## **About Us** 

Maxine and Louise are the co-founders of After Matters, which is a home grown charity established by the two mums at the end of 2021, to provide inclusion, support and signpost sources of help for young brain injury survivors (aged 16-25) and their families within the Greater Manchester area. 

The two mums have a very personal reason for setting up the charity as they met when their sons, aged 17 and 18, at the time, were rushed into the same hospital (Salford Royal Hospital) for emergency lifesaving surgery after sustaining traumatic brain injuries in separate, unrelated incidents. 

Many brain injury survivors feel abandoned once they leave hospital and they just don’t know where to turn to for help. 

After Matters is here to help and support young people who have been impacted by acquired brain injury. 

In addition to signposting and offering emotional support to families affected by acquired brain injury, After Matters also fundraise to help families by providing a grant scheme.  A little financial support can be provided to applicants to help with recovery and rehabilitation costs, such as therapy sessions, treatment, transport, or even aids or equipment which may be needed.  The charity have organised and held a number of fundraising events across the period 1st December 2023 to 30th November 2024, which have all proved to be very successful.

To provide inclusion, support and sources of help for young (aged 16-25) brain injury survivors and their families and to raise awareness of a hidden disability.

A future where families of young people with a brain injury are aware of and have access to the support they and their families need to aid their recovery journeys.

## **The Objects of After Matters** 

The objects of After Matters are: 

To relieve the needs and help young brain injury survivors (aged 16-25) and their families within the Greater Manchester area particularly, but not exclusively by: 

- Facilitating sessions and wellbeing workshops for the parents and young survivors, to help provide inclusion and emotional support. 

- Helping to connect young survivors and families affected by brain injury to professional support agencies and other charities to further support. 

- To act as a resource for young brain injury survivors (aged 16-25) and their families living within Greater Manchester, by providing support and signposting sources of help to improve physical, cognitive, memory and mental health as a means of: 

   - (a)  advancing in life and helping young people develop their skills, capacities and capabilities to enable them to achieve their best possible recovery from brain injury; 

   - (b)  relieving unemployment and helping young survivors to get back to college/work with sources of support; 

   - (c)  providing financial support toward recreational and leisure time activity in the interests of social welfare for young survivors living in the area of benefit who have need by reason of their disability with a view to improving the conditions of life of such persons. To help with funding specific therapies and treatments for young brain injury survivors at the most optimum time of rehabilitation to help them to achieve their best possible recovery. 

- To promote awareness of brain injury in an effort to tackle discrimination and reduce the stigma felt by young brain injury survivors.

## **December 2023 to November 2024 Activities & Events** 

I'm pleased to say as we take a look back at our activities of what we've been up to, we have had some real successes of activity during our year December 2023 to November 2024 as detailed on pages 6 to 14. 

We have more plans for the year ahead December 2024 to November 2025, with some activity we can already report on such as: 

- Reaching out to more neuro rehab facilities to raise the profile of our charity, again, to enable us to reach more people to support.  Trustee Louise will be taking on this project, arranging meetings and promoting the charity across hospitals, neuro units, GPs, and clinics etc across the Greater Manchester area. 

- After Matters will be part of the “A Creative Transformation Project” to be held in April 2025 at 42nd Street in Manchester.  This is an event where young people living with acquired brain injury and young carers (16 - 25) from the local community will come together and meet people who have similar experiences.  It will be a great day of raising awareness and understanding, while exploring prompts, questions and free writing, to express lived experiences in a supporting and creative environment. 

- A fundraising event in June 2025 is being planned where a group of young, local college students from Rochdale Sixth Form will be taking on the climb up England’s tallest mountain, Scafell Pike to raise funds for After Matters.

## **Our Last Financial Year’s Activity** 

## **December 2023** 

We had some changes in the trustee team take place this month with the resignation of Josh Jones due to changes in his personal life and taking on more responsibilities.  Also Louise Bird decided to step down from her role as secretary to focus more on the fundraising activities for the charity and the secretarial duties were taken up for the interim by Maxine Hayden until a suitable replacement could be found. 

We did however gain a new addition to our team - Dr Will Curvis! 

Will is a clinical neuropsychologist with a particular interest in supporting people to understand and cope with the psychological, emotional, cognitive and behavioural needs that might result from brain injury or neuropsychological problems. 

Dr Will Curvis has worked across a range of inpatient and outpatient clinical health and neuropsychology services including A&E, Major Trauma and stroke wards, as well as acute neurosurgery and slow-stream inpatient rehabilitation services. 

Will is a strong believer in the value of supporting equality, diversity and inclusion and we

know he will be a great asset to After Matters in the work that we do!  Welcome on board Will! 


During December, we also  launched our Christmas card appeal for a charity donation instead of sending out Christmas cards.

**January 2024** 

We were delighted to announce that Claudia Laird, who is a young person living with an acquired brain injury herself (following a brain tumour diagnosis and life saving emergency neurosurgery) has joined the After Matters team.

Claudia has a love and passion for raising awareness of our cause and helping others to thrive to their best potential while living with a brain injury. Welcome on Board Claudia! 


We were also delighted to have gained a new sponsor for After Matters: Kathryn L Wilkinson Wealth Management Ltd who has kindly and generously agreed to cover the majority of our annual operational costs by way of monthly direct debit payment of £200. This is a huge help in enabling the majority of the fundraising work we do to be used more specifically in supporting and helping our young people living with acquired brain injury. 

## **February 2024** 

We promoted a luxury holiday competition during February, with the lucky winner to be announced the following month to raise funds for the grant scheme soon to be launched: To celebrate a new month and exciting upcoming events at aftermatters we are starting the month with a very special & luxurious competition prize. 

This includes a 3 night stay in an incredible 6-bedroomed (12 person!) dog friendly house located in the heart of the Lake District. Dates: Fri 14 June-Mon 17th June. Other dates in

## **March 2024** 

On the 1st of March we were so proud to launch our After Matters Grant Programme after all the hard work of fundraising and drafting up the policies and criteria, we were so happy to be ready to launch the grant process and start helping people with what they may need to aid their rehabilitation. 

As we enter the Brain Injury Awareness Month of March we have some very exciting news for you all!  We are launching our grant application process as detailed below. 

So if you are a young person living with an acquired brain injury within the Greater Manchester and nearby surrounding area, then please reach out to us…we are here for you!

Also in March we promoted and held our very first interactive workshop on 20th March 2024 with support from Jamie McDonnell at Slater & Gordon lawyers. 

Thank you to all who attended our free event held on Wednesday 20th March at The Midland Hotel in Manchester. The day proved to be a huge success as we had an overwhelming response from our attendees. The guests first listened to the journeys of some of our young people living with an acquired brain injury and the challenges they face on a daily basis. Everyone then took part in the interactive workshop to see how we can all help to bridge the gaps and improve quality of life. 

We also had a very informative presentation from Dr Ayaz Bhuta MBE PLY and Rhonda McPhail, both from SCOPE who explained how they can help to support our young survivors getting back into further education and employment with their Career Pathways and how they can help with social isolation with their Youth Community Collective (YCC). 

Our new grant programme was also promoted at our event which was attended by young survivors and their families, along with professionals working across the field of brain injury.

Also on 21st March, our volunteer Claudia Laird announced the Holiday giveaway winner! 

A huge thank you to everyone who has purchased a ticket. 

This beautiful holiday home has been very kindly donated to us by a donor who wished to remain anonymous, but it has helped us to raise £1,329.80 for our charity which will go a long way to helping some of our young brain injury survivors to achieve their best possible recovery. 

Another fundraiser also took place on Easter Saturday 30th March 2024. 

A huge thanks to The Britannia Coconut Dancers for their support - helping to raise a fantastic amount of £1,203.62! 

This local folk troupe based in the Rossendale Valley took to the local streets on Easter Saturday performing their Easter Boundary Dance routines to help raise funds for our charity.

The event proved to be a great day with a huge turnout from the local community and support from local businesses.

## **May 2024** 

On 2nd May our Annual General Meeting was held following the finalised financial statements from our newly appointed chartered accountants Moss & Williamson Ltd.

## **July 2024** 

On 6th July, friend and charity supporter Bernie Burke and her son Sean took on the Peak District Ultra Challenge - a thrilling trek through the beautiful landscapes of the Peak District. They managed to raise a grand total of £1,054.02 for After Matters! 

Bernie is a brain injury survivor herself having suffered a bleed on the brain in the earlier part of 2023 so she knows only too well the challenges and the journey that our young people living with an acquired brain injury have to endure. 

Bernie says:  “I am excited to share with you the cause I am fundraising for - the St. James's Place Charitable Foundation, in aid of After Matters, Macmillan Cancer Support and Alzheimer’s Society, all very worthy causes.  This event holds a special place in my heart as it combines my love for adventure with the opportunity to make a difference. Thank you for your generosity and support!” 

This is an incredible challenge that Bernie set for herself, especially after only such short time since she acquired her brain injury, but that's the spirit and determination that she has and she is a true warrior and inspiration to many!

Also in July some of the After Matters team had a brilliant day at the Fully Accessible Festival held in Bury. 

The sun was shining, people from the local community had lots of fun and we were able to tell people about our charity and our new grant scheme.  We also got to meet some other great charities & organisations! 

Thank you to all our lovely volunteers who gave up their Sunday today to help with the face painting, pebble painting and games.

## **November 2024** 

We held our first Christmas Fair on 2nd November at Sunnyside Day Centre in Whitworth and the day proved to be a great success with a grand total of £821 being raised for After Matters!

We could not end our year without a mention of how proud we were to hear the news that our very inspiring volunteer Claudia Laird had been nominated for and also won the UKABIF Stephen McAleese Award for Inspiration 2024!  The Awards were presented at the UKABIF Pre Time For Change Summit dinner on Sunday 3rd November at The Lowry in Salford.  To be nominated alone is such wonderful recognition of the resilience and determination Claudia has shown since recovering post brain injury. 

Claudia is a huge asset to our charity and works tirelessly to raise awareness and help other young people living with an acquired brain injury. She continues to be a great advocate for promoting the After Matters charity and our grant programme. Like many other young brain injury survivors, Claudia is a very inspirational person and a strong role model, always helping others wherever she can. 


On 29th November we also launched our Christmas shopping donation campaign and asked our supporters and social media followers to consider using the Give as you Live platform while doing Christmas shopping and supporting our charity at the same time.

**Summary of Activities & Events Key Successes** 

During the third year of After Matters operating as a charitable organisation, we have raised a grand total of £6,427.46 from fundraising activities and donations after the costs have been deducted. 

Hayley Jones, our treasurer has prepared the financials and this is shown in more detail within the Treasurers’ Report, but it is very rewarding for our trustees and supporters to know that we have continued to achieve successes in our aims and fundraising activities during our third year. 

We have received some great support and very generous donations from other organisations wanting to help our cause and during some of our planned fundraising events.  We have been supported by local Greater Manchester businesses and organisations such as Kathryn L Wilkinson Wealth Management Ltd, Slater & Gordon lawyers Manchester, Action Together Rochdale, Tunshill Golf Club, The Sandwich Station,

and local businesses and stall holders Amanda from Tropics Treats, Curious Art, IsoEva Fairies and several other businesses who have helped with kind donations during our fundraising events. We have brought people together from the local community and helped to raise more awareness during our third year of operation in supporting young people living with acquired brain injury. 

We have raised the profile of After Matters within the local communities of Rochdale, Bury, Whitworth, Manchester and Greater Manchester as a whole and we will continue to do this as we move forward into 2025. 

## **Areas for Improvement** 

We continue to support families who contacted us via phone and email and we have been able to offer emotional support to families and also signpost them to other sources of help. We set the objective to launch a grant scheme to help families with financial support with the objective of the funds being used to help provide for treatment, therapy, equipment, travel costs and vocational rehabilitation, etc.  We can report that our grant scheme was launched on 1st March 2024 and we are now receiving grant applications and awarding grants to support families affected by acquired brain injury where needed. 

Last year we identified that we needed more help, particularly with administration work and finding a new secretary and we are pleased to report that we now have new volunteer Diane Hallworth who has joined our team in the role of secretary. 

We also recognised that we needed more help with getting the grant scheme promoted and although the chair has initially taken on this responsibility with help from other trustees Will Curvis, Claudia Laird and Sabrina Lawlor, it was recognised that a more structured approach would help in ensuring we are raising the profile of the charity and grant scheme and this needs to be considered and actioned as an area for improvement moving forward.

## **Chair’s Closing Remarks** 

As we end our financial year for 2024, we reflect on what we have achieved so far. 

We have used this last 12 months to focus on getting the grant scheme launched, including writing up the policies and assessment criteria forms etc and also getting promotional materials for this designed and supplied thanks to Jamie McDonnell from Slater & Gordon lawyers. 

We also continued with more fundraising activities, raising the profile of After Matters, and we launched the grant scheme on 1st March 2024 during brain injury awareness month. 

- We have our own policies, procedures and risk assessments documented. 

- We have continued to update our social media platforms. 

- We have created more films to raise awareness of brain injury and promote our work at After Matters. 

- We have also put a lot of effort into our fundraising activities during 2024. 

We are passionate and really care about ensuring a young person living with an acquired brain injury gets the right help they need to achieve their best possible recovery and as we move into 2025, we look forward to being able to do this as a result of the work we have conducted during our last financial year. 

Of course, a lot of this would not be possible without the help and support we have received from the organisations mentioned above (under our Key Successes) and for that we are truly grateful and appreciate the extra support, but in particular, we would really like to thank Jamie McDonnell and Slater & Gordon lawyers, Knights Digital, Julie Durrant from Action Together Rochdale and Kathryn L Wilkinson Wealth Management Ltd who continue to support us every month as they believe in our mission in making a difference to the life of a young person living with an acquired brain injury.

Our fundraising events would also not have been as successful if we had not had the extra help from the many volunteers within our local community who stepped forward and really made a difference at the events. 

Finally, I would like to finish the Chair’s report by thanking everyone for attending the AGM meeting today and for all the work our trustees have conducted over these last twelve months.  We look forward to continuing our work through 2025 and helping as many young brain injury survivors as we can.

for use in future periods.
