Welcome from our Chair

Hospice Ukraine was founded after two of our trustees (myself, an NHS palliative care doctor, and Mr Henry Marsh, a former NHS neurosurgeon) visited Ukraine in October 2022, eight months after the Russian invasion began. We witnessed firsthand - and were deeply moved by - the immense courage and resilience of local palliative care teams as they endeavoured to care for their patients under conditions of war in the capital, Kyiv, and in the city of Lviv in eastern Ukraine. We were determined to try and help them. Together with local neurosurgeon, Mr Andrii Myzak, based in Kyiv, we conceived of a UK-based charity that would raise funds in order to provide local Ukrainian hospice teams with vitally needed resources, both practical and educational, with which to help patients in need of palliative and end-of-life care.

In January 2023, Hospice Ukraine was registered with the Charity Commission of England and Wales and, five months later, we held our inaugural fundraising Gala at the Royal Society of Medicine in London. Then, in October 2023, Henry and I returned to Ukraine to provide faceto-face palliative care teaching and training for local teams in Kyiv and Lviv.

Thanks to the immense generosity of many individual members of the public and companies who have made donations to Hospice Ukraine, in our first year of operations we have raised over £66,000. These funds are currently supporting two palliative care teams based in Sambir Hospice (Lviv) and the Dobrubut Foundation (Kyiv), helping to transform the quality of life of patients with terminal illnesses in both locations.

It has been a joy and a privilege to help such vulnerable patients in a country facing such severe challenges – and we are hugely grateful to everyone who has so kindly supported our endeavours. Thank you all.

Trustee’s Report for 2023-2024

Introduction

The trustees are pleased to present their annual report together with the financial statements of Hospice Ukraine (the charity) for the year ending 31 January 2024.

The legal and administrative information set out on page 3 forms part of this report.

The Trustees confirm that the annual report and financial statements of the charity comply with the current statutory requirements, the requirements of the charity's governing document and the provisions of the Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP) FRS 102 1A "Accounting and Reporting by Charities"

Structure, governance and management

The constitution provides for a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 12 trustees. There shall be a quorum if at least 3 are in attendance. The chair of trustees is responsible for the induction of new trustees, which includes awareness of a trustee's responsibilities.

The charity is administered by the trustees. The trustees meet regularly during the year and receive reports on the state and developments of the affairs of the charity.

The trustees examine the major risks that the charity may face each financial year. They have developed systems to monitor and control these risks to mitigate the impact they may have on the charity.

Objectives and activities of the charity

The objectives of the charity are to promote the public benefit and advancement of health among people in Ukraine who are terminally ill with cancer or other incurable illnesses or conditions requiring palliative care through:

The paragraphs below set out our activities, achievements and performance during the year January 2023 – January 2024, which are directly related to the objectives and purposes for which the charity exists. The trustees confirm that they have complied with the duty in s17(5) of the Charities Act 2011 to have due regard to the Charity Commissions’ guidance on public benefit, including Public Benefit: reporting' [PB3].

Activities, achievements and performance of the charity

The initial months of our first operational year from registration in January 2023 were spent both fundraising and navigating the complicated logistics and due diligence of opening bank accounts capable of making large donations to a country at war. Key activities were:

1. Inaugural fundraising Gala (June 2023)

On 6 June we held our inaugural fundraising event at the Royal Society of Medicine in London. The RSM kindly donated use of their premises and an anonymous benefactor covered the costs of the event so that all money raised could go directly to Hospice Ukraine. We just over £60,000 for Hospice Ukraine.

The evening was superbly hosted by two of the BBC’s most renowned former journalists, Emily Maitlis and Jon Sopel. It started with our co-founder Rachel Clarke talking about why palliative care matters so much in the UK, around the world, but particularly in Ukraine as they suffer the unimaginable during the current conflict. Eminent speakers included the Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt, David Nott from the David Nott Foundation, and the charity’s other co-founders Henry Marsh and Andrii Myzak, who was granted special permission by the Ukrainian government to travel to the UK for the event. The Ukrainian a cappella folk music all-women group ‘Vadim’ sang on stage. Dinner was followed by a live auction with prizes generously donated by artist Grayson Perry, former Prime Minister Theresa May, author Philip Pullman and musician Sting among others.

  1. Appointment of Cesca Eaton as Director of Operations (July 2023)

The Board was delighted to appoint Cesca Eaton as freelance Director of Operations in July 2023. Cesca has extensive experience in the small charity sector and television production.

  1. Trustees’ visit to Ukraine (October 2023)

Part of the charity’s due diligence involves the trustees aiming to visit Ukraine at least once a year to ensure all funds raised are meeting the charity’s objectives with our partner hospices.

This visit compromised two trustees, Rachel Clarke and Henry Marsh, travelling to Ukrainee to meet fellow co-founder Andrii Myzak in order to visit two hospice and palliative care teams identified as potential recipients of grants from the charity. They met staff at Sambir Hopsice (in Lviv) and the charitable Dobrubut Foundation (in Kyiv), observed the teams in action caring for patients, listen to their needs, and discussed how best the charity could help them to care for their terminally ill patients.

As a practising palliative care doctor, Rachel provided a half-day in-person training session to doctors, nurses and psychologists in Kyiv, with some attendees travelling from all over Ukraine to attend this session – including one doctor who travelled overnight from Odessa, 500 kms away.

Henry and Rachel were also able to raise awareness of the charity by being interviewed on Ukraine’s biggest morning television station, with an audience of over one million viewers.

  1. Identification of our first hospice partners in Ukraine

Following their visit to Ukraine in October 2023, the trustees were satisfied that Hospice Ukraine could work constructively with both Sambir Hospice and the charitable Dobrubut Foundation in order to satisfy our objectives of supporting patients with life-limiting illnesses needing palliative care in Ukraine.

The financial due diligence required prior to transferring large sums to Ukraine meant it was not possible for us to make our first donation (of £20,000 to the Dobrubut Foundation) until shortly after our first year of operation ended on 31 January 2024. This sum is, however, paying for a palliative care consultant and nurse to see patients in their own homes on the outskirts of Kyiv, providing a much-needed community service to a particularly vulnerable patient cohort.
