year:Christmas 2024 at Tatton Park Christmas meal at The Dunkirk Spring visit to the Dutch bulb fields and Bruges The National Arboretum The Himalayan Gardens The Royal Albert Hall and London stay These have been impeccably organised by Mike.
Similarly Diane our incomparable organiser of presentations has produced a varied selection of speakers:The History of Storthes Hall Yorkshire Air Ambulance What inspires Art? Policing in the past RNLI Denby Dale Pies Children’s favourites from the 50’s Life in the NHS Attendance continues to rise and usually averages 40+. Finances are healthy and FUNDS are, as always available for purchases which will enhance member's enjoyment and experiences. This year we have used them to finance two Sing Alongs, the production of a book of short stories written by members of the Creative Writing Group, subsidising Coach Hire for trips, and purchase of the tray bakes which we hope you enjoyed today!
Finally we must acknowledge the key role played by both our COMMITTEE and the outstanding GROUP LEADERS, without whose energy and enthusiasm our organisation could not exist.
Where we want to be .
We continue with our prime focus to provide experiences, new skills and especially companionship
for retirees within the five villages of the Upper Dearne Valley. Clearly we have succeeded in this, however the absence of any nominees for the Committee is a cause of great concern which is only compounded by the difficulty of attracting Group Leaders. With only one exception, (Treasurer), no role requires particular expertise and we work on the premise that we learn together and when necessary work things out together. Over the last few years The Yorkshire Regional Branch has been trying to incorporate local U3A’s into joint meetings where experiences, new skills and information can be exchanged. We remain content and parochial, but it is something which could be explored by the welcome addition of any new committee members.
How we will get there
Most members are happy with the current philosophy especially valuing the companionship the activities provided.
However I will end with a warning that unless we have more members prepared to join the Committee or volunteer to coordinate groups then there is the danger of slow decline. With this in mind the committee will need to focus next year on recruitment to ‘leadership’ positions and retention thereof.
