Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)

In this second year of operation, we have focused on acting upon the key priorities of our villagers as identified in last year’s consultation, and within the scope of our stated objectives. Following on from securing a suitable site and getting the necessary permissions and consents to set up the allotments and community garden space, we have focused on getting the infrastructure and buildings in place, and the orchard, beds and raised beds planted. We have also secured tenants for all the allotment plots and have recruited local volunteers to work on the community garden and public areas. We have commenced our programme of training events to develop people’s horticultural skills and build confidence. We have undertaken this with due regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit, in particular by ensuring that the framework and prioritisation of our initial activities have been directed by the prospective beneficiaries, seeking consensus or the majority view in consultations, and by ensuring that our financial reporting is in accordance with SoRP FRS102.

Additional details of objectives and activities (Optional information)

We do not make grants or invest funds as all income is put back into the delivery of our objectives. We have volunteers at the heart of our activities planned for and held in the community garden and see this aspect of our work as fundamental to the health and wellbeing strand of our objectives. We have already had extensive feedback on the health and wellbeing benefits that access to the communal gardens are bringing.

Section D Achievements and performance

Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year

2024 has been an exciting development and consolidation year for our charity. We finally secured ownership of our site and have been able to complete the initial groundworks and erection of the community pavilion and greenhouse, as well as the installation of a water supply and the building of the raised beds.

In addition to the initial Section 106 money allocated to this project, we were able to apply for and secure funding from a range of local, national and public bodies including the National Lottery, as well as support from the Woodland Trust with trees for the site. This has enabled us to plant the perimeter hedge and small woodland, as well as planting a community orchard.

We kept the village abreast of these developments and ran an open site visit day for village residents after the village show in September 2024 and have run a range of volunteer participation days to draw new people into the organisation and maintenance of the site. We also had a stall at the village fete in July 2024 to raise awareness and offer people the opportunity to ‘adopt a tree’ in the orchard. This resulted in new people coming to the site to plant ‘their’ tree.

Naming the site “Spencer’s Field” in recognition of the outstanding support the village has received from the Spencer family who used to farm the land on which our site is located has proved very popular and a local volunteer has made us fabric bunting to hang out in the pavilion which spells out the name.

We are now in a very strong position to continue to be delivering more direct and tangible benefits to the village in our next year.
