Foreword by the CEO

Our second year of running has seen us grow to become an integral part of older folks lives in Brighton, East Susseex, West Sussex and beyond. We have expanded to run our Out On The Town project, taking our cabaret events out into the community to reach those who can't make our main events as well as starting our La Di Dance project, running fun, friendly and accesible dance classes for people over 60. I am so passionate about this project and reducing social isolation in the older generation, hearing the stories of our guests and what our events mean to them makes all of the hard work worthwhile. The dedication of the volunteers never ceases to amaze me, their commitment and passion for The La Di Da Society is second to none. They are one of the most brilliant groups of people that I have had the pleasure of working with. I am excited to share all of the exciting achievements that The La Di Da Society has made over the last 12 months and to show the growth that we have acheived. Becca Lundberg - Founder & CEO

Statement from The Chair

This is the second annual report for the LaDiDa Society. I am happy to report that the initiative continues to be a great success and attracts a diverse range of attendees fromacross the Southeast and beyond. Our regular group of attendees continue to provide us with honest, critical and supportive feedback. In April 2024 it became necessary to change venue, and we were lucky enough to move to one which is accessible for several transport options and fully accessible for those with mobility and other challenges. Although the overall capacity is slightly smaller, and after some teething problems, we are now fully settled into the venue. Providing such a service would not be possible without the hard work, support and dedication of the volunteers, the small group of salaried staff, trustees and the CEO. The commitment of the volunteers to the smooth running and continued success of the LaDiDa Society is especially acknowledged and appreciated. It is clear, from feedback that participation in the LaDiDa Society contributes to the physical and emotional health, not only of attendees, but volunteers as well.

Statement from The Chair

The staff working in the kitchen, Daisy Jo, Sian and Vanessa, require a special thank you. They produce hundreds of sandwiches at each event and are able to provide for special dietary needs when requested. Supported by volunteers they ensure the smooth running of the kitchen from its opening to its closure. Charlie our technician and DJ ensures that the technical needs of performers are met and that there is a suitable selection of music at each event to get people up dancing.

Becca, our CEO, deserves a special mention. Her continued passion and drive to ensure the success of LaDiDa is clearly obvious. Her skills in engaging with different groups have ensured that we continue to attract a diverse mix of groups attending each event. Her success in fundraising has allowed LaDiDa to continue and she is always reflecting on the potential development of new initiatives. One such development is LaDi Dance which has proved to be a great success with those attending. For the year ahead we aim to continue to attract new attendees and volunteers. Our mainaim remains that the LaDiDa Society will continue to have a positive impact on the physical and mental health of those attending and involved in its delivery. About The La Di Da Society

The La Di Da Society is a registered charity that runs daytime cabaret and dance events for people of 60 years old at The King Alfred Ballroom in Hove. At each event, with up to 190 guests, we create a friendly, sociable and lively atmosphere where people can easily make friends and let their hair down! For £10, guests receive an afternoon tea served on vintage crockery, a glass of bubbly and a raffle ticket, as well as getting entertained by some top quality cabaret performers and our resident DJ. We also incorporate short, 5 minute interactive dances at each event that get everyone moving whether it's done sitting down or standing up. We get many people who come on their own, the events are designed in a way to encourage interaction with others and meet new people. We also get lots of groups coming, these can be friendship groups as well as other local community organisations who bring the people they work with along. Our venue is fully accessible.

New Venue

In 2023 we decided that we needed to move to a new venue that could better meet our needs. After much research, we found Ralli Hall in Hove which has a spectacular stage, is fully accessible, has great transport links and had the capacity that we needed. The move meant that we had change of day that we run and also meant that we had to reduce our capacity slightly from 240 to 190. This has helped us with the workload on events days, to ensure that we can provide the best service to those who attend.

La Di Dance

The La Di Dance Pilot run has continued into 2024, running 4 blocks of 5 weeks with each block focussing on a difference dance genre including hula hooping, burlesque, line dance and ballroom dance. We ended the pilot run with a showcase event, where all La Di Dance participants and dance teachers were invited to come together to show off what they had learnt in the classes. Some participants went on to perform dances on stage at our main cabaret

events.

The classes are low cost at £2 per person including tea, coffee & biscuits.

The La Di Da Film Society

After running a film event last year, we decided to run some further film events which proved to be very popular as an alternative to our main cabaret events. Films shown included Grease, Mamma Mia and Saturday Night Fever. Guests were treated to finger food, cakes, popcorn & hot drinks plus there was a cash bubbly bar to help raise funds. A drag host compared each event, encouraging guests to sing along to the songs in each film. Our in house DJ provided music for a disco at the end of the film.

ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE

During the year, the charity’s key achievements were:

FINANCIAL REVIEW

The charity’s main sources of income are ticket sales, grants from trusts and foundations and donations.

Total income for the year was £46,093 and total expenditure was £58,925 resulting in a deficit of £12,832 which was covered by reserves brought forward.

The policy of the charity is to maintain reserves of around £3,000, which represents the estimated cost of closing the charity should this become necessary. At the year end, £3,294 of reserves were held.

The main risk faced by the charity is insufficient funding to cover any deficit remaining after ticket income from events. The trustees consider this risk to be low, as the charity has a robust fundraising strategy in place and maintains reserves sufficient to cover approximately three months of activity if required.

STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT

The La Di Da Society is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation governed by its Constitution dated 13 January 2023.

The election or appointment of trustees is set out in the Constitution. The minimum number is three and the maximum number is 12. Trustees are appointed by the members at the Annual General Meeting and are re-appointed by rotation.

New trustees are given a role description, welcome pack, and a copy of The La Di Da Society Constitution and the charity’s policies to read through. They are invited to an induction meeting, given the dates of upcoming trustee meetings, and directed to the Charity Commission website to read about the roles and responsibilities of being a charity trustee.

Statement of trustees' responsibilities in relation to the financial statements

The charity trustees are responsible for preparing a trustees' annual report and financial statements in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards (United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice).

The trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records that disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and to enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities Act 2011, the applicable Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations, and the provisions of the Trust deed. The Trustees are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.

Notes to the Accounts

Expenditure

Recognition of Expenditure is recognised on an accruals basis. Expenditure includes any VAT which expenditure cannot be fully recovered, and is reported as part of the expenditure to which it relates.

Taxation

The charity is exempt from tax on its charitable activities.

Trade and other debtors

Trade and other debtors are recognised at the settlement amount due after any trade discount offered. Prepayments are valued at the amount prepaid net of any trade discounts due.

Cash and cash equivalents

Cash and cash equivalents comprise cash at bank and on hand, demand deposits with banks and other short-term highly liquid investments with original maturities of three months or less and bank overdrafts. In the statement of financial position, bank overdrafts are shown within borrowings or current liabilities. In the Statement of Cash Flows, cash and cash equivalents are shown net of bank overdrafts that are repayable on demand and form an integral part of the company's cash management.

Trade and other creditors

Once the contributions have been paid the charity has no further payments obligations. The contributions are recognised as expenses when they fall due. Amounts not paid are shown in accruals in the balance sheet. The assets of the plan are held separately from the charity in independently administered funds.

Related party transactions

There have been no related party transactions during the period.
