Welcome from our Chair
2024 marked the year in which, thanks to the immense generosity of the British public, Hospice Ukraine was able to start making donations to local palliative care teams in Ukraine, helping enable them to carry out their vital work supporting patients at the end of life.
In 2024 we have been able to support two incredible palliative care teams, one based just outside the city of Lviv at Sambir Hospice (Lviv), the other in Kyiv at the charitable Dobrubut Foundation.
Thanks to generous support from Land Rover Europe and Winner Imports Ukraine Ltd, we were able to purchase at half price a Land Rover Defender for Sambir Hospice, so that they can reach patients in their own homes in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains, delivering morphine, other medicines and vital home palliative care. Two of our trustees – myself and Henry Marsh – visited Sambir in December 2024 to deliver the hospice, and see it in action, travelling in the vehicle to patients in their own homes.
We have also helped fund a palliative care psychologist to support patients in the community in the outskirts of Kyiv, part of an intiative set up the by Dobrubut Foundation in order to provide much-needed care to vulnerable patients appeaching the end of life.
It has been a joy and a privilege to help such vulnerable patients in a country facing such severe challenges. Witnessing the new Sambir Hospice Land Rover driving out to patients in their homes that the team could not otherwise reach was deeply moving – a highlight of my life.
We are hugely grateful to everyone who has so kindly supported our endeavours.
Thank you all.

Trustees’ Report for 2024-2025
Introduction
The trustees are pleased to present their annual report together with the financial statements of Hospice Ukraine (the charity) for the year ending 31 January 2025.
The legal and administrative information set out on page 3 forms part of this report.
The Trustees confirm that the annual report and financial statements of the charity comply with the current statutory requirements, the requirements of the charity's governing document and the provisions of the Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP) FRS 102 1A "Accounting and Reporting by Charities"
Structure, governance and management
The constitution provides for a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 12 trustees. There shall be a quorum if at least 3 are in attendance. The chair of trustees is responsible for the induction of new trustees, which includes awareness of a trustee's responsibilities.
The charity is administered by the trustees. The trustees meet regularly during the year and receive reports on the state and developments of the affairs of the charity.
The trustees examine the major risks that the charity may face each financial year. They have developed systems to monitor and control these risks to mitigate the impact they may have on the charity.
Objectives and activities of the charity
The objectives of the charity are to promote the public benefit and advancement of health among people in Ukraine who are terminally ill with cancer or other incurable illnesses or conditions requiring palliative care through:
-
Supporting, developing and advocating for the delivery of palliative care services in Ukraine by providing grants to local hospices or to other organisations or individuals in Ukraine engaged in the provision of palliative care.
-
Funding and/or delivering or facilitating training (either alone or in partnership with other organisations) for palliative care professionals in Ukraine, to support and enable them to provide effective palliative care locally.
-
The improvement and extension of hospices in Ukraine.
Annual Report 2025 5
The paragraphs below set out our activities, achievements and performance during the year February 2024 – January 2025, which are directly related to the objectives and purposes for which the charity exists. The trustees confirm that they have complied with the duty in s17(5) of the Charities Act 2011 to have due regard to the Charity Commissions’ guidance on public benefit, including Public Benefit: reporting' [PB3].
Activities, achievements and performance of the charity
2024 was an extremely exciting year for Hospice Ukraine, since it marked the charity’s first concrete donations of funds and resources to support the work of local palliative care teams in Ukraine.
(Much of 2023 - our first operational year since registration with the Charity Commission i– was spent both fundraising and navigating the complicated logistics and due diligence of opening bank accounts capable of making large donations to a country at war. During 2023, we also identified the first two hospice teams we would support on the ground on Ukraine, Sambir Hospice outside Lviv and the charitable Dobrubut Foundation in Kyiv.)
Our key activities in 2024 comprised:
1. Donation of funds to the Dobrubut Foundation, Kyiv
In 2024, Hospice Ukraine donated the sum of £20,030 to the charitable Dobrubut Foundation to fund the work of a palliative care psychologist to visit patients in their own homes on the outskirts of Kyiv, providing a much-needed community service to a particularly vulnerable patient cohort. There is no state provision of community palliative care to patients approaching the end of life in their homes, so this represented a vital service for these patients.
2. Donation of a Land Rover Defender to Sambir Hospice, Lviv
The medical director of Sambir Hospice reported to us in early 2024 that their greatest need was a means of reaching patients in their own homes, ideally, a reliable 4x4 off-road vehicle that could navigate primitive, damaged and sometimes dirt roads in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains. Without such a vehicle, patients were at risk of being unable to receive even basic palliative care such as morphine. Sambir Hospice did not have its own vehicle capable of negotiating off-road conditions, and often struggled with their own vehicles becoming trapped in mud or snow when trying to reach patients.
Hospice Ukraine appealed to Land Rover Europe, who kindly agreed to put us in touch with their local Ukrainian partner, Winner Imports Ukraine Ltd, who import Land Rovers into the country. Winner very generously agreed to sell us a cost price Land rover Defender (commercial value £60,000) for half its sales value, i.e. £30,000 so that we could give it to Sambir Hospice.
Annual Report 2025 6
Winner and Sambir Hospice negotiated with the local authorities in Lviv to ensure this vehicle, once supplied, had the necessary paperwork to avoid being requisitioned by the Armed Forces into the army.
In late December, a few days before Christmas, two of our trustees, Rachel Clarke and Henry Marsh, delivered the Land Rover to Sambir Hospice, where it has been used ever since to provide palliative care to patients in their own homes.

- Trustees’ visit to Ukraine, December 2024
In December 2024, Rachel Clarke and Henry Marsh visited Ukraine in order to deliver the Land Rover Defender to Sambir Hospice and also to provide medical education and training. During this trip, they both lectured to medical students and doctors, providing teaching on palliative care and doctors’ communication skills.
