19| Page 2 of 19 www.aftermatters.org.uk Charity number: 1201762 ## **About Us** Maxine and Louise are the co-founders of After Matters, which is a home grown charity established by the two mums at the end of 2021, to provide inclusion, support and signpost sources of help for young brain injury survivors (aged 16-25) and their families within the Greater Manchester area. The two mums have a very personal reason for setting up the charity as they met when their sons, aged 17 and 18, at the time, were rushed into the same hospital (Salford Royal Hospital) for emergency lifesaving surgery after sustaining traumatic brain injuries in separate, unrelated incidents. Many brain injury survivors feel abandoned once they leave hospital and they just don’t know where to turn to for help. After Matters is here to help and support young people who have been impacted by acquired brain injury. In addition to signposting and offering emotional support to families affected by acquired brain injury, After Matters also fundraise to help families by providing a grant scheme. A little financial support can be provided to applicants to help with recovery and rehabilitation costs, such as therapy sessions, treatment, transport, or even aids or equipment which may be needed. The charity have organised and held a number of fundraising events across the period 1st December 2023 to 30th November 2024, which have all proved to be very successful. After Matters became a registered charity at the end of January 2023 (registered charity number 1201762). Page 4 of 19 www.aftermatters.org.uk Charity number: 1201762 ## **December 2024 to November 2025 Activities & Events** Each month during this last financial year we focused on promoting our charity and our grant programme to raise our profile and enable us to reach more people within the brain injury community. In addition, as we take a look back at our activities of what we've been up to, we have had some real successes of activity during our year December 2024 to November 2025 as detailed on pages 5 to 13. For the year ahead December 2025 to November 2026 we want to focus on reaching out to more neuro rehab facilities to raise the profile of After Matters to enable us to reach more people to support. ## **Our Last Financial Year’s Activity** ## **December 2024** During December, we launched our annual Christmas card appeal for a charity donation instead of sending out Christmas cards. Please consider donating to After Matters and help to make a difference to the rehabilitation of a young brain injury survivor. You can donate by visiting our website and clicking on the donate button at https://aftermatters.org.uk/ Meetings were held with Salford & Rochdale Neuro rehab units, raising awareness of After Matters and telling our story to the community neuro rehab teams. Our Flyers were distributed among the teams to share with networks and families that we may be able to support. In December we also sent out our annual message to our social media followers and supporters: As we end our very first year, we would like to especially thank all the wonderful volunteers, local businesses and organisations who have helped and supported us during 2024. Our fundraising events would not have been as successful if we had not had the extra help from the many volunteers within our local community who stepped forward and really made a difference at the events. Page 5 of 19 www.aftermatters.org.uk Charity number: 1201762 ## **January 2025** We promoted a call for research participants on behalf of the University of Manchester: Are you a university student in the Northwest with a Brain Injury? We want to hear your views! We are investigating lived experiences of individuals with Brain Injury throughout their time in university, specifically looking at the support offered and how to improve this. You will be invited to attend a single one-hour interview. This will be either in person at the University of Manchester or via Microsoft Teams. Also in January We promoted a reel of a poem written and performed by our very own trustee Claudia Laird to raise awareness and promote our next upcoming event in March A Creative transformation ACT 2. Brain tumour survivor, children’s nurse, and winner of the UKABIF Inspiration Award 2024, @claudslaird was recently featured on BBC Morning Live with @nickichappers. As a dedicated trustee of our ever-growing charity and community, we’re thrilled to have her join us at @42ndstreetmcr for our upcoming event. This was for an event f or young people and young carers (aged 16-25) of people with lived experience of brain injury. The event was being held at The Horsfall, 42nd Street 87-91 Great Ancoats Street, Manchester, M4 5AG. Page 7 of 19 www.aftermatters.org.uk Charity number: 1201762 ## **April 2025** On 4th April our Creative Transformation interactive workshop 'A Creative Transformation, ACT 2' took place at the Horsfall, 42nd Street in Manchester. The event was held for young people and young carers (aged 16-25) of people with lived experience of brain injury. Exploring prompts, questions and free writing of lived experience in a supportive and richly creative environment. Working together as a community of survivors and carers of survivors, during the workshop we joined forces to share back in this safe space to meet people who have had similar experiences and made art from those experiences! This event was led by Eleanor Blackburn @EleanorMay_Actor, a 27-year-old neurodivergent, disabled, working class, queer actor/writer/theatre-maker/poet who had a brain injury when she was 18. Held at 42nd Street, a young person-centred mental health charity and therapeutic space the event is part of ‘A Creative Transformation, ACT 2’ (funded by Arts Council England), an organisation led by and for brain injury survivors, supporting participants to make art, tell their stories and challenge norms. ACT 2 is directed by how art helps us cope and live well, after brain injury. ACT are working in collaboration with @After_Matters a charity empowering young minds and helping to heal families by providing inclusion and support for young people living with an acquired brain injury. The study aims to identify and evaluate interventions designed to support the mental health and wellbeing of young people. Also in June friend of After Matters and family member Ava Hayden organised a climb up Scafell Pike in the Lake District with her college student friends to raise funds for our charity. This event was sponsored by local business SPC Fabrications Ltd. Wishing our fabulous supporters Ava Hayden, Maddie Webster, Mollie Nolan, Emi Booth, Maiya Battersby, and Suzie Wysocka the very best of luck today as they take on the Scafell Pike Challenge all in aid of After Matters! 🍀⛰🥾🥾 The friends from @rochdalesfc who have just completed their A level exams decided they wanted to climb England’s highest mountain to raise funds for After Matters which will enable us to help and support more young people (aged 16-25) who are living with acquired brain injury in the Greater Manchester area. We wish them lots of luck for today especially as it isn’t looking to be the most ideal weather conditions and we will be routing for them all the way! With a beautiful, dazzling painting on the front cover by Claire Laffoley, this extraordinary zine contains incredible powerful poems by @eleanormay_actor @claudslaird (one of our very own trustees), Ryan Hepton, Sebastian and Afsana Elanko and the amazing Lorna Collins herself @sensinglorna who has put this zine together and got it published. We are proud to say that @after_matters took part in one of these poems too at a recent event we attended with Lorna in Manchester. If you would like to win a copy of this beautiful zine. Just go onto the Give as you Live website, or download the app and search for After Matters, then when making your purchase from any of the many participating stores, a small percentage will be automatically donated to our charity at absolutely no cost to you! ## **Summary of Activities & Events** ## **Key Successes** During the fourth year of After Matters operating as a charitable organisation, we took the decision to focus more on continuing the promotion of our charity and our grant programme rather than fundraising as we wanted to commence utilising the funds we had accumulated in our previous years of operation and put them to good use. Hayley Jones, our treasurer has prepared the financials and this is shown in more detail within the Treasurers’ Report, but it is very rewarding for our trustees and supporters to know that we have continued to achieve successes in our aims during our fourth year of operation. We have received some great support and very generous donations from other supporters and organisations wanting to help our cause and during some of our planned fundraising events. We have been supported by local Greater Manchester businesses and organisations such as Kathryn L Wilkinson Wealth Management Ltd and Knights Digital. We have raised the profile of After Matters within the local communities of Rochdale, Bury, Whitworth, Manchester and Greater Manchester as a whole and we will continue to do this as we move forward into 2026. ## **Areas for Improvement** We continue to support families who contacted us via phone and email and we have been able to offer emotional support to families and also signpost them to other sources of help. We set the objective to launch a grant scheme to help families with financial support with the objective of the funds being used to help provide for treatment, therapy, equipment, travel costs and vocational rehabilitation, etc. We can report that our grant scheme was Page 13 of 19 www.aftermatters.org.uk Charity number: 1201762 launched on 1st March 2024 and we are now receiving grant applications and awarding grants to support families affected by acquired brain injury where needed. We also recognised that we needed more help with getting the grant scheme promoted further and we have continued to do this as much as we can on our social media pages and by creating our own LinkedIn page and further more, in collaboration of working with other organisations such as Salford Royal Hospital, Greater Manchester Neuro Rehab Community Hub, Rochdale Neuro Rehab Community Hub, the Stroke Society among others. We recognise the grant programme is not being as heavily utilised as we would wish and so we need to continue with promotions and discuss and consider other ideas in raising the profile of the charity and grant scheme as an area for improvement moving forward. ## **Objectives For The Future** Our proposals for the future are: - To focus the charity’s main objectives to be offering emotional support and signposting services to families. - We want to reach more young survivors and their families to help by continuing to promote the grant scheme. - To hold further interactive workshops bringing young people living with acquired brain injury and their families together. We have used this last 12 months to focus on getting the After Matters charity and the grant scheme promoted and also getting additional promotional materials for this designed and supplied. - We have our own policies, procedures and risk assessments documented. - We have continued to update our social media platforms. - We have promoted some of our films to raise awareness of brain injury and promote our work at After Matters. - We have also put a lot of effort into our fundraising activities in previous years and which has enabled our grant programme fund to be in a healthy position and enable us to award more grants to people in need. We are passionate and really care about ensuring a young person living with an acquired brain injury gets the right help they need to achieve their best possible recovery and as we move into 2026 we look forward to being able to do this as a result of the work we have conducted during our last financial year. Of course, a lot of this would not be possible without the help and support we have received from the organisations mentioned above (under our Key Successes) and for that we are truly grateful and appreciate the extra support, but in particular, we would really like to thank Knights Digital and Kathryn L Wilkinson Wealth Management Ltd who continue to support us every month as they believe in our mission in making a difference to the life of a young person living with an acquired brain injury. Our fundraising events would also not have been as successful if we had not had the extra help from the many volunteers within our local community who stepped forward and really made a difference at the events.
